Me and my missus are thinking about it. £15 a week to have someone do the washing up, clothes washing, clean the house, dust around, polish the furniture, hoover - especially if they do a better job than me! - sounds like a good deal. Whilst we do technically have the time to do it ourselves, we'd much rather be doing something else with our free time, especially when we only get 1 weekend off in 2 together. Just wondered if anyone else here does it?

Speak to Posh Hammer. If you decide to get one he can advise you how to treat them.

We have a cleaner for a couple of hours a week. Just general dusting, hoovering, cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen etc. I'm not sure what we pay but it's money well spent if you get a decent one.

We had one cleaner who was useless and it was a little awkward letting her go but the other two we've had have been excellent.

Having worked in a "hired help" capacity, I can confirm that your cleaner will hate you and slag you mercilessly to everyone she / he knows.

Alternatively, you and your missus will become acutely aware of what a state your house / underpants are in and end up having a little tidy round before he / she comes.

Don't understand why anyone would hire one myself, especially if you live in a normal house (ie, 3-4 bedrooms). Doesn't take much to keep a house tidy, and I'm talking as someone with two kids under the age of 6. Would sooner put in a little effort and do it myself rather than have someone rooting through my stuff whilst they're tidying. If you take a little effort tidy up as you go along, there won't be much need for a cleaner in the first place.

Never thought I would. And never have. But am sure now I would in future, fo sho.

If you value your time (and time is the most precious thing we have - can always make money, cannot get time back) and have the spare cash then why not.

Biggest thing for me though is giving someone else a bit more work. Folk complain there's not enough jobs. If you can employ someone, even if just to wash your grundies, do it. Get cash in their pocket. That's their line of work and they'll be better off because you gave them more of it.

So why not.

imo

Would like to but I'd imagine it being quite dodgy or pretty awkward.

ie, do you give them a key and they let themselves in willy nilly when you're not there. Or are you there in your boxers eating coco pops on the sofa like a king as they slave about the place?

I wouldn't trust giving them a key and I'd feel like a right tit just watching some poor soul clean my shit.

At the moment I live in a pretty big house with 7 (s-e-v-e-n) bedrooms, eight housemates, and a lot of communal areas. (Eight different nationalities too, if you count Catalan and Spanish as different).

We all wash and clean up after ourselves, but we have a cleaner who comes for about three hours every Tuesday to clean the kitchen, bathrooms, terrace, study and lounge and I honestly don't think we'd have the same harmony if she didn't. Our rota consists of one person being responsible each week for putting away dishes that are in the drying racks, and emptying the bins.

The lady has been doing it for about three years now, and is a 60 year old from Ecuador who works part-time and her wages pay for her and her husband to return home once a year to see their family.

The contrast to the last communal place I lived in in Bristol is incredible. I used to go running in the Lake District, and one time I cleaned the whole kitchen on Friday morning before I went and was so appalled when I returned on Sunday that I hung this photo on everyone's bedroom door and threatened to find their mothers' addresses and write to them. After that house I'd never live communally without a cleaner again (although I don't think a cleaner's job should be to do your week old washing up)

edit: not sure I can attach file. probably too filthy.

I wouldn't trust a cleaner tbh, snooping through all your drawers and cupboards. Fuck that

No as my home is my private place. My and my missus share it between us when i'm able. I know one thing i'd never give a key to anyone.

We give ours a key so he cleans whilst we're at work. On the occasions my WFH day coincides with his day I just lock myself away in the study and let him get on with it. It takes a lot of trust to let someone have a key but you soon get over it.

They're a cleaner, not a tidier. The main areas are giving the bathrooms and the kitchen a scrub, not putting things away, which we do.

I'm out of the house for at least 12 hours each working day and the wife is disabled (as well as working almost FT) so between us we find it hard to find the time to clean, so we hire someone. It's not a lot of money and it's nice to come home to a clean house.

I was a little sceptical at first but it's great.

In which case it makes even less sense. Cleaning the bathroom a kitchen takes less than an hour a week if you keep on top of it. I'm not convinced the saving of that amount of time is all that important.

The house I rented last year came with a cleaner, but only every few weeks. Barely noticed though as we kept the place pretty clean anyways.

Can you not do the cleaning yourself and save the extra notes for a well earned beer afterwards?

Me and my missus work long hours, but we still find the time to keep the house in order. Doesn't take that long if you see to it everyday.

Cleaning two bathrooms, a kitchen, a downstairs toilet and hoovering the whole house is at least 2 hours if you do it properly (which I wouldn't which is an another reason to get a cleaner). Plus all the other bits like dusting which he does every now and then. I'd much rather pay £30-£40 than do it myself. I appreciate that others may think differently though.

You could equally say that saving £20 is not that important. Depends on your lifestyle and your priorities.

Worth considering. Depends on your personal circumstances really (frankly, life's too short so if you'd value the extra time and don't see the cash as much of an expense then why not). We had one for a while when I shared a house. Four of us put a fiver in every fortnight and it worked really well in terms of keeping things ticking over. Now that I live in a fairly modest flat, with less disposable income and no one else's mess to worry about I wouldn't contemplate it.

Washing up and clothes washing does seem a little excessive to me though.

I think that's the key for me. I could afford it but, even setting aside my reservation regarding privacy, I resent paying money for something that can be quickly and easily done by anyone. It's for this exact reason I own a pressure washer and save £15 a time washing my own car rather than take it to the local Polish car wash.

And I thought to myself, 'won't be long before old Paggers is in there having a pop at someone...

Speak to Posh Hammer. If you decide to get one he can advise you how to treat them.

offering up his opinion on how people choose to spend their money...

Don't understand why anyone would hire one myself.

and pointing out the bloody obvious...

Cleaning the bathroom a kitchen takes less than an hour a week if you keep on top of it.

If this was a parody account, the perpetrator would deserve some sort of Wummery Oscar.

Well, a few hours ago you condescended to a guy who says he spends a bit of money each week to help himself and his disabled wife out around the house, so I had no doubt you could 'do it' to me too.
