Finally it's here and I am expecting nothing less than 3 points on Saturday. I'm sure we will go 3-5-2 on Saturday as that's the way we have lined up the last 4 pre-season games with narrow defeats to Ipswich and Norwich, a win against Coventry and a draw at Peterborough on Saturday.

I'm expecting us to sell 5000. Any idea how many you will bring Newport fans?

Obviously hoping for a win, but who knows how the Exiles will react to their current 'plight.'

I don't think I've seen a Utd squad with this much strength in depth. We will have at least 2, maybe 3 of our best players (of the last couple of seasons) miss this game, and it doesn't concern me at all. Having seen how well we've coped (against higher opposition) with 352, 532 & 433 formations will make us a quite formidable team I'd think. Plenty of graft and movement in there, I just hope our finishing in front of goal improves.

I'm predicting a close 2-1 to the Amber Army. . . ;-)

Reckon we'll get the 3 points, but it will be a hard fought match, and it won't be as easy as some U's are thinking. I'm going for a 1-0 win or perhaps a 2-1. Newport will be out to prove people wrong I feel.

I think we'll lose 2-0. The daggers will be out for Money and it'll become the beginning of a shit season, bringing us all back to reality.

If Richard is to be believed (he probably isn't), no Berry or Simpson means the 3 5 2 will largely select itself. The choices seem to be Coulson or Taft at the back and does Donaldson get a start. My best guess would be:

Beasant
Roberts Legge Taft
Omozusi Keane Morrisey Donaldson Dunk
Corr Slew

5,407 (incl 118 exiles)

4-0 (but just as likely to be 0-1 with a red card for our Barry)

What odds for a Newport win? On paper it looks like a home banker but you never know....

No idea how many we'll be taking, there's still tickets available to purchase so that tells me we haven't sold our allocation. If we take anything from this game i'll be happy, head says Cambridge will win comfortably, heart says an away win haha.

I don't expect Donaldson to start after only a weeks' training, Berry's 6 day head injury reg. is up today so may just be in the starting XI.

From the little I've seen, Beasant looks much more of a solid keeper than Dunn. Taft oozes class. Slew looks unbeatable at the moment, just needs to stay calm in front of goal. As much as I love Tom Champion, you can tell Keane is a huge upgrade. As I said previously, 2-1 Berry & Corr with two headers from set pieces. COME ON YOU Us!

Beasant
Legge Roberts Taft
Newton Keane Dunk
Berry Morrissey
Slew Corr

I reckon we'll go 4-4-2. The 3-5-2 experiment is just a smokescreen. ;-)

Beasant
Omozusi Legge Roberts Taylor
Newton Keane Morrissey Dunk
Slew Corr

And yes that is Greg Taylor at left back. We'll lose 2-0 in front of 6,000 and our message board will go into meltdown.

I should never have doubted Dickie. We were ready, solid and clinical, no pre-season hangover for us. Newport were a tad unlucky as our second goal came when one of their defenders was injured and played Corr on at 2-0 (no sympathy - they could have put the ball out themselves) and missed a (soft) penalty. But we were worth the win and looked very assured.

Barry Corr is just class. He's Tom Elliott x 10, an excellent centre forward.

Long way to go and Newport have obviously got a lot of off field issues at the moment so not the best barometer for us but you can only beat who's in front of you.

That penalty was shocking too! Our injuries are also adding up which isn't helping matters, plus not playing Poole and playing Hayden who joined like the day before was a stupid mistake by Terry.

You looked like a very young team and my prediction of you finishing bottom won't be too far wrong unless you recruit 4 or 5 decent players.

Would give us about a 6/10 today, which is encouraging considering we won 3-0. Newport weren't great at all and whilst there's certainly still areas we need to improve on, we looked excellent in parts and watching us you certainly believe that we are capable of taking it up a notch once we get a few more games under our belts.

Barry Corr, absolutely brilliant.

We do have a fair few youngsters so it is going to be a very long hard slog this year, shame really.

I must be one of the very few who didn't think Newport were that bad. Played it around nicely at times, unfortunately not a single one of their players can shoot accurately.

I thought we were okay, plenty more to come from us of that I'm sure.

My excitement soon disappeared when I remembered the garbage refs we get at this level, they don't half enjoy ruining a game.

Comfortable victory yesterday I felt, Newport looked ok in the first half but they just couldn't hit the target.

For those that are interested the ball definitely crossed the line from our first corner, unfortunately for us the officials didn't quite see it that way.

In a nutshell, Barry corr looked bloody brilliant, not sure I like the back line with coulson playing on the left of a back three with the wing backs, he just to one footed to play there, think there's plenty more to come.

Get ready for the set piece onslaught fellas.

Deserved the win but 3-0 probably flattered - even though we actually scored 4 goals (that spilled Legge shot was surely over the line after 4 minutes?).

We huffed and puffed in midfield at times. Donaldson got some pitch time in his favoured AMF role but that indulgence was a luxury and I can't see him starting at Rotherham or Carlisle. What is his role going to be? He's neither a round peg nor a square peg. With the choices available, I can see him starting less than 20 games this season, especially if we are out of the cups early.

That said, I was purring at times yesterday. The Corrminator was a joy. How did Southend not make more effort to hold on to him? Legge was magnificent, as was the back 3 generally, but Josh needs to improve on the odd worldy pass combined with wanders down blind alleys if he is to be the option bringing the ball out or Taft will get in and retain a place. Even Sam Beasant (pen save) eased our nerves between the sticks, with Chris Dunn already back on the bench. We have the personnel, with plenty of scope for rotation and dealing with form and injury setbacks, to have a more than adequate midfield - it's just not there yet.

Newport were poor. John-Lewis showed flashes of ability but was well shepherded. The passing only really came out when we stood off them and took a breather having got the comfortable lead (2 shots on target including the penalty).

I'm with ambernuts. Newport weren't that bad, and we've certainly seen much worse L2 sides last year. Their major problem is their strike force, as I don't think LJL and Boden are good enough for League 2, and I'm sure they'll bring in a couple of strikers on loan eventually. I don't think they're nailed on for relegation, when one takes into account the other poor sides in this league. Also, we have to remember they've got a much changed squad this year, and coming to The Abbey for your opening match isn't ideal.

I'll wait til they play clubs like Dagenham, Mansfield and York before passing judgement though.

What other poor sides in this league? It's hard to figure that out yet surely!?
I see your point, but this also applies to Newport. It's hard to dismiss them after just one game, especially when everyone at The Abbey could see that their main problem was LJL and his inability to hit the target. Other than that, they didn't look like relegation certs to me. Plenty of time to bring in a couple of loanees if LJL continues to disappoint. Apparently they also have quite a few players out due to injuries, but I stand to be corrected on this.

By poor sides, I meant the ones whose target is escaping relegation year after year. Imo, this year both Daggers and York will struggle, so I'll wait and see how Newport fare against these sides before saying they're definitely going down, unlike some who have already made their mind up.
