Hi,

I plan a trip for a bunch of lads every year and this year we want to go to a random non league match. We are from Newcastle and would like it to be reachable by train so down past the York/Leeds route.

Also, would be good if it was pure grassroots, stadium drink friendly etc.

Can anyone recommend a club?

Thanks.

End of August, beginning of September time. I know fixtures won’t be released for a while but just looking for recommendations.

I'd consider Matlock. Great ground/settings, decent town centre, couple of good curry houses & close to Chesterfield and Derby if you wanted to go somewhere livelier at night.

Probably get the train to Chesterfield and taxi/bus it (15 mins) rather than going on the train (it will take you to Derby to change then back towards Matlock)

I try and go 2/3 times a season and always enjoy it.

Agree with Spire, Matlock or Buxton both have ample pubs places to eat, obviously Buxton further West but amazing views.

Thanks for this, certainly looks like a contender. So you would recommend getting the train direct to chesterfield rather than derby?

Probably. It’s a bit of a fuck about going half an hour in The wrong direction, to wait in Derby for a connection then get a local stopping train to Matlock. Although it does call at Belper, Cromford, Matlock Bath all of which are decent pit stops for a beer.
I’d get off in Chesterfield wonder into the Town centre and get a cab from A-Line which is opposite Rutland pub by the Crooked Spire. It’ll be about £15 per 4 seater and take 15 or so minutes
Don’t live in Chesterfield anymore but was back over Christmas and the town centre has improved a lot in terms of pubs and places to eat out etc if you’ve got an hour or two spare

I'm gonna jump on this, can someone find me one too please?

On a permanent basis though.

Sounds like Halifax is the best bet location-wise, if you want the full Non-League experience.

Chester. Nice city, and quite local to you

Sure, here's the authentic Non League Experience, brought to you from The Shay Stadium. :bdick:
Thanks for your suggestion:

You must have found it hard work supporting both teams that day.

Belper is also worth a visit if they're at home and Matlock aren't. I was there for the black pudding contest against Chorley around 15 years ago.

I'll endorse Matlock too.

Not a supporter of Chorley sunshine, just an admirer of a club who've actually earned their success the right way, the way clubs used to earn it back in the days when football was REAL and played by REAL footballers playing for REAL football clubs.

Thanks for dropping by. :ds:
