Is this just a northern thing?

I've just been speaking to some Southern colleagues on the phone about what I'm having for dinner.

They replied with 'I know it's grim up North but isn't it a bit early to be having dinner'?

Surely your three meals go like this:

Breakfast
Dinner
Tea

I was brought up BDT, but due to hanging around with Southerners and a fair few few non-British English speakers, I have had to adapt to the BLD format. It's always fun explaining this to a Korean.

Lunch/dinner is interchangeable around here for the mid-day meal, but the evening meal is always tea. Maybe we're weird

It's not a Northern thing, as I'm about as Southern as it comes and it's Breakfast, Dinner, Tea. Anybody who says otherwise can go fuck themselves.

Well, for most normal people, anyway. I remember when I was a young kid staying over a friends house, and it was like 6pm and his mum came into the room asking what we wanted for "dinner". I was absolutely bamboozled as to why these weirdos were having dinner at tea time.

What do northerners call the break they take to eat in the middle of the working day? Presumably not lunch break, which seems so ingrained into me that I can't imagine it being called anything else. Dinner break? WTF is that?

And when you get home in the evening, you sit down and eat a meal around the dinner table. Dinner I tells ya.

Yep Dave, I was brought up saying supper too. Toast, cheese and crackers, cereals, etc. Think that came from my grandparents more than my parents.

Breakfast, Dinner, Tea. Occasionally lunch gets swapped in for dinner. But Tea stays.

Worked at a residential home and we had to record what the service users had at meal times. Always made a point of crossing out where it said 'dinner' and putting 'tea' instead, with such apparently important documents youd have thought they'd get something like that correct but apparently not. Probably written by some French-wannabe, bloody southerners.

"However, the use of the term dinner for the midday meal is strongest among working-class people, especially in the English Midlands, North of England and the central belt of Scotland."
