Cardiff went into this match without an away victory all season, but haven't lost at the Amex arena in their previous four visits. Brighton on the other hand had kept three clean sheets in their last three games in all competitions. And with only two places separating the sides before kick off, it looked like an even match was about to be played out.
Brighton started the match in a much stronger fashion then the Bluebirds, keeping hold of the ball and looking menacing when the flanks were used. It was then from the wings that the first chance came, Lua Lua picking the ball up and striking towards Marshall's goal, but not with enough conviction to beat the keeper. Following this continued dominance from the right side came the opening goal, Mats Daehli was unable to pick up Bruno's forward runs, and when a diagonal ball was played over his head, it was Bruno who expertly lobbed the ball over the head of David Marshall and into the back of the net.
It seemed hard to predict where Cardiff would find a reply, due to the 20 minutes of constant Brighton pressure leading up to their goal, but when you have a man like Kenwyne Jones up front, you can create a chance out of nothing. And it was from play like this that the Bluebirds equalized just one minute later. A long ball from Whittingham was expertly placed on the head of Jones, who after a mistake between Dunk and Stockdale, was able to nod home into an empty net from the edge of the box. After the goal the game continued to be dominated by the hosts, but they couldn't find a way through, going into half time.
After the break, Brighton continued to control the match, but could not break down the wall of David Marshall, but it wasn't as if they didn't have the chances to do it. Lua Lua was first to test the Scot, but his deflected effort was sent wide of the post, then Joe Bennett sent a diving header goal-bound, but was again stopped by the inform keeper. Then came the save of the match, a fierce drive from Lewis Dunk was stopped by Marshall who held onto the ball and kept the score at 1-1. Shots from Gardner and Bennett again were still not accurate enough to beat Marshall who kept his side in the game and won them the point that they deserved following such an inspirational performance.
After the final whistle, Cardiff have now jumped up into 13th spot in the table, only 5 points off the play-off places. Next up for the Bluebirds is a trip to the seaside on Friday night, they face Blackpool who are yet register a league win and sit bottom of the Championship table. Brighton dropped to 18th following this result and will be looking to change their fortunes with a trip to Watford on Saturday. A tough place to visit as they currently sit joint top of the league table, only goal difference separating them and the top spot.
