IT'S BACK, BITCHES!

For those who aren't familiar, here's the description from the previous thread.

For those who aren't familiar with it, here's a rundown. It was a weekly feature, firstly you nominate a band or artist that you think EVERYONE should be hearing. After a few days to a week of nominations, the nominations go to a poll. The winner of the poll is deemed Essential Listening for that week, and gets its own thread.

This week, it's Llama-Man's thread.

POP/R&B

Nominate your choices and I'll open the poll up this time next week!

I'm going to stay true to my reputation and throw someone a bit left-field in here.

Cosmo Jarvis

Cosmo is a multi-instrumentalist and film-maker from Newton Abbot, Devon. His music is varied and eclectic, he's most well known for his single about seafaring homosexuals, "Gay Pirates" which was backed heavily by Stephen Fry, and presumably Rocky Latic, a famous gay pirate.

And no, we're not related. He's much better looking than I am.

I don't get it.

For example, you're a big fan of Michael Jackson and you think he's deserving of the title "Essential Listening". You'd nominate him as I have nominated Cosmo Jarvis, giving a sample of his music and a little blurb about what he does and why he's deserving. After a week, I'll put up a poll, featuring everyone who's been nominated. Whoever wins the poll gets a thread made about them, where everyone can discuss their music, news, and thoughts. This feature ran for a long time on TFF.

Got it - thanks for explaining.

I got confused when you said "This week, it's Llama-Man's thread", that's all.

Oh, that's for "Look Out There Are Llamas", the artist formerly known as OTID who likes girly pop, haha.

For pop I nominate an obvious choice of the spice girls. If you're 26 and you don't know most of their songs then something went wrong with your childhood.

Thought I would be the only person on this entire forum who'd even heard of Cosmo Jarvis!

Saw his name at a local festival and had to go and have a listen, given his name. Turns out he's fucking awesome!

Dunno what counts as pop/R&B. If I were anal enough I'd separate music into pop vs. classical but thankfully I'm not that anal yet. Does this count?

Burial

If you like electronic music then you simply need to hear Burial. His identity has been secret until recent years as Burial values his music over anything else. Ever since his first album self-entitled Burial was released in 2006 people have constantly been left in awe at his diverse releases. Burial is a great album, however the album which introduced me to Burial was Untrue which was released in 2007. The album is widely regarded as one of the most important and best electronic albums ever released. It's hard to define Burial's style and it's very much a case of listening to decide for yourself. The guy has been on tracks with musical giants such as Four Tet and Thom Yorke. I know a lot of people on here and formerly TFF have raved about him in the past, but a lot of people haven't heard his music. The reason people should give Burial a listen is quite simple. If you appreciate great music, you need to have a listen.

I first heard of this amazing group in 2011 with the release of their fist album finest hour. There style is unique with blends of chillout, nu jazz, and experimental they have since gone on to release a further two albums which are just as fantastic. I havent seen many people mention them back on TFF or in general really but they are defiantly essential listening.

Seven nominations so far and only two obvious choices. Going good so far! Get more nominations in if you want your choices to be involved. I think I might start the poll tomorrow night as I won't be around Thursday or Friday.

Are we meant to be choosing obscure stuff?

It's for anything really, we generally had popular artists before but I'm liking the obscure choices so far.

Oh yeah, I forgot it's the second iteration of this - I'm guessing a lot of the big boys were nominated first time around.

Yeah, mostly Beatles, Smiths, Primal Scream etc. There was a heavy bias towards bands and rock which is something I was hoping to balance out this time.

Yeah I regret my choice now. RnB and Pop aren't my strong point but I could probably have come up with something better than I did.

Oh okay thanks Jarvis. In that case after a bit of thinking I nominate Westlife.....

Joking of course. After a proper think I am going to nominate Bristol Band Laid Blak. I know they are more reggae but I would say there music fits here after looking at the other genres. My girlfriend loves them and I've seen them a couple of times live which was enjoyable. They are high energy and love their home city of Bristol which is always nice. This is probably the my personal one of my favourite song from their album which came out a couple of years ago. They also released a unplugged CD last year which is really good too. If you want to here more of Laid Blak then give them your vote!
