Disastrous appointment. Relegation is beginning to look like a real possibility at St James`

Fully expect Pardew & Palace to be above Newcastle following their game in three weeks...

Clearly were happy to let Pardew go without really thinking through who they wanted, or at least were thwarted in getting who they wanted.

Pardew has a load of critics, but wouldn't surprise me if he was some of the glue holding it all together. I also think that because his teams generally went through oscillating streaks of good and bad form, he got more stick than if his team that mixed them up a bit even if the resulting points totals were the same.

I know a couple of Newcastle fans who weren't unhappy he left, but I tend to think it's a case of be careful what you wish for...

That's what you get for forcing Pardew out.

Have you seen the state of Pardew's record?

Anyway, a terrible appointment by the club. I'm pretty certain Mike Ashley will be selling us in the summer to buy Rangers

It's still the fans fault, they expect too much.

Right?

In terms of league positions alone (given the variances of standards from Allardyce at West Ham, I know that's not the be all and end all), realistically Pardew did fine there. A lot of midtable teams aim for the mostly solid midtable finishes that Pardew's done - even if there's been the odd flirt with relegation, there was also the real push for CL football too which doesn't happen often for teams of a similar revenue stream/expenditure etc.

Of course, Carver could easily do the same as Pardew, lead them to midtable finishes again, and everyone's happy. But there is also the risk the bottom falls out.

It might just be me, but if I were a Newcastle fan I'm not sure I'd be too bothered by this. Relegation isn't likely, there are too many teams down there already, and if there isn't a suitable candidate at the minute, why not wait until summer to try and give yourself more options?

Yes mate, fabulously knowledgeable post. I'm sure we had to boot him out kicking and screaming when Palace came along to triple his wage packet. What a great post mate.

Spot on. We've gone from finishing mid table under Pardew (and still being lumbered with the inept clowns long term contract) to finishing mid table under Carver and more than likely replacing Pardew with a far superior manager in the summer.

Pardew might be a clown, but he's not inept. Under him you were a midtable team who generally finished midtable, haven't been in a proper full-on relegation dog fight and had one-time run at CL football too. There are very few midtable teams who've matched that stability in recent years.

The assumption a better manager will want to waltz in under Ashley in the summer with his reputation, could be ambitious thinking. Could well turn out alright don't get me wrong, but what's the realistic expectation? Finish midtable comfortably... just like Pardew team's did?

Newcastle's problem is Ashley not whoever the manager is. They're set up to finish midtable and ignore anything that may jeopardise that including, Europe and the domestic Cups.

Ashley seems to be getting more involved at Rangers these days, wouldn't be surprised to see him sell up in the summer. If that were to happen, the new guy then would be free to pick who he wanted as boss then without being lumbered with manager already on a long term deal

We very nearly went down 2 seasons ago. Putting aside any off-field issues I have with him (and I have a few)... he's never been able to bring any sort of consistency to the team on the pitch, aside from that one season we finished 5th (which was a great achievement, granted). And not just in terms of performances but team seletions and tactis too, the way we play. Too many times his tactics were more than questionable and his team selections downright baffling. He ostracised players who were in good form and failed to integrate new signings. And he threw the cup games every fucking season! He may not be as bad as I like to make out but I refuse to believe we couldn't attract someone who will get more out of the players than Pardew did.

We have no identity, no brand of football. We focus on countering other teams strengths rather than playing to our own. We're a negative, boring side and that's absolutely criminal given some of the talent we've had at the club over the last few years. Look what was happening to Cabella under Pardew for a recent example. And it's a shame 'cause the one season he did give us an identity and played to our strengths he got the best out of the players and we finished 5th, playing some great football along the way. It was a good time to part ways. We'd (higher ups included) had enough of him and he got a great offer from a former club. So he chose to go. Win-win.

The realistic expectation is a manager who can bring some consistency and tactical nous to the team, one who can identify the strengths of individual players and introduce a style of football based on those strengths. Something Pardew hasn't really done since the beginning of 2012. I'm confident we'll find someone better.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Going back to Pardew getting that big fat 8 year contract a while ago, it was such a marriage of convenience. Pardew given job security for life effectively, as long as he never got relegated he was safe as houses, while Ashley's cash is safe. But then Palace comes up, former club and a decent set up, and Pardew wants to go so off he trots. Where else was Ashley going to find someone who was going to come in under the same conditions, knowing full well they would be doing it on a tight budget and most likely have any stars sold from under him? Carver is in house and desperate for the job, I always expected him to be given the job at least until the summer. Ashley doesnt have to pay out any compo for a new manager, he's got someone from in-house who will be aware of the minimum restrictions and conditions placed on him, everybody wins. Except the fans of course.

Will be interesting to see if that changes in the summer.

If Carver finishes comfortably mid table and Ashley isn't selling Newcastle to buy Rangers. Carver will get the job long term

So I guess Rémi Garde isn't joining then.

Ah well.

Why not? Carver is only in charge until the end of the season.

It's all up in the air until the summer and certainly all depends on how we perform under Carver for the rest of the season. A few more results like the one against Hull last Saturday coupled with an eventual mid table finish will see Ashley hand him the job full-time. Whether or not that works for us in the long term only time will tell. I'm personally hoping that come the summer Ashley fixes his complete attention on Rangers permanently and subsequently sells us. Hopefully to a new owner who actually possesses ambitions for us that go beyond finishing mid table, staring at balanced spreadsheets, cashing in on our best players and knocking out replica shirts in a sports shop.

He's gotten more out of our main playmaker in 3 weeks than Pardew did in 6 months. It's a nice change seeing us play with a bit of confidence in our ability.

So I guess Rémi Garde isn't joining then.

Ah well.

He might do. Garde didn't want to leave mid way through a title run, just like Galtier didn't want to leave when he's on the brink of CL qualification.
