Carlisle Utd v Bury, Saturday 13th September 2014

This Saturday we see Bury making the 240 mile round trip to Carlisle, probably one one of the shortest distances an away team has to make to Carlisle. Bury go into this game unbeaten in their last 5 league games which sees them sitting in 6th position in the league, Carlisle have yet to register a win and sit 22nd with just 3 points from 6 games.

You could say that Bury are the clear favourites, but looking back over the history of the 2 teams, Bury have not beaten Carlisle for an incredable 13 games going all the way back to the 94/95 season. Overall stats see Carlisle with 20 wins to Bury's 11, with 5 draws, although no draws have ever taken place at Brunton Park.

Carlisle were expected to bounce back from relegation to challenge for League Two honours, but moved quickly to sack manager Graham Kavanagh after a poor start to the campaign.

Tony Caig and Paul Thirlwell have been handed temporary charge of the team, leading Carlisle to victory over Accrington Stanley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and a 4-4 draw at home to Wimbledon last weekend. Managing director John Nixon moved to quell speculation about a new appointment, saying on Wednesday that he did not expect to have a permanent successor to Kavanagh in place before tomorrow’s game.

Carlisle United are likely to be without defender Troy Archibald-Henville who has an ongoing shin injury but is back in training. Striker Billy Paynter has been absent with a hamstring injury but is in line to return for the Cumbrians.

Bury captain Jim McNulty will return after serving a one-match suspension, which will probably mean that Bury manager David Flitcroft will revert back to his preferred formation of 3-5-2, last week saw Bury revert to the traditional 4-4-2 formation which saw them take a point at Wycombe with a 0-0 draw.

Defender Keil O'Brien (knee) and winger Joe Thompson (back) will miss out but strikers Daniel Nardiello (groin) and Clive Platt (calf) could both return after they have had pain killing injections during the week.

Interviewed in the week regarding the high expections of the fans, Flitcroft had this to say. “I think the expectation from media, from the fans, from the players and the management is to win every game,” said Flitcroft. “It was no different last season, when we had to win games to stay in the league. This season is a different pressure, but it is a fantastic pressure to have.

“The players have embraced it and Carlisle is another opportunity for us to go and be competitive and pit our wits against what was a League One team last season.”

Former Bury player Jamie Hoyland was quoted in the week saying, "The signings Bury have made this season have been of a high standard and I genuinely believe Bury have the best squad to choose from in League 2". With this in mind, this is the team Flitcroft may put out tomorrow, glad it is his decison and not mine, some good players on the bench.

I fully expect Bury to take the 3 points on Saturday and my prediction is for a 2-0 win. Safe journey to all Shakers fans, sing loud and proud as ever.

I personally think this may be a tough one to call. Carlisle on the back of some improved performances and Bury promotion favourites.

2-1 either way.
