Gotta be done, hasn't it? :D

I've been drinking more craft beer lately. I still prefer cask, but it's good to branch out. The Beer Boutique in Putney is great. It's a shop/pub that has an incredible range of bottled beers. I'm going there for Burns Night next week. Apparently Brewdog are running the whole thing which should be good!

I've also heard about an Oakham's Pub/Oriental Restaurant somewhere in London but I haven't been able to locate it yet. Need to get myself there at some stage.

I have been trying many different French beers whilst I've been over here, found a few gems but far too many blond beers for my liking. Looking forward to having some proper beer when I get back to the UK next month.

Been drinking a lot of Weissbiers recently...Weihenstephaner, Schneider weisse and Maisel. Had a cracking Welsh wheat the other day down the local, will have to find out what it's called.

I just can't be getting on with wheat beers. I almost always think they taste like beans.

I'm also not a fan of wheat beers. Never found one I liked.

I quite like them occasionally but not a regular tipple. Good to see this thread anyway. Not had anything very exciting lately but oh well!

Anyone recommend any good porters? I usually get a couple at Christmas time but found it impossible to source any this year.

Would be useful for me too. I don't really drink them because the majority I've had haven't been great. Want to know if it's just personal taste or I've just not had the best.

Gonna head down to Ship in a Bottle in Liverpool this week and pick up a few bottles to have after my exams! Last time I was in there (a long time ago now) I got a lovely picture of Alty's mug on a CAMRA thingy.

What's the devil lager Weatherspoons have been plugging? Mates have been raving about it, but I thought little of it. Really need to start remembering the names of them.

It's a craft one isn't it? Think I've had it. They do Brewdog's 'This is Lager' and there's Devil's Backbone IPA or something? Think that's right. I wasn't mad about it either to be honest. And I'm a big IPA fan.

Devil's backbone, that's the one. Very, very average. Bengal tiger (?) is another that I thought was overly hyped.

The new Guinness Dublin Porter is really good. I'm a big fan of Sainsbury's Taste The Difference London Porter too.

1FFACAS, shirley?

Anyone know any decent sites for buying single bottles? I have a book called "300 Beers To Try Before You Die" and I'm starting to run out of ones to try that I can get hold of easily.

Good point. New era, new name. Can a mod do the honours?

You've made good progress if you're running out! Do a few stick out as favourites?

PP linked to a really good site for bottled beer once. He might be the man to help.

True that! Not bad for a can and I now have company so things are looking up.

Can't think of many good beers I've had lately anyway. Had a nice amber around Christmas and I'm not usually mad about them. Wish I could remember the names though!

I actually think it highlights the lack of decent places to buy beer in Torquay. I've only done 24, haha.

From the book, I remember particularly enjoying Budvar, Chimay Bleue, Hoegaarden (I especially love Hoegaarden), Manns Original, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Wells Banana Bread Beer.

My favourite ale at the moment however is Skinners Heligan Honey, a Cornish golden ale made with honey. It's divine.

what's the difference between a real ale and a craft beer

CAMRA coined the term real ale to describe beer brewed in the traditional British way and served from cask. I won't bore you with all the details, but the important bit is that secondary fermentation occurs in the cask. That is, the beer is only slightly fizzy when served, but all that fizz comes from CO2 created by fermentation in the cask rather than CO2 being actively added to a 'dead' (CAMRA pejorative term) beer served from a keg.

I still prefer cask ale but craft beer is often very nice too. A lot of craft brewers don't pasteurise and they use a wide range of hops, so some of the beers are really quite good.

Craft is trendier and is where the money is being made. Presumably because it's easier for ex lager drinkers to make the transition to something which looks and is served in the same way as what they've been used to.

Yes, this is called Oaka at the Mansion House or something. In Kennington. Has been on my mental to do list too as I like their beers, although I do recall reading that it isn't particularly "pubby". Beer Boutique sounds good...

I've used these guys before, when ordering beer (indeed, got a nice box over Christmas) http://www.alesbymail.co.uk/ They've got a very good range including some really quite obscure stuff. You usually have to order a certain amount with these places, but they do let you mix and match.

Couple of others I know of as well: http://www.realalewarehouse.co.uk/ http://www.beerhawk.co.uk/ (seem to be strong on their foreign beers)

Got some Innis & Gunn oak age beer bottles here in the house to have at the weekend. Had one of theirs before with a toffee flavour in it which was pretty good
