Newcastle United will end the 2024-25 Premier League campaign with a fixture at St. James’ Park against Everton on May 25th.

As of the time of writing, Newcastle United have 66 points from 36 matches and are ranked third on the log. Everton are placed 13th on the log with 42 points from the same number of matches.

Newcastle United had a mixed start to the first half of the season. They struggled to build on an impressive 2022/23 season as they failed to qualify for Europe in the 2023/24 season after finishing seventh on the table, which was just a place outside qualification.

Their major incoming in the summer was left-back Lewis Hall, who joined from Chelsea. They failed to sign their major transfer target of the summer after they were unable to agree on a fee with Crystal Palace for defender Marc Guehi. They, however, tied winger Anthony Gordon to a new deal and prevented him from joining Liverpool, and were also able to keep Sweden international Alexander Isak amidst interest from Premier League rivals.

Their first match of the season ended in a lone-goal victory over newly-promoted Southampton as a Joelinton first-half strike was enough to secure all three points. They continued their brilliant start to the season as they won three of their opening four matches before falling to defeat for the first time this season to Fulham. Their most recent outing was a comfortable 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Newcastle knocked out Manchester City and Arsenal (semis) to win the 2025 League Cup against Liverpool at Wembley. Dan Burn and Isak gave the Magpies a two-goal lead before Federico Chiesa came off the bench to score a consolation goal for the Reds. Currently, Newcastle have won six of their past eight Premier League games, including an important win over Chelsea in the race for the Champions League place finish in their most recent game.

On the other hand, Everton have not been themselves in the last couple of years. It has been one relegation battle after another, and they were locked in it again in the early stages of this term. After so much investment in the squad in recent years, the team was carefully strengthened in the summer before the season kicked off. Iliman Ndiaye arrived from Marseille, Jesper Lindstrom arrived from Napoli, while Jack O’Brien also came in from Lyon as some of the high-profile signings for the club.

Despite those summer additions, it was a difficult start to the campaign for Sean Dyche’s men as they lost their first four Premier League games of the season to Brighton, Tottenham, Bournemouth, and Aston Villa. In the EFL Cup, they were also knocked out on penalties by Southampton. A first league win of the season came in a comeback 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park. Dwight McNeil scored a brace after Marc Guehi opened the scoring for the Eagles.

Everton went ahead to win just one of their next three matches before losing to Southampton in the reverse fixture. The Toffees lost just once in their next seven league games (W1 D5) to improve on their position on the log. Everton ended the year with another home loss to Nottingham Forest, and after another defeat at Bournemouth in the new year, Sean Dyche was sacked to put an end to his two-year tenure. He left the club in 16th spot, having scored only 15 goals in 19 games. Just days later, the club confirmed the return of David Moyes as head coach.

“As everybody knows, this is a different beast to many other clubs. Everton is completely different,” said Moyes while speaking to journalists.

“A couple of weeks ago, I thought there was no chance Everton would be in a relegation fight, and I think they will be strong enough to stay away from it.

“We need everyone behind us, the players playing better and scoring more goals if we’re going to make that happen.”

Since Moyes’ arrival, Everton have managed to win seven more games and pick up other valuable points to crack into the top 15 at the time of writing. They were billed to stay up due to the terrible form of Southampton, Ipswich, and Leicester City, and it has been confirmed now. However, the Toffees have just two wins in their past five Premier League games, and did produce a fine performance to beat Fulham in London in their last away game.

In the past 55 meetings between the two teams, Newcastle have won 20 games, Everton have won 22 games, and the remaining 13 games have been stalemates.
