So does anyone think we will meet LS before the end of this series? Brotherhood without banners is becoming more prominent now

I was disappointed with the length of time McShane was in it, a bit of a waste for an actor of his quality.

Overall an episode by numbers without much happening. Slowly building up to the usual big series finale.

I've always said it'll be the thing to close the season. At least close an episode. But my guess is the season.

I'm 99% certain it won't happen this season and maybe 80% sure it won't happen at all. Jon Snow, Benjen and The Hound all (sort of) back from the dead? I don't think they'd add a fourth, certainly not in season six at least, it's on the brink of farce as it is.

I don't see it as nihilistic, it's a fair reflection of this universe and ours in that you can't be good without first being strong, or else having someone strong to protect you. The Hound is that someone. I interpret this as him finding his new purpose in life. This world is full of killers that the weak can't counter for themselves, but another killer (like him) could.

Meeting force with force exclusively becomes boring and Martin explores the idea of moving past that rubric in a couple of the books, implicitly at least. Danaerys' adventures in Meereen, for example, were meant to serve as a sort of learning curve for the young queen, but Martin and/or the showrunners still see her as a warrior-monarch in the Rob/Stannis/Doran mould, so where is the incentive to keep watching in the long term?

So the same link as quite literally a post above! I know Ian has been cunningly deceptive in his disguise of his link, but it is indeed there.

The trailer for next week's episode might be more entertaining that this weeks episode in it's entirety.

This season has begun to stall a little.

It had its moments but still think this series has been poor compared with the earlier ones.

I never realised the Hound was Scottish before this episode though so things have moved on.

That was brilliant. No way they're topping that next week.

I hadn't really taken much notice of the girlpower criticisms before, but when you look at it, basically every storyline really does just revolve around hapless male characters being saved or mugged off by stronger female characters. The battle of the bastards was really well shot, but I hate it when they make protagonists act like idiots just to give the villain the upper hand. The show really hasn't done a very good job of showing why Jon's a great leader other than being righteous, which in this show should have seen him killed by now. Then again, I suppose it did...

edit: in fact on reflection that initial part of the battle of Winterfell is probably one of the best medieval battle scenes that has ever been filmed. It's like to medieval battle scenes what the beach scene in Saving Private Ryan was to WWII films.

also...

Sansa wasn't present when Ramsey mentioned starving his dogs for seven days, she'd already rode off on her horse.

I think it suits Jon's character quite well. He's always been a little naive. Doesn't appear to be learning too quickly though.

My one gripe was

The piles of bodies. Just felt really implausible that they would pile up like that.

Excellent episode

Did Rickon never think that running in a straight line was maybe not the best idea...?

Sansa is very clearly pregnant!
Cracking episode. Mourning the loss of WunWun though

Ditto. Sansa warned him about Ramsey and his games, and Ramsey knew his thing with Rickon would draw him out and destroy any battle plans he had. Yes Jon is a leader, but he also has too much heart sometimes and that gets him into trouble.

Not really. Even the really uber strong female characters like Daenerys and Brienne have had their moments where they have screwed up and needed back up. Then there are the likes of Cersei, Margery etc who wield a hell of a lot of power in their position, but ultimately have no power whatsoever. And then there's Catelyn, who basically made a succession of bad calls which ended in the Red Wedding! Sansa has gone through one hell of an arc to reach this point in the storyline. Yes, she's had her moment right now, but considering she's basically spent the first 5 seasons being passed around as some kind of trophy wife pawn who's only real use is her name, and has mostly been tortured by the likes of Joffrey, Cersei, Ramsey etc it's about time she had a little win really.

Considering this is a world where women have no real power at all (highlighted quite nicely in the Ironborn scene where it is pointed out that neither the Iron Islands or Westeros have ever had a queen) 'girl power' wins are quite few and far between. Most of them provided by Daenerys. And she's got dragons, superpowers and an army dammit!

I should have clarified I was referring specifically to this season.

we also now know from hints on the last 2 episodes that there will be a 'big bang' finish

its a shame we have to be spoon fed the information and not work it out breaking bad style though

Bit annoyed at how that episode ended.
Essentially the whole 'north remembers' thing was for nothing, like one or two houses vouched for them.
Instead we got
Baelish the White and the riders of Rohan riding in to save the day , the same thing that happened in Battle of the Blackwater and Stannis at the wall. I wasn't surprised by it but was really hoping for something else. Also Ramsey decides to shoot WunWun instead of Jon
