Torres scored 45 goals in just over 17 games for Chelsea, marking his time as a failure due to the high expectations. 

Angel Di Maria 

Angel Di Maria joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2014 for a British transfer record of just under £60 million. Di Maria was a technical genius who could operate anywhere across the front line, though his preference was on the right. Di Maria started well during his time at Manchester United, scoring an early goal and providing several assists.

The Argentine creator was unsettled during his time at Manchester United, after his home was the victim of an attempted burglary that made headlines and resulted in injuries. In October of his only year in Manchester, things began to shift, with Di Maria providing two assists, as well as scoring two goals himself. He was named the Manchester United Player of the Month following these results. 

After a few months had passed, Di Maria struggled once again, particularly in a memorable FA Cup fixture where he saw red. Manchester United faced Arsenal in the FA Cup sixth round, where he was sent off for simulation and grabbed the referee’s shirt. The Daily Telegraph named Di Maria as the worst signing of the season when the season concluded. After just one year, Angel Di Maria was sold to Paris Saint-Germain, where he would regain his previous form.

Romelu Lukaku 

Romelu Lukaku has had numerous stints in the Premier League, playing for a range of different clubs. Lukaku was a large physical presence, with a proven goalscoring record for clubs such as Everton and West Brom. Lukaku has experienced troubled times at both Chelsea and Manchester United, where he has been largely criticized. In his first spell at Chelsea, Lukaku had some early success.

Chelsea signed the Belgian striker for £10 million, and in his first season, he was mainly a bench player, though he made his first start for the club during this period. Lukaku was loaned out to West Bromwich Albion for a season-long loan, which was intended to aid the striker’s breakthrough into Premier League football. His time at West Brom ended with him scoring over 15 goals in 35 games. 

Everton was the next loan destination for Romelu, who the club then purchased on a permanent deal after another impressive display. Everton was the location where Lukaku performed best, which had attracted interest from Manchester United. After 4 years at the club, Manchester United agreed a deal worth £75 million for the striker to replace club icon Wayne Rooney.

His time at Manchester United was marked by mixed results and a lack of true consistency, a trait he had previously demonstrated. His first season was considered a success; however, the second would be where the inconsistency began. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Lukaku was criticized by fans for his poor first touch, poor fitness, and inconsistency in front of goal. He left for Inter Milan in 2019, where he once again showed his class.

After 2 successful years at Inter Milan, Chelsea would try again with the Belgian powerhouse. The Blues signed Lukaku for a fee worth £97.5 million, which was a club record signing at the time. He was brought back to elevate the already great UEFA Champions League-winning team.

He scored 8 goals in 26 appearances in his first year back at the club, which was regarded as a disappointing year. After just one year, Lukaku had lost his spot and was on the chopping block. The striker was loaned back to Inter Milan, followed by two further loans, before leaving the club permanently in 2024.
