Ok now I know these sort of threads are usually done in pre season when we’re all bored with no footie but I’ve been chatting to a couple of lads tonight about our potential tie with Chelsea and we got reminiscing about when we last played them and how unreal it was to see Ruud Gullit playing at Blundell Park, so I’m interested to know what all of your top 3’s would be?
Mine are:

1- Ruud Gullit playing here for Chelsea
2- Gazza playing here for Burnley
3- I’m torn between Alan Shearer playing here for Newcastle or Gary Linekar playing here for Spurs.

That game with Burnley was the only time I’ve ever seen all 4 sides of Blundell Park give someone a standing ovation when Gazza came on as a sub in the second half.

Now all your turns.

Cristiano Ronaldo for United
Wayne Rooney for United

They’re the two that spring to mind

Alan Shearer when he played against us for Newcastle.
Gareth Bale for Spurs before he became what he is today.
Dennis Bergkamp also turned out for Arsenal against us in a friendly.

No particular order for those three, but would probably put Shearer at the top.

Gazza was on the bench for Boston when they played against us in September 2004 and they came to our place - I remember he got mobbed before and after the game. Steve Evans never put him on though.

I'm slightly to young to have seen Carlos Valderrama play here for Real Valladolid in 1992.

Micheal Owen, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Gerrard Pique and Wayne Rooney probably up there.

I always say the best performance came from an ageing Teddy Sheringham playing for West Ham on a Tuesday night in a championship game. He was sensational.

Seen all four sides giving Clive Mendonca a standing ovation when he came on the pitch before Town v Charlton in about 2004ish. Muzzy Izzet's overhead bicycle kick got a lot of respect and applause from the Town fans too.

To add to yours, Edgar Davids played at Blundell Park for Barnet too.

A strong Arsenal side in the FA Cup, the season they won their first Premier League I think it was, featured the likes of Bergkamp and Vieira who almost had his season if not career ended by a Richard Prokas tackle.

Patrick Vieira went on to lift the World Cup, Richard Prokas went on to repair my parents' roof.

Also, Pascal Chimbonda

Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle probably.

Ossie Ardiles once played for us in a friendly, but that game took place at Gloucester.

Christophe Dugarry is another one I can remember. Probably be no. 3 behind Hoddle and Waddle if you want the top 3 players that have played at our ground(s)

Just ahead of Peter Beagrie and Martin Kemp.

Rakish would be top of the pile at Whaddon Road, followed ever so closely by my favourite player of all time - Gazza. He came on as a late sub for Boston in August 2004. He was appalling though and was outclassed by a 19 year old David Bird.

Lol at Tom, someone had to say it.

I saw a 17 year old Ryan Giggs play at the Abbey in a league cup 1991, he was lightning.

As above, Glenn Hoddle, Chris Waddle, John Aldridge back in the day. Robin van Persie played against us for Man U but generally they didn’t have a team of legends and Rooney didn’t play. Saw Jamie Vardy against us this summer but then he was here for Fleetwood years ago. Davids too. Think di Canio might have played against at the Abbeyus. Des Walker too. Actually I’m pretty sure Peter Shilton played against us in 92, he must be up there.

Cantona and Schmeichel played against us in a friendly back in the 90s. I didn’t go to that one mind.

Dennis Bergkamp for Arsenal in an FA Cup replay.

Gazza when he played for Boro

Also Beckham and Scholes at the start of their careers in a League Cup game.

Can’t really think of any as any decent cup match since 1999 has always been away and was too young to go when Scholes and co came and debuted. Barnet also played us at home just before David’s signed so only saw us try and boot the f*** out of him away from home. (And have little effect).

The closest would probably be Dele Ali! Got bloody Lines sent off feigning a head butt or Jordan Pickford who got sent off for Bradford.

Never get a Premier League side at home.

Arsenal and Liverpool where just before i started going, Bergkamp scored a wonder goal didn’t he but we were penalties away from changing history and denying Arsenal their double! Aside from Rotherham the only English side Wenger faced twice and failed to beat.

Good point, once you visit Brunton Park after Christmas I'll be able to say that the biggest legend I've seen there is F-I-R-T-H-Y.

We've not really done a lot since I started going to games in 2003.

Guess you have to look at the Chelsea FA Cup game in 2013.

Terry, Essien, Ramires, Willian, Mata, Torres all played. Eto'o was an unused sub.

Igor Latte-Yedo was special but sadly he probably isn’t the worst player to ever play for us. We’ve had many “legends”....

Another one for Alan Shearer. His first game after signing for Newcastle was a pre-season friendly at Sincil Bank.

The most talented player we’ve ever had I’d say, he also wrote off a lot of money we owed him when we went into administration so we owe him a debt of gratitude for that too, a top player and person.

I also remember seeing Shearer at Whaddon Road. He deliberately pulled his foot away from scoring what would have been his record-breaking goal for Newcastle because he wanted to do it in their home game the following week (they were 2-0 up and it was near the end of the game).
