Wednesday: Westwood, Loovens, Mattock, Buxton, Palmer, Maguire, Semedo, Coke, Maghoma, Nuhiu, May.
Cardiff went into this fixture without a victory in their last 3 league matches. Sheffield Wednesday however had picked up 13 points out of a possible 18 in their last 6 matches. And with 10 places separating the sides in the league table, the majority of people would have backed the away side to snatch another league win.
Wednesday started the match brighter, and almost took a lead within 6 minutes when Stevie May rounded keeper David Marshall, only to have his shot cleared off the line by Fabio da silva. This spurred the Bluebirds on to improve, and had the chance to do that when Aron Gunnarson's header was pushed away by Westwood and Jones failed to tap home the rebound. However Westwood could do nothing about the opening goal, a world class cross from Peter Whittingham, was powerfully headed home by center back Sean Morrison. Cardiff dominated possession for the rest of the half, but rarely had as chance to extend their lead going into half time.
Unfortunately for Cardiff, the second half started much like the first. Wednesday were playing with a high tempo and caught City out only 3 minutes into the half, a drilled cross from Maguire was to much for the goalscorer Morrison to deal with, and his block sent the ball spinning into the right hand corner of Marshall's net. Cardiff were clearly unhappy at the manor of the goal and had a spell camped in Wednesday territory with chances for Whittingham and Gunnarson both trickling wide of the post. Then came the moment City were waiting for, the introduction of new loan signing Ravel Morrison. He made an instant impact skipping past his marker and earning the Bluebirds a corner, which didn't lead to anything. City's constant pressure did eventually result in another goal, Kenwyne Jones nodded the ball to Pilkington who flicked the ball past Glenn Loovens and volleyed the ball home. Neither team created another clear cut chance, with only Macheda who turned the ball past Westwood, only to be ruled offside.
City moved up 1 spot to 15th spot, while Wednesday dropped to 9th place. Next up for the Bluebirds is a midweek trip to Brighton, Wednesday on the other hand travel back to Hillsborough to face Ipswich.
