Thought I'd start a new thread instead of hijacking the Wrexham gary mills one.

Quite a few people saying it's a done deal and only a matter of time until it's announced. Don't really know much about him other than who he has managed and his record doesn't look too bad.

Anyone on here give us some more insight?

Won't be pretty.

He applied for the job here before he ended up at Southport.

Knows the Conference, although also played at higher level (highly regarded by Hull fans from Div 4 days).

Succeeded Jimmy Quinn to manage us for a full season in 2008/2009, getting to the play-offs and winning Conference Manager of the Year. Fell out with the board (probably over funding but he was a stubborn **** who epitomised the fighty scouser stereotype) and left in July 2009. No real warm feelings or regrets from the fans when he went - probably because of the second successive Wembley f**k up. Luton lot can tell you how he worked his way in and up with them to succeed Richard Money before following a similar trajectory.

Big mates with Paul Carden, hence their link ups at Cambridge, Luton and Southport. Hard nut. Useful night club bouncer. Must have matured and progressed over the last 5 years to get the Everton job - although I can see him hitting it off on a personal level with Big Dunc Ferguson and David Unsworth.

Apply for the Wrexham job last 3 times its been up for grabs, not got close once, Considering how poor our last few managers have been it just shows how lowly we rate him. If it's true Brabin is your new manager, get used to the conference you'll be here a while

Was it Brabin that grabbed a player by the throat on the pitch (Luton player when he was manager there?).

Remember when he was warming down after playing for Doncaster ( if my memory serves me right). We had a bit of 'banter' with him, enjoyed it,but he looked hard as fook.

I don't really think he's that bad a manager when you consider some of the clowns who seem to get appointed down here. Still, to go from trying to get Mills to hiring Brabin is a huge step down.

I'm not being funny, but there's nothing in that clip. It's handbags at best. He seems to have a decent record for getting to the playoffs, and although he's failed to get promoted, I can't imagine people being too put off by 'a hard man' round here but if it does spill over too often then it's obviously a concern. Anyone's a risk and to be fair, we've lacked that fighting spirit for about 2 years.

He played for us. Signed him for £100,000 from Doncaster in 1996, got sent off on his debut, played four more times and got sold (for a profit!) to Blackpool.

He was awful.

He's probably the best known L1/L2 player in history, always the only opposition player I remember. was the biggest nut-job thug in Lower FL history I'd say and by a long long distance.

not the sort of guy I'd like to play for if I were able to actually play.

Surprised that a club of Tranmeres size have not gone for someone either A) who has experience of getting out of the league B) someone who isnt a bellend

Surely he can't have been worse than Guy Branston? He was an absolute thug. I've got to be honest, I don't remember Brabin's playing days but if any team needed a leader like that at the minute it's us. I'm pretty wary about it and if it was to be Brabin, I'd give him time before making judgements about our chances. I have to say though, I get less confident every day - it's slowly starting to hit me now just how difficult next season could be.

This season we've had one manager who wasn't a bellend and then another with experience of getting teams promoted. Both of them were terrible. The season before we had Ronnie Moore who'd managed Rotherham through back to back promotions, yet he took us to the verge of relegation before he was sacked.

I'm going to keep an open mind, surely it can't get any worse than it has been the last two years?

Unfortunately it can. It's perfectly possible for your club to reach new lows, lows that you wouldn't have been able to conceive of a few months ago.
Guy Branston was pretty much Gary Brabin's successor on the playing field..

Don't be so sure about it not getting worse! It may get worse before it gets better. Maybe you will be lucky and do well but clubs generally get relegated to the conference for a reason and it might be that you will need to restructure and get a handle on the large drop in income before you are able to challenge again.

The only clubs which tend to challenge straight away are those with very large fanbases (Luton, Bristol Rovers) or those that have owners prepared to subsidise their clubs to a very large extent and bankroll a promotion push.

Er ahem...
I think with us, we were not in a terrible shape when we got relegated and once we got the right manager in we were ready to challenge, with our budget being among the top 6th -8th in the division..

Brabin used to love showing off his stomach for some reason as if the fans were scared of his toned midget midriff! He had no neck, couldn't play football, and just used to run around chasing anything he could kick.

Branston at least seemed to be a nutter but was never really a dick towards the fans that I remember, played along with the panto villain role more than just being a prick.

I jjust meant his on field stuff, he may be the right manager for you in the end, its hard to say as he's had a mixed bag of success and failure so could be anything really.

If there is a positive he knows the conference which has to help, your not going to dive in just expecting to do it all in some fancy higher league approach then suddenly find out its a dogfight to get out of it.

but I am saying nowt on managers you appoint, you go and appoint the man with the best L2 record in history and he takes you down.....shows no choice can be a certain correct one.

I am sure your budget was much higher than 6th to 8th! But no denying you've done really well to get back so quickly.

The last sentence was more said in hope. Obviously it could get a lot worse but with two successive relegations, betting/match fixing scandals and an extremely unambitious previous owner intent on managing a decline through the leagues, surely we're due a bit of luck and a turnaround soon? Although now that I've typed that I realise it's probably a sentiment shared by all the other ex-league clubs stuck in this elephants graveyard!

Well I'm pretty sure Eastleigh, FGR, Bristol Rovers and Grimsby's budgets were all bigger than ours. Ours was probably at a similar level to yours and Gateshead's.

Don't go thinking you've bottomed out yet; the Conference will be an eye opener for you.

It is for every former long standing league club.

I suspect we are a special case as we had 5 years of expecting the drop and were therefore better prepared than most. All our players had wage drops built in, virtually all had one year contracts with the club having the option to extend if the club chose. It saved us from some of the issues that clubs like Torquay had this time and we had last time where you struggle to strengthen\replace because existing players are eating up the wage budget.
We certainly cut everything to the bare bone this season to ensure a decent first eleven.
