Went to the Manor Ground a few times, that was interesting. This was when a lot of notorious Chelsea faces were following Reading away as well.

Nothing on the scale of Portsmouth-Southampton, mind. Went to the game in 2011 and it was absolute carnage, that is a proper rivalry.

We weren't all that far off seeing an Eastleigh - Portsmouth derby next season....

There are three types of derby:

Type 1: mutually acknowledged by both sets of fans. e.g. us Wolves West Brom, Villa Blouse, Wednesday United, Arsenal Spurs, Forest Derby, Pompey Saints, etc. Also known as ding-dong derbies by radio presenters of a certain age who also use the term "early doors" a lot.
Type 2: acknowledged by one side's fans, but mocked by the other side e.g. Bournemouth Saints, Rotherham other Yorkshire teams, Yeovil Swindon. Also known as 'Yeh right derbies"
Type 3: WTF derbies are matches that American soccer rooters think are derbies because they have no fucking clue where anywhere is in Yurp, e.g. Sheffield Wednesday - Ajax, Gillingham - Leeds, Malmo - Real Betis.

There are also the media driven derbies.
Using us as an example, when we play the cheats up the road, the media call it the 'M4 derby' whereas we just don't like /care about them (it's been a bit different this season to be fair). The local press also tried to call games V little Yeovil town the 'Cider derby' where we actually quite like Yeovil and wish them well. While our only real derby is deffo the gas, I would put Cardiff and even Plymouth as more like proper derbies to us than either Swindon or Yeovil.
When we played Reading in the past it used to have that derby 'feel' but that was more about thugs than local pride.
For me it's:
Rovers scum first by an absolute mile
Crapdiff
are derbies.
Swindle
Plymouth??
Reading
localish games that can be lively
Yeovil
A nice trip to the countryside.

The old boys have a thing with the Scouse but our last 15 years or so have tempered that somewhat.

Without sounding disrespectful fella its a one way thing, in my time watching football we've rarely been in the same league and our main meetings have been pre season friendlies, hence I've never found it a rivalry. I get you lot 'hate' us, more so the Rotherham owls but I'll be frank I quite like Rotherham, nice local little club.....

So why, everytime we win at Hillsbrough, 4 wins & 1 draw last 5, do all the Vimtoheads go mental and try an attack the away end? Does that happen when other teams come? The Rotherham Owls are despicable like you allued to. Why you would go and support your biggest rivals just makes me pity them to be honest. Especially when they try and big their alligence up, even though they have sold out to watch a more 'fashionable' club.

Mate give it up. If you have to explain to someone why they should hate you then they probably don't hate you.

FFS you called them vimtoheads

That's the description people from Sheffield Wednesday have in Rotherham. If we are talking about the broader population of Sheffield it's Dee-Dahs. It's just their name. It's not a sly dig!

Wednesday fans don't seem to like us, not sure why. It's a bit one sided though we don't really care about them.

If there's one club I genuinely dislike/hate it's Doncaster. Full of scum. The towns a shithole, the grounds a shithole, the birds are shit , the lads all have greasy slicked back hair and the place is full of caravans.

Plus they dislike us as much as we dislike them, it's a genuine rivalry as opposed to the us and the Sheffield clubs who don't feel the same way as to what Donny feel about us and vice versa.

Last competitive fixture was a while ago now, think Martin Woods scored a screamer for us to win it last time we were in the championship. would prefer to play em competitively now I'm older.

Also helps we're traditionally a better and bigger club than them.

I'm sure I've just seen Southampton - Portsmouth described as carnage

No bias here but for me one of the best derbies with clubs who genuinely hate each other and show it is the Steel city derby.

Living near Sheffield and with scummy Rotherham Owls and Blades (only have a problem with people from Rotherham supporting them). You know how much it means to both clubs and how much both sets of fans genuinely despise the others. Shit little derbies like Derby-Forest, Bristol-Swindon and anybody in the midlands vs anybody in the midlands (bar Birmingham - Villa) just don't compare.

I'd NEVER call City - Swindle a derby....more like bad feeling recently due to their antics when we played them there in November. Cardiff however is at least traditional...and gets messy regularly

Plymouth more of a derby than Swindon? Wait what?!
Tbh I have enjoyed our rivalry with Swindon its what makes football lets not try and play it down because we both dont like eachother and I am sure majority of our fans do not look at them like another Yeovil surely!!

The Plymouth game used to be a bit tasty H20, it's just that we haven't played them in ages.
Before this season, Swindon had a thing going with the gas (Inn on the Green etc) and didn't really bother with us. That's changed after this season.

Hmm always found Swindon games have a bit of an edge tbh. Plymouth were good games especially '04 but not the same as Swindon IMO.
From Swindles point of view they definitely hate us more than Rovers I am sure of that.
It might just be me.

I wonder if the fact you're a Wiltshire man might make it appear that way bud? I always thought Swindon and the gas was a tad fractious but not so much with us. It doesn't really matter though as we can't stand the cheating gits anyway! ;)
Being the biggest club in the South West means they all dislike us but we can live with that.

We all seem to have different definitions. For me a lot of people are describing what I call a 'rivalry', mutual hatred on both sides with a good reason, i.e. I'd say the only rivalry in Yorkshire is Wednesday vs United, but as for 'derbies' there are loads within counties like ours. For us I'd say Bradford, Leeds, Barnsley, Wednesday, United, and maybe Rotherham/Oldham.

From the Swindon fans I know they certainly sadly prefer the Gas to us, It was always more on way rivalry most of the time but have loved the bad feeling between both this season and getting our revenge thats been coming for years. They are not comparative with Yeovil at all of whom their fans are a great bunch In general.

We have several derbies because different generations of our fanbase hate different clubs. Most hate Blackpool, especially the younger generation like me.

My Dad and his generation hate Rovers cos that was who we played most when he was growing up and then he is bitter about Jack Walker buying them up.

My grandad and the older gen (of which we seem to have plenty) hate the Dingles most.

Yeah I agree with that. Hate Donny. A lot of the older lot tend to hate Donny more too.

I don't 'hate' Wednesday, I hate Rotherham Owls who will go on and on about Rotherham then just give it the 'yeah but we don't care about Rotherham'. Thought my vimtohead mates were gunna burst into tears the other month they were that happy when they beat us.

As for that game you've got 2 seasons rolled in to one and the wrong league haha. Lee Williamson scored in the last minute in League 1 at Millmoor, Martin Woods scored a consolation at their council ground in a League 1 defeat. Don't think we've ever played them in the 2nd tier.

We played Donny regularly in 2nd tier back the in 50's, always feisty but not in the same level for bitterness as Wednesday.
