Like... but will hate it when it becomes a half-empty football stadium.

Just a piity that the FA rebuilt wembley Stadium because if the money used on Wembley was used on this stadium instead the London Olympic Stadium could have one or more of
90,000 instead of 80,000 all-seated capacity,
Retractbale roof over the whole stadium.
Retractable stands.

Then again if football gets involved with the stadium they will get rid of the athletics track which would be wrong as the stadium needs to be multi-purpose for all sports not just football but athletics as well.

However without football and it's money who is going to end up paying for the maintanence/running costs of the stadium, taxpayers???

Because it was part of London's original bid for the Olympics.

If it's not multi-purpose I think it'll be very hard for the UK to ever host a major sporting event again (outside of minor sports like cricket or rugby)

Going to be another version of the Millenium Dome. Great to look at, useful for the purpose it was built for, but then once its purpose has been forfilled, it'll become useless.

God knows why West Ham/Spurs want it, would be awful as a football stadium. Serie A teams have proved that running track football stadiums are awful.

Oh god it just shows how football can be so big headed some times.

It's the olympic stadium so ofcourse they should have the resources to host future tournaments in lots of sports not just Soccerball.

The World Athletics Championships are being held there in 2017, so it'll have to stay.

I personally think its an awful cheap looking stadium, like something built by parts from B&Q. Beijing had the wonderful Crow's Nest stadium and we build that, its embarrassing...

I have voted hate, but hate is a bit harsh!

I just think very little thought has gone into building it.

I think I said in the other thread, you go to Wembley Stadium and you see the stadium on the train on the way up there or miles down the road with the big arch and the glass outside and theres a goosebump feeling.

You see the Olympic Stadium and it does nothing. It looks like a scaffold bowl, which I think they are going to add some fabric down the sides of it with bright lights to make it looks a bit prettier. The phrase "you can't polish a turd" springs to mind.

Don't get me wrong, inside it's lovely. Cushioned seats, crowd is very close to the action making it built for an atmosphere.

Fair enough but at least that stadium looked like it was done with a bit of imagination. This thing we have is a travesty, like something a lower league English football club would have.

I think it looks fine too; tho, semiotically, the "look at us, all (psuedo-)legacy and shit" structure rubs up rather awkwardly against the "DON'T MENTION BHOPAL!" wrapping.

Seriously tho, the fixation on the track and field stadium is rather silly - there are many more parts to the park, and both the individual components and the overall design submit to rather more meaningful cooing or bitching than that, and in multiple too.

If we're all going to spew out some invective, it should surely be aimed at the stupid, compromised (and frankly vile) Orbit (with the Jupiter sized caveat that I have not seen it in the Mittal sponsored steel flesh).

Went past it again yesterday. Disappointed they've put a huge McDonalds in the middle of the park. Shouldn't be letting vile companies like that benefiting from the Olympics.

The biggest McDonalds in the world isn't it?

When we walked through on the test event we were looking for places to eat and this McDonalds is all you can see between the Olympic Stadium and the other venues in the Olympic Park. It is fucking huge.

Compared to some of the companies involved in the Olympics, McDonalds are positively saint-like.

McDonalds can f*ck off, why does it seem to be involved in every major sporting event, it got the advert on ITV over the Euros as one of their most prominent partners and now it is involved in the Olympics, so much that it is allowed a huge restaurant just a stones throw away from the stadium?

Shouldn't we be encouraging the kind of activity that sees these athletes reach the top of their game, instead of consistently tempting people with processed fast food? Obviously they have the money as one of the world's biggest business', but we could have the world's biggest salad bar instead, to actually offer people something healthy to eat within the proximity of a major sporting event.

Hardly the biggest worry really at the games is it?

No it's not! I was working in the olympic park for 6 days over the last couple of weeks. Other than site orientation on the first day I walked on and off of site, mainly for spliff breaks, at least 30 times without having to show any ID whatsoever.

There were 11 of us on the job, split between 5 vehicles, everyday we pulled up to the vehicle check where all 6 passengers got out and walked the rest of the way, leaving 5 drivers of course, without so much as a second look. The vehicle checks were so-so. Our 18 tonne truck for instance was thoroughly searched on the outside, underneath etc but not once did they look in the back or in the cab.

What makes it even funnier is that I work for the brother of Oliver Savant (google him) who in turn used to work for the same company.

Yup, that is very nice, and the Aquatics Centre will be spectacular too, once the extra large heavy-flow-grip-your-gusset wings have been lopped off post games.

Posted Image

The 2001 Monolith electrical substation by Nord is really good too. Forgotten now cos it was finished a while ago, but much bummed at the time.

Posted Image

If people want to moan, it'd be much better directed at something like the Lea River Park being put on hold, something that will actually fulfil a bit of the "legacy" guff, instead of just making a cool/not cool picture on TV for people halfway around the world to tut over.

Dislike rather than hate.. It just looks a bit basic seeing as it's supposed to be the focal point of the games, the other arena's look immense though.
