Quite a tough group for the next qualifying campaign. Only really Kazakhstan you might bank on for a win, but the away travel will be ruthless.

This group doesn't look tough at all tbh.

Tasty ties against Scotland and Northern Ireland for us. Hopefully we won't fuck things up this time and make our first U21 tournament since... Portugal 2006!

i can remember the 2009 playoffs vs France. first leg 1:1 in Germany and in the second leg 0:0 before Höwedes was heading us to the Euros in the dying seconds of the game

anyway:

recognized the will be an under 20 wc this summer and the germans are qualified. piss easy group, expecting 20 goals in the group stage for us, i mean Fidschi, Uzbekistan and Honduras :fl:

Surpsied Ibe wasn't called up. Redmond is the only true wide player in there.

Seems to be a recent thing with England U21 squads and having a lack of wingers.

Overall though a very good squad. Definitely going to be more interesting following them next week than the seniors.

I'm going to the Lithuania game on Friday night and then to see the u21's at Middlesbrough on the following Monday.

One player I'm particularly looking forward to seeing is Will Hughes. He's always impressed me everytime I've watched him on the box.

Yeah that was a rant.He did have some good points though. If Ince can't be arsed to play for the under 21s then he should not be selected for the senior team in the future.

Wonder how much influence Tom's dad had in Tom's decision to pull out of the squad.

Southgate said: "I have told Tom and Paul they need to be aware of the possible consequences of this decision in terms of how it would appear from the outside. I think they understand that."

"I have had discussions with Tom and his dad over the last week or so and the message from both was exactly the same. I have to say I was surprised. It was not something we’d been conscious of previously and it is for Tom to explain his full reasons."

Ince is 23 and played a lot of Under-21 football. I think it's perfectly plausible that he thinks he's got all he can from that level and would benefit from a summer off. People will criticise him but you can guarantee come the start of the season there will be talk about a few in the squad being 'burnt out'.

It's not new for Southgate to pick a lack of wingers though. In the Toulon tournament last Summer his only two wingers were Redmond and Ince, and when they weren't fit / subbed out players were played slightly out of position instead.

Don't really know what the plan is with all those attacking options. Seems to be an overload in attacking minded midfielders that aren't out and out wingers!

Nathaniel Chalobah got injured on Monday and misses Reading's game today, so not sure how likely he is to play for the U21s now. Might force Southgate to go even more attacking as there isn't a natural replacement for in the squad.

Don't think it has been mentioned yet, but the U19s are playing three games next week too. A very heavily Chelsea based squad, based on their recent Youth Cup successes.

Goalkeepers: Gunn (Man City), Woodman (Newcastle)

Defenders: Aina (Chelsea), Galloway (Everton), Smith-Brown (Man City), Chilwell (Leicester), Dickie (Reading), Gomez (Charlton)

Midfielders: Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), Winks (Tottenham), Colkett (Chelsea), Kuhl (Reading), Cook (Leeds)

Forwards: Fewster (Middlesbrough), Roberts (Fulham), Kiwomya (Barnsley/Chelsea), Brown (Chelsea), Gray (Birmingham)

Was a few injuries, especially in midfield.

Losing Barker to injury is a shame, one of our best players at that level.

Callum Wilson and Patrick Bamford pull out through injury, so who do they pick instead? Cauley Woodrow???

Benik Afobe: 27 goals this season
Cauley Woodrow: 2 goals this season

Hmmm.......

Southgate again showing the country on how f'ing useless he is. At least we don't have to worry about injuries I suppose.

Well there are players who patently aren't interested, and he could be one of them. Wickham should probably be in there too but obviously can't be arsed. I bet Bamford, Berhaino and Wilson all playe for their clubs after the break. Bit of a piss take. Maybe they're scared of getting hammered.

He said in local paper he wasn't going to book any holidays this summer in hope that he would be selected. Not really sure where the logic in Southgate's decision making is to be honest.

Wilson came off in about the 85th minute on Saturday with ice strapped to his lower leg, something about his ankle or foot going following some injections to his knee. Might be real, might be fake for all I know. But it sounded like the sort of knock that would clear up in a week or two. Which is very convenient.

I wouldn't like to think of him intentionally pulling out of England duty, despite his importance to us in this run-in. Howe himself played for England U21s as a youngster in the late 90s and I seem to remember it being a big deal for him and the club at the time. As a club we don't get many players representing England and we're very proud of Baily Cargil and his U20s appearances, for example. As I say, it's awfully convenient though.

As for Bamford, he looked alright Saturday. Except he was wearing gloves, on a hot afternoon in Bournemouth. Weird fella.

Berahino got fast tracked to the senior side a few months a go before he was ready. He doesn't want to play at this level again.
