I’m a League One poster by trade and rarely venture into the dizzy heights of the Premier League threads. However, upon logging in, I spotted the “Shearer vs Rooney” thread and quite fancied a snoop, before going onto add my own opinion to the debate.

The resident troll popped up, real debate got lost, before being found again.

So now I am here…thinking “I wonder what 1FF’s overall Premier League XI would look like?”.

Here’s your chance gentlemen (and ladies, if present….)…

Send me your PMs with your choices in the following layout:

Goalkeepers

1.
2.
3.

Right Back
1.
2.
3.

Left Back
1.
2.
3.

Central Defenders

1.
2.
3.

Midfielders

1.
2.
3.

Wide Midfielders / Wingers
1.
2.
3.

Strikers

1.
2.
3.

I’m asking for your top 3 choices per position so I can decide whether it will be a 442 or 433 at the end – sometimes it’s difficult just picking one “standout” player.

If I can have them by the end of the day tomorrow, I’ll post the results some time on Friday.

Of course if you genuinely couldn’t give a shit, then don’t bother! :2thumb:

I'd do one but it's pretty much all United's side in the 90's but I'd have Henry and Bergkamp up front and Tony Adams and JT in defence.

I can imagine the list that Johnny has put together...

Vinnie Samways, Michael Branch, Gareth Farrelly, Paul Gerrard etc

One is not like the other - not that Bergkamp should be one of the top two strikers. It's become trendy to label Bergkamp overrated - putting him on the same level as Ledley King is a disservice.

Henry - Drogba is the choice up top. I think Aguero is much nearer to this team than he will be credited.

My team:
Cech
Neville - Terry - Adams - Cole
Scholes - Lampard - Giggs
Ronaldo - Drogba - Henry

I'm not putting Bergkamp on the same level as King, Bergkamp was clearly better. I just meant neither deserve to be in the team but will both probably get quite a few votes.

My team, for what's it worth:

Schmeichel

Neville
Terry
Ferdinand
Cole

Scholes
Gerrard
Vieira

Ronaldo
Shearer
Henry

Ahh, that makes more sense.

Neville, Cole, Terry, Ronaldo, and Henry are all pretty certain to be in the side. I reckon Schmeichel will, too, but I'm interested to see how people came to that decision - Cech has more clean sheets, a better clean sheet to game ratio, fewer goals conceded per match, and the highest save percentage of the obvious choices (Cech/Schmeichel/Seaman/VDS). I imagine it's rosy retrospection, which likely affects nearly all of the positions.

Gerrard vs. Lampard will be another contentious one - some will say both deserve a place, but Scholes is more certain for me.

I had Cech second in my list. You're right, you could easily make an argument for having him in there and all the statistics are on his side, but I made the decision purely from just watching them. I do, however, think Cech's stats are helped by playing for such a well-drilled and defensively competent side for much of his time at Chelsea, especially under Mourinho. In the last decade or so, Chelsea have often had an exceptional back four who would struggle to concede even if they had Hilario in goal for a whole season. That's not to discredit Cech, of course, who is a wonderful goalkeeper.

The Gerrard v Lampard debate will be done to death and I still can't decide myself. That was purely a gut feeling.

Shearer over Drogba everyday of the week.

Drogba was brilliant but I tend to feel he is a tad overated. For someone who played up top on his own for one of the top two sides in the league for a fair few years straight his scoring record is merely good rather than top class. In terms of goals there wasn't that much between him and Rooney who played a lot deeper and offered much more in terms of creativity and defensive output.

I suppose his performances in big games gives him the nod ahead of Rooney but it's tight between those two and depends on what you want from your team. Shearer should be the automatic pick though.

Also disagree that it has become trendy to slate Begkamp. It's much more trendy to revere him as one of the best players in premier league history based on isolated incidents of supreme skill without looking at the bigger picture. The truth of the matter he is at best a tier two (behind the likes of Henry,Ronaldo, Gerrard, Scholes etc) legend and I'd venture to say more of a tier 3.

That world cup semi goal aside I just dont remember any real big game goals and performances from him and from a personal perspective he was way down the list of Arsenal players I feared when we played them. I think he benefits from coming at a time when real outstanding foreign players were new to the league and from people remembering his brilliant moments rather than his overall contribution. Had he been arou nd in more recent times he'd be seen more Berbatov than a real elite attacker. In fact that might be a slight on Berbatov whose goal record is far better.

Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes are all about equal in m eyes. It's just personal opinion.

My team

Schmeichal
Neville Campbell Rio Cole

Keane Viera

Scholes
Ronaldo Henry
Sherear

I don't see why not.

He was the best Central defender in the league for a good while. Was consistantly excellent throughout is career and had all the attributes Terry had with more pace to boot. He also made Kolo Toure look like a good centre back for any number of years. A remarkable feat. I think you could pick any combination of the three but I opted for Campbell mainly because although he is a massive Tory c*** he at least isnt a masssive racist c***.

I thought we were judging players by their ability, not their personality. Terry, and Ashley Cole for that matter, are horrifically underrated due to their undoubted cuntishness.

Cole is absolutely not underrated but Terry is.

Pretty much everyone has him as a definite for this team but he went through long periods where he at best average which are largely glossed over now. His attacking game left a lot to be desired and he simply wasn't as good a ball carrier as the elite modern fullbacks.

I still went with him but it was partly as I felt no Chelsea player in a best prem 11 would be ridiculous.

An obvious difference between your stats and people's rosy retrospection is probably that the former includes his time at Villa and City while the latter doesn't?

I don't imagine taking just the stats from his time at United would put him above Cech in that respect either tbf. As mentioned, different teams set up differently. I still reckon Peter>Petr though.

Kasper will be so pleased to have made the majority of lists. And he's not played much in the premier league really. What a feat.

First 11 -

P. Schmeichel (Man United)

Ivanovic (Chelsea)
Terry (Chelsea)
Ferdinand (Man United)
A. Cole (Arsenal/Chelsea)

Vieira (Arsenal)
Gerrard (Liverpool)
Scholes (Man United)

Bergkamp (Arsenal)
Henry (Arsenal)
Shearer (Newcastle United)

Ivanovic is a controversial choice but I simply hate Gary Neville with a passion, although respected him as a player and think he's an excellent pundit. I just refuse to put him in! Roy Keane doesn't hold a candle to Patrick Vieira unless you're a United supporter. It was very hard to leave Frank Lampard out of my 11 as he's a legend of our game but Scholes was technically the best player we had for donkeys years while Gerrard carried his club year after year. I haven't included Ronaldo simply because he's gone up a couple of levels further since joining Real Madrid and only had a couple of outstanding seasons in a United shirt. Other noticeable absentees that are more than worth a mention are Zola, Giggs, Keane, Pires, Campbell, Hyypiä, Cech, Silva, Augero and Suarez.

Apologies for the delay – busy weekend!

I have listed both a 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 based on the votes that came through:

4-3-3

Peter Schmeichel

Gary Neville – Rio Ferdinand – John Terry – Ashley Cole

Roy Keane – Paul Scholes – Patrick Vieira

Cristiano Ronaldo – Alan Shearer – Thierry Henry

4-4-2

Peter Schmeichel

Gary Neville – Rio Ferdinand – John Terry – Ashley Cole

Cristiano Ronaldo – Paul Scholes – Patrick Vieira – Ryan Giggs

Thierry Henry - Alan Shearer

Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Paul Scholes, Patrick Vieira, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry & Alan Shearer absolutely pissed it.

Rio Ferdinand edged out Tony Adams
Ryan Giggs edged out Robert Pires
Roy Keane edged out both Frank Lampard & Steven Gerrard

For shits & giggles, here’s the worst “best PL XI” based on least number of votes that came in:

Jens Lehmann

Warren Barton – Vincent Kompany – Jaap Stam – Gael Clichy

David Ginola – Claude Makelele – Cesc Fabregas - Eden Hazard

Robbie Fowler – Andy Cole
