Sports Direct sales are not really indicative of actual shirt sales for the clubs but even still it is depressing reading , it really annoys me the amount of Premiershit shirts being worn in the Town centre.

This is a far bigger problem in the south than it is in the north. Imagine if a place like Burnley was in the south, they'd be non-league standard. In southern terms, based on town population, it's like Weston-Super-Mare reaching the top flight. I am jealous of the support teams have up north.

The thing is, Bristol is quite far away from other major Cities. A place like Oldham who has both Manchester clubs on their doorsteps, you won't see a United or Man City shirt because its in Oldham and its frowned upon as wrong as its rivalry if you like. We don't have that attitude down south which is frustrating!

Just proves we aren't actually a backwater. Just a large population starved of success. If Nottm Forest have won the European cup then no reason why we couldn't.

The West Country will always have this issue. Even though we're in the football league Yeovil, Bristol City, Exeter, Torquay & Plymouth have always suffered when attracting players because we are perceived to be miles away from civilisation. Oh and Rovers.

Hundred miles to arguably the world's numbero uno City, a similar distance to the UK's second City so all a bit of a myth really. And if Swansea can do it.

Who buys football shirts from Sports Direct anyway?

You'd find plenty of United and City shirts in Oldham

On the other hand is arguè that the non league football in the south, and particularly south west to be of a relatively decent standard. Of course that's not really something to brag about

Yes, but the point I was trying to make is that if a club like Weston was up north, it probably wouldn't even be non-league anyway!

So you're saying what? I can't quite see your point? You really think that if Burnley were in the south they would be non-league level?

A very odd statement. It's all subjective, there's no way to prove or disprove such a ridiculous statement.

If you are a Liverpudlian and support Liverpool, I'd imagine you'd pick up your shirt from the Liverpool Football Club shop.
If you live outside of Liverpool and don't want to pay P&P etc, you go to your local shop - of which Sports Direct have dominated the market of late. But yeah, still odd we have so many sold here.

I largely agree with the "Oldham/Manchester" point; there is nothing deemed 'wrong' with wearing teams shirts for higher standard leagues when the local teams have been so low in the leagues for so long.

I don't honestly see how Burnley would possibly be non-league if they were in the south. Why is it so different and harder in the south? Just because of London? See Brentford as a great example, they get pretty great crowds and are some of the best supporters around and they are very close to bigger clubs.

We probably have more Hull fans in Scunthorpe than we do Scunny fans, since the Bridge was built fans from Barton (where the bridge is) have found a much easier way to get Hull than the ferry across. Plus, we actually have quite a few Grimsby fans around this area despite the rivalry.

I think the southern comment for Burnley is the comparison of population. Weston-Super-Mare is (largely) a small insignificant seaside town in the South West. Burnley have a smaller population (wikipedia) but obviously can host a Premier League table through the general "football support" and denser population bases.

Nothing to do with the difficulty of the leagues.

More money in the South and more things to do than watch football.

Bristol v Burnley is no comparison. One is a Gamma + World City on par with Adelaide, Phoenix, Cologne and better than Glasgow, La Paz and Orlando. The absolute fact is there is much more wealth here and many more things to do than watch football.

However, if Bristol City reach the Premier League we'd explode.

Dunno, but someone seems to know as show by the link above and below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_city

London > Manchester > Birmingham > Edinburgh > Bristol.

Four out of those Five most important UK Cities have massively underachieving football clubs. The one that isn't is in the North of England.

Surely you aren't including London as one of the 4? Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs? Are they massively underachieving?

Yes of course Tom. How many European cups have London clubs won? Is it none?
