Thought it deserved its own thread tbh.

Spent a lot of time playing this tonight, and it is genuinely one of the most enjoyable games I have played in ages. Eventually it will be free to play, but atm costs £14. I joined the a server, and spent about 30 minutes going through the wilderness, gathering basic supplies and eventually coming to a few houses here and there. Found a bit more, then it started getting dark. Managed to run away from a bear, and met up with 3 other guys. We stuck together for the past 4 hrs, collecting resources, guns, etc. Unfortunately I got killed by some bastard with a shotgun, but the amount of tension in it is huge. Anyone else got this?

I've not got it yet but it sounds very much like Day Z from what I've heard.

Yes, some similarities obviously, but in my view it is far better already. In the past week there have been 3+ patches, updates constantly coming in. The game in its current state is fun and exciting. DayZ isn't.

Not got it, but seen KYR_Sp33dy and 'the crew' play it and it does look fun if you can get a few guys together.

I have joined some random "clan", we have a proper base going, lots of weapons. Fun as hell. Got raided yesterday and had to flee into the forests and rebuild.

My Steam buddy said, despite all their "f2p for teh gammerz" talk H1Z1 is in fact another pay to win cash grab. Is he wrong?

I really don't think it is. It is in EA at the moment, so you need to pay to play. The "pay to win" bit of it is when you can pay for an airdrop for around $5. It occasionally (10%) of the time drops a gun with ammo, but usually just the normal stuff. It drops some distance away from where you buy it, can only be bought on a server with a higher population, and many times the buyer doesn't receive the contents. It is more pay for an event, than pay for gear.

I see. So the short version of that is "he's talking bollocks". Cheers! I kept an eye on H1Z1 for a while after it was announced, and watched the twitch interview with the dev guy. It looked/looks really promising but I was never convinced they could achieve soemthing genuinely good on that scale (dude was talking about multiple cities and states etc.), especially since it's gonna be f2p... think I'll keep up to date with the news from now on.

The main town is awesome, huge tower blocks, lots of buildings. Me and 5 random people got stuck together up in the top of one of these residential tower blocks when 4 guys came with shotguns. After about 10 minutes, they stormed it and murdered us- us hiding in the bathroom didn't work.

Well, like a sucker I re-bought it and I'm enjoying it a bit more now. I've only got about 5-6 hours out of it so far but I play with a couple of friends and we have a base up in the mountain that we're working on. It's sort of what DayZ should have been as it feels like you do need to forage for stuff. We make a couple of trips down to the closest town every hour or two for supplies to expand our base, and it genuinely feels atmospheric in the towns due to the mist and fog that descends upon it at night. I'd say it's currently in a better state that DayZ too, and considering H1Z1 is still only a few weeks old that's pretty impressive in and of itself.

One pretty nice feature they've implemented is the loot that zombies drop. Basically apparently how it works is, if a player in the town is killed by a zombie they get infected and after a short while turn in to zombies and roam the towns and wilderness with the loot that they were killed with on them. It makes killing zombies a worthwhile task, unlike DayZ where the game would be completely better off without them.

As for the pay to win aspect, I was a little apprehensive at first and it was actually one of the reasons why I got a refund in the first place, but I've barely seen it have an impact on the game. You still hear the occasional air drop but I don't think it gives players that much of an advantage, especially if it's true that they've reduced the chance for guns/ammo to spawn in the loot crates.

If I can get £15 worth of enjoyment out of it before it becomes F2P then I don't really mind spending money on an Early Access game, and it's certainly on track to do that.

Which server do you play on? On the London server atm, lone-wolfing, got full gear, about to build a base.

EDIT: Get as much loot as you can in the next few days before there is a patch, they are going to reduce the amount that is available.
