Do Carlisle still run a full academy set-up? Used to take loads of kids from around Furness and West Cumbria. I think our old manager, Darren Edmondson, was academy boss until quite recently.

Yeah we do still run a full academy set up. Some decent players have come out of it in recent years, we sold one to Everton in January for 750k + add ons, he’s already in their first team squad.

Quite a few more have signed first team contracts for next season. It’ll be vital for us if we do indeed go part time.

Looks like Bolton have won the race for Eoin Doyle.

James Jones set to leave us on a free according to Radio Stoke.

Can't for the life of me see him move to a League One club given his injuries, and he does have Scottish heritage. So he'll either be in League Two or the SPL next season.

Wouldn't surprise me if he rocked up at somewhere like Vale, Tranmere or Walsall at all.

Wouldn’t surprise me see him at Vale to be honest. That said, we have quite a few midfielders especially if Manny can stay fit. We need replace Jake Taylor, though. That’s unless we can convince him come back and help us get promoted.

That's 17% of the salary cap spent on 1 player.

Blackpool and Plymouth have both offered deals to our captain Joe Mills.

Been absolute quality for us and despite being a left back was our top scorer last season.

Agree with that, always a bit worrying for me when a defender is top scorer, kind of suggests that our forwards aren't cutting the mustard. I can't see why he wouldn't, and I won't blame him if he does, want to move to a Division One club. However, I would add that no player is irreplaceable and with a likely glut of players looking for a team if clubs go for smaller squads, we probably won't have much difficulty filling his boots if he does leave. You could argue that this has already happened with the signing of Chris Stokes, unless of course he is seen as being more of a central defender...where he did perform well after signing for us.

I’m genuinely so happy we did not match that ridiculous offer.

Bolton can fuck off. Evatt, Devitt, Doyle and Eardley coming in? They're taking the fucking piss here. I hate it when teams almost go under and then come out spending. Bournemouth and Rotherham both did it. Looks like Bolton are going down the same route. I honestly couldn't give a shit if things go tits up for them now. Wigan are another one, that's been on the cards for a while now - absolute joke club.

I did wonder about them paying for Evatt. As far as I know, they are still banned from paying fees for players - does that not extend to managers?

They were scrabbling around for the money to pay off Barrow then commit £600,000 to a 32 year old on a 3 year contract.

I presume their embargo of not being allowed to pay more than £2k pw on a player has ended.

Bolton are still tens of millions in debt after the initial debt of £200 million accrued was reduced from being sold last August I think. It seems some clubs just never learn and it’s a real kick in the teeth for other clubs that operate fairly and within the proper guidelines.

The story I heard is that we’re getting special dispensation from EFL to do it for one season due to the loss of income from match day revenue, rather than getting into financial turmoil and going into admin

Ah that sounds like a nice gesture from the EFL. But what if some other clubs don't like the idea of it, are all the chairman going to get together and appeal that like our independent panel ruling?

"Special dispensation" my arse, just a fucking old boys clubs more like.

Not too sure we were in the same league for spending as the others you mention.
When we were taken over by Tony Stewart in 2008 he put us into Admin for the second time and we were given a 17 point deduction.
Mark Robins did an amazing job to wipe the deduction out and we would have been in the play offs but for the deduction on 75 points but other than ALF we didn't spend much money, Nicky Law came in on a free from Sheffield Utd but most of the team were already here.

If you mean we spent a lot when Steve Evans was appointed, fair enough but that was 4 years later, how long do you want teams to wait before they can spend owt without feeling guilty?

I do agree with you about Bolton taking the piss though and it is upsetting for clubs that play by the rules.

...Charlie Vernam who we have an option for another year looks like he's off somewhere in League, because the EFL advised us to not take the option up?! WHAT THE FUCK, I don't even know where to begin.
Why would the Club listen to the EFL about that kind of thing?! Doesn't sound too plausible to me - an excuse to mask him being released and/or not being able to afford to keep him on his current contract?

Didn't you bring in Tom Pope as well? Also Law and/or Le Fondre had offers from L1 clubs if I remember rightly? Kevin Ellison as well I think came in that season after you served your points deduction.

It's not a matter of time regarding spending either, it's a matter of doing it sustainably. I don't believe you did that out of administration.

Yeah, it could well be that - everyone has taken a 25% pay cut and we couldn't offer the extension to Vernam as well as that. It's been terribly handled however you look at it.

To be honest it wouldn’t surprise me if we matched the wages Bolton offered, but considering last season we offered Maynard a 1 year deal, I doubt we fancied even giving Doyle 2 year nevermind 3.

After the Bury fiasco the EFL should be taking a close look at Bolton to prevent a repeat, assuming they finish in the promotion places they won't want to promote a club to League 1 only to kick them out of the EFL before the season starts... again... and a fate that Bolton very nearly succumbed to.

Only a few years ago, these sorts of 'insane' salaries Bolton are throwing around would have been pocket change to them. Shows how much things change, and you wonder if most of the upstairs staff at Bolton go back to the Premier League days and it hasn't yet sunk in that £4k per week is no longer money they'll be making back with interest on TV deals.

Crazy and stinks of not learning any lessons at all, you could say they have the fan base but even that caveat is uncertain during the pandemic however long this virus hovers around for.

Fair point, I must admit I'd forgotten about Pope.
He was signed for £150,000 but after a good start, Robins left and he was then a bit of a let down TBH, he got injured and didn't play much after that and didn't play at Wembley.

Ellison had left Chester by mutual consent so there was no fee.

Don't forget that Tony Stewart was new to the Chairman's job so previous failings were nothing to do with him.
(TBF to the previous owners it was ITV digital that did for us and a good few others.)

He wanted us to move up the leagues and build a new ground and was prepared to use his own wealth to do so.

It took us until we were at the new stadium in 2012-13 before we eventually got a promotion so he was taught a few harsh lessons along the way, with quite a few managers paying the price.

Before buying us in 2008, he had never had anything to do with football he was just a local businessman who was approached to help the club.

In the last 12 years, he has learned how to run a football club and we are now probably in the top 5 sustainable clubs in the EFL, maybe higher.

I accept that other clubs might think we were throwing a bit of cash about around that time but nothing like Bournemouth, Wigan and Bolton.

Wait, you didn't go up to L1 until 12/13? Wow, I've misremembered that in that case. I thought you went up the season after that deduction!

Fair enough, if you're being ran sustainably now and cheers for the responses. Happy to admit that I'm a bit bitter/biased as we seem to be continually hamstrung by sticking to a sensible budget.

You are probably remembering we were favourites to go up in 2010 but lost 3 2 to the Daggers.
With the exception of Ryan Taylor we just didn't turn up on the day and got what we deserved TBH.

For 1 season only yes, I’d presume so. Id also presume that you d have to prove how up shit creek financially you are due to the effects of the COVID lockdown?
