Allardyce is the perfect fit for us if we can get him, which I doubt. Our squad isn't great but it's not as bad as people make out Defoe, Lens, M'vila, Toivenen are all decent and we have some good youth players coming through as well. The defence is the problem, if someone can come in and sort out the defence and get us organised we may surprise a few. I feel Dick had his arm twisted to come back and he came back as he likes the club, but his heart wasn't in it. The main worry for me was it took Dick to resign to get a performance out of the players.

So the new guy will 'be his own man' so to speak and be able to choose his own targets?

Their squad isn't that bad. They've got Defoe who scores goals, so that's a start. It's not like they're firing blanks. If Sam can make them a bit tighter at the back they'll survive and give him time to bring in his own players in January.
Mate I've been their manager on FM, it's a thankless task.

Apparently the real reason he left is because someone poured lemonade over him and it just snowballed from there.

This post deserves recognition.

Surprised Pearson hasn't been mentioned by any on here - seems like the sort of character Sunderland need.
I'm not sure he'd be interested in it. He spent most of last season in the relegation zone I'm not sure he'd want to do it again, and the big difference is that with Leicester he had a squad of players he'd assembled and believed in. He changed the system slowly but surely and when it all came good we went on a great run to stay up, but that's a lot of work to do with a group of players you don't actually know, who don't play the way you've been coaching for the last 3 or 4 years, with time being a massive issue. Pearson won't go into a club wanting to play defensive, hold out for a point football, which is what would probably (likely) lead to a run of spankings.
I think he's more likely to go to a mid championship side with decent prospects and get them playing exciting stuff.
Sunderland don't need exciting, they need safe, and I don't think that's Pearson. (Though he's now successfully avoided relegation with Southampton and Leicester).

So that's a no from Allardyce, Moyes and Dyche.

The poor sods might end up with Rodgers at this rate.

Agree with this. Bournemouth are going to seriously struggle now I think whilst I can see Watford getting dragged into a battle. Villa look very poor whilst Newcastle look very soft. A good solid manager at Sunderland will probably see them pull clear of some of the dross around them.

I read that he didn't take any severance pay, which if true, is a nice touch.

He was fantastic when he was in charge of us - albeit he pretty much bankrupted the club  - we played some great football, particularly in Europe.

Whoever said he should have gone at the end of last season is right.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say Dick Advocaat. He was Rangers manager 15 years or so back if I recall.
Of course. Tbf I don't really consider the SPL as professional football. That's why it probably escaped me.

Seen Rodgers linked. He wouldn't touch it with a barge pole and he'd probably not be the guy to sort a defence out...

Rodgers and our defence, yikes. Seems everybody is distancing themselves from us and might have some trouble getting someone in. Nigel Pearson could be an option would give us a good chance of getting us promoted if we go down.

I doubt Rodgers would keep them up this season (and I'm sure he's completely burned out at the moment), but if he remembered his footballing philosophy he'd be a fantastic medium- long-term appointment.

Allardyce would keep them up, but to what end? They don't seem to have any coherent vision at Sunderland, it's just firefighting every season. They have no identity, no direction. They still get more than 40,000 watching that shit, so a new manager with a plan other than to tread water would surely be welcome, and excused one poxy relegation.

Rodgers hasn't got a footballing philosophy. Pure blagger. Liverpool ended up playing less 'football' than they did under Dalglish towards the end.

Slightly left field, but he's experienced and been all over the place, if nothing else.

Allardyce has got the job. That should see Sunderland safe.

Hopefully this should see us safe. Now we need let Lee Congerton leave as he wants to and do away with this director of football shit, it's been nothing but a disaster.

Surprised he's took this on. While he'll be confident of keeping them up, where do they go from there? It's gonna be the same year in year out isn't it?

Best of luck to them, they're going to need all they can get, especially if he brings in Nolan.
