  • When you take over as Walsall you have a whopping £50,000 at your disposal. You can request funds to your hearts content etc and spend any money you generate yourself. You will be awarded points for your transfer ability though. 20 points for not spending a penny (net) all season (or for making a net-gain). For every £10,000 you spend (net) you will lose a 2 points from that 20.
  • 24 Points awarded for finishing in media predicted spot of 13th. 2 points awarded for every position above that, 10 point bonus for promotion through any means, 10 point bonus again for winning the league.
  • -2 points off of that 20 for every position below 12th you finish (-10 points for relegation finish)
  • 10 Points for a player netting 15 times in the season
  • 20 Points (on top of the 10) for any player netting 25 times in the season
  • 30 Points (on top of previous 30) for any player netting 35+ times in the season
  • 10 Points for any player with 12 assists
  • 10 Extra points for any player with 20+ assists
  • 20 Points if your team scores more than 100 goals in the season
  • 20 Points for conceding 30 goals or less in the season
BRUCEY CUP BONUSES BELOW
  • 2 points for each League 2 side you beat in cup competitions
  • 3 points for each League 1 side you beat in cup competitions
  • 5 points for each Championship side you beat in cup competitions
  • 10 points for each Premier League side you beat in cup competitions
  • 20 points for winning League Cup
  • 40 points for winning FA Cup

Really enjoyed the season with Walsall, am looking forward to future challenges Buzz! Thanks for organising this.

After a poor start in the league we went on a good spell and were 6th at the turn of the year. But with cup congestion and a poor spell we slipped down to 12th by March. Fortunately we ended the season perfectly, winning the last 6 games to finish 8th with 71 points (W22 D5 L19 GD11) - 4 points off the play-offs.

The JPT was the highlight of the season, which we won at Wembley against Gillingham. We had a nice run to the final, playing 6 L2 sides and only one L1, but took advantage.

We did excellently in the FA Cup too, beating Kidderminster and Stevenage before drawing Man Utd in Round 3. When Chris Smalling was sent off in the 75th minute with the score at 0-0 I thought we might have a chance of an incredible result, but Darren Fletcher scored an 89th minute goal to beat us 1-0. A draw wouldn't have meant any more points and the money isn't an issue for a one season save, so the blow was lessened.

By my maths, that means 103 points:

20 Points - Not Spending a penny
34 Points - Finishing 8th
10 Points – John Guidetti 17 goals
10 Points – James O’Shea 18 assists
10 Points – Julian Gray 13 assists
15 Points - JPT wins over L1 Sheffield Wednesday and L2 Rotherham, Shrewsbury, Stockport, Bradford (x2) and Gillingham
2 Points - FA Cup win over L2 Stevenage
2 Points - League Cup win over L2 Bury

I don't have time now but will post my transfers later tonight hopefully.

Nice, 8th placed finish is very impressive. Am 22 games in and sitting 10th myself, I was 3rd 6 games ago, but 0 wins in the last 6 kinda damages your league place :(

Raised £475k from Taundry (150k), Richards (80k), Geddes (100k), Paterson (100k), McDonald (20k) and Westlake (20k).

Spent £475k (rounded figures are the same but I actually made a profit), on:

Matt Watson (DMC, 2.5k)
David Perkins (Colchester, MC, 75k)
Peter Murphy (Carlisle, DL, 60k)
James Brown (Hartlepool, FC, 325k)
Chris James (MC)
Pele (DC)
James O'Shea (MR LOAN)
John Guidetti (FC LOAN)
Jordan Spence (DR LOAN)
Jordan Mutch (MC LOAN)

James Brown was a huge waste of money at £325k, but I had the money to spend and he was the best avaliable. 11 goals in 45 odd games is pretty shite but even with his signing we got the maximum points from net spending. John Guidetti on loan from Man City was free and he scored far more.

With everyone avaliable, my first XI was:

Jimmy Walker

Jordan Spence - Manny Smith - Pele - Peter Murphy

James O'Shea - Jordan Mutch - David Perkins - Julian Gray

Alex Nicholls - John Guidetti

Andy Butler, Matt Watson and James Brown also played a lot.

Can't believe you got 100k for paterson, I got 22k for him!

On another note, I just this second beat Chelsea 2-0 in the FA Cup 4th round!! (having beaten championship Swansea 1-0 in the 3rd).

Finished my game today, what a season! Had it's ups (beating premier league winners Chelsea in the FA Cup 4th round) and downs (8 game run without a win ruining hopes of automatic promotion way back in December) but ultimately a very successful campaign.

I finished in the play off spots in 6th place, clinching the place with ground out 1-0 win over 7th placed Colchester, who started the tie one point adrift of me. Alas, promotion was not on the agenda as having finished 6th I faced a very strong Huddersfield side in the play off semi final. A disappointing 2-3 home defeat in the first leg was followed by a 2-1 defeat in the away tie to give Huddersfield a deserved 5-3 aggregate win.
I think my squad just ran out of gas at the last and couldn't cope. Still, I was pleased with the season considering how crap I thought the squad was at the start :)

As far as points go however I haven't actually done too well, my squad bonded well but unfortunately I was unable to get one player scoring regularly and my goals were shared out between 20 players, with no one scoring even 11 on their own, let alone 15. I managed a net spend of £0, spending £40k and bringing in £40k. Transfer dealings were:

In:
Tommie van der Leegte (free - MC/DMC)
Andres Ramos (£10k - ST)
James O Shea (loan - MR/AMR)
Robbie Neilson (loan - £30k - DR)
Kevin Bobson (free - AML/ML)
Ryan McGivern (loan - DC/DL)
Conor Henderson (loan, 3 months October-Jan - MC)
Segio (loan, 8 months, October-end of season - MC)
Koke (loan, 8 months, October-end of season - MC/DMC)
Rhys Murphy (loan, 3 months - October-Jan - ST)
Sam Vokes (loan, 5 months - Jan-end of season - ST)
Kevin Das Neves (free, signed in Jan - MC)

Lots of midfielders as the one you start with is awful. Tried Rhys Murphy out with a view to making season long, but he was shit, 1 goal in 9 games. Sam Vokes did better with 8 goals in 21.

Out:
Hickman (free)
Paterson (£24k)
McDonal (£16k)
Brain, Boweman, Lewscott (free)

Finishing position: 6th - 38 points
Transfer net spend £0 - 20 points
Goal scorer: 0 points
Assister: 0 points (2 x 11 assists and 1 x 10... gutted)
Goals scored/against: 0 points (scored 67, conceded 43 - +24 GD)

Cup Bonuses:
League Cup: 2 points (beat Bradford Round 1, lost to Fulham round 2)
FA Cup: 17 points (beat Cheltenham L2, Colwyn Bay non league, Swansea CH and Chelsea PL)
JPT: 0 points (played my U18, lost 6-0 to Carlise 1st rnd :D)

Total Points: 77
---------

Good fun, hoping a few more finish over the weekend then I can put the table up and post Challenge #2 :)

My season was baffling. Taking over at Walsall I spent zero pounds, generating 1k in transfer revenue. I brought in:

Free trannies:

Izzy Irekpen
Pelé
Febian Brandy
Trent McClenahan
Youssef Mokhtari
Juan Manuel Pena
David Cowan
Derek Geary
Lee Hendrie
Leon Kantelberg

Loans:

Rhys Murphy
John Guidetti
Jose Baxter
Alex Nimely

A load of rubbish players left the club - 20 points for zero net spend.

Ridiculously I finished 5th with 87 points. That has got to be some kind of record for a 5th placed team. Unfortunately I drew Southampton in the playoffs, and my two top scorers disappeared off on u19s international duty, thus missing the first leg. Realism. Predictably Southampton tore me to shreds, and my season was over. Still - 40 points for position, so 60 in total.

The cups - decent runs in each competition
L2 opposition beaten: Bury, Chesterfield, Macclesfield, Oxford, Wycombe
Championship opposition beaten: QPR, Hull.
I make that 20 points, so 80 in total.

Goals and assists. Firstly, immensely frustrating. I have 2 players sat on 11 assists, and 3 who missed out on goal targets by a couple. Still, no prizes for a pair, not in this game.
John Guidetti - 28 goals - 12 assists
Jon Macken - 22 goals - 12 assists
Alex Nimely - 21 goals - 11 assists
Febian Brandy - 12 goals - 11 assists

Nimely was probably a bit confused that at 3-0 down to Southampton in the playoff semi my only tactical instruction was for him to take all corners, try through balls a lot, and never shoot. Anyway - I make that 70 points for those, so not half bad.

That gives me a nice round figure of 150 overall. Lovely jubbly. Screenies available on request.

Team based around pinging the ball in to his feet so pace didn't matter really and his other stats are decent championship (confusingly because irl he is dire). Helps he had 2 poachers pinging through balls and crosses at him all season and he took the penalties. He missed the last 3 games of the season as well - I fancy him to have popped in 3 more goals had he been available. Shame.

Mine is petering out into a boring mid-table finish. Got 8 games left and I'm 10 points off the play-offs. Might throw the kitchen sink at it for the last few games and see what happens. Just got a creditable 1-1 draw against Southampton though.

Weird season this one, enjoyed it though. Started off very slowly then got going. For every 4-1 win away at Southampton was a dreadful performance against teams like Yeovil. Weirdest of all though was the 7-0 home win against Sheff Wednesday on the final day of the season.

My strongest line up was probably:

Jimmy Walker

Eric Lichaj
Manny Smith
Andy Butler
Ryan McGivern

Alex Nicholls/Myrie-Williams
Paul Marshall
Oliver Norwell
Julian Gray

Tresor Kandol
Jamil Adam

Finished 8th in the end with 73 points, 8 points off the play offs.

Table:

Posted Image

Transfers:

Posted Image

Points:

Nothing spent on transfers - 20pts
8th place finish - 34pts
Tresor Kandol 22 goals - 10pts
Oliver Norwell 12 assists - 10pts

74pts

Cups:

League Cup - Beat Bury 2-0, lost 2-0 away at Everton = 2pts
JPT - Beat Lincoln 4-2, lost to Port Vale 2-1 = 2pts.
FA Cup - Beat Huddersfield 2-1, beat Peterborough 3-0, beat Middlesbrough 2-1, lost to Man Utd 6-0 = 11pts

TOTAL POINTS: 85

Good effort, will update table shortly, think that puts you third unless Smat had an immense end to the season.

7-0 vs Wednesday... ruddy impressive, wouldn't happen during Gob Bluth's reign though!

Phil... it seems you got rid of a bunch of players by terminating their contracts, surely this means you had to pay termination fee's in order to get them off the wage bill to sign free transfers. Seems a bit of a cheeky rules loophole you have exploited - also entirely pointless, as you would have made money selling them :D.

I do like how you conceded only 2 less goals than 19th placed Bournemouth.

Finished 15th, rounding it off with a magnificent 4-0 defeat at home to Charlton. In FM challenge terms, I got 55 points. That's enough for joint-bottom, thanks in large part to Darren Byfield's 15 goals. An inauspicious start.

Couldn't have done this at the time because my laptops been broken for a few months. But I told you Andy Butler was a goal machine. Byfield chips in with a few as well, but I can't believe Macken got 22. He's normally a 6 or 7 goals and a couple of assists man on my games. I've had many, many attempts at Walsall and my highest finish has been 12th so the play offs is quite some feat. Surprised nobody signed Mark Randall or Emmanuel Frimpong, Arsenal u21's and both available on season long loans.

Currently top after 8 wins on the trott. Wont last though. I got pre-occupied chasing talent who would never get a work permit, and forgot to organise any additional friendies. As a result, my players have spent the season knackered and its a matter of time until my enforced rotation policy comes undone.

Focused my summer dealings on free transfers. Made a c £400k profit in terms of transfer fee's, then ploughed it into the wages. Brandy as a lone striker (in a quasi-attacking 4-2-3-1 formation) is banging them in. Long may it continue.

I'll post a fuller report once I get around to finishing the season.

Slow methodical process. Manage to crack on with a few games over the weekend.
Boxing day, unbeaten in the league and 10 clear. Really being hauled through this season by 4 players, two of which have become perma-crocks now the weather had turned.

Short of a goalscorer stepping up, i'm going to struggle to make the play-offs (which although I'll be proud of, would be disapointing from this point).

The biggest mistake I've made (other then throwing my weight behind a small, but good quality squad) was not changing the Keeper pre-season. I gambled that he would suffice, and focused on getting two brutes of a centre halves in. Turns out, attempting a strategy of being solid at the back is heavily flawed when the 'keeper goes wondering. However, publically slating him recently seems to have helped him find a small amount of Form.

Round 3 of the FA cup sees me travel to Pompey. I bet a non-league minnows on penalties in round 1, and Northampton via replay in the second. Not been a strong showing so far.

Right. I had written out a lengthy report on progress. However my Browser crashed, and I don't have the patience to do it again.
Points Earnt (by my reckoning) is 235

20 for £0 NET spend
24 for meeting league expectation
24 for winning the league
30 for Brandy's Goals
60 for guidetti's goals
50 for 5 Players enjoying 12+ assists
20 for 100+ goals scored
4 for beating Shewsbury and Northampton
3 for beating Hartlepool
