I've had my laptop for 5 years now, and it still works absolutely fine, other than the batter being completely shot.

For the last two years my laptop hasn't been able to run without being plugged in, which hasn't been a problem really because I just leave it plugged in whenever I use it. However recently the laptop has started to randomly turn off even when it is plugged in. I think there may be a problem with the connection from the charger to the laptop, because it literally just shuts down without any warning, but after a quick fiddle with the charger it turns back on and works fine.

With this in mind, I was thinking of getting a new battery so that my laptop no longer dies without connection to a power supply. Is it as simple as just buying a new battery and then swapping the old one out? Or is there anything more to it? And does anyone know if this sounds like it'll solve my problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A new battery would certainly help. Just google your laptop make and model number with battery in the search and you'll be able to get either a branded one or a compatible one.

However the problem with the charging port could be one of two things. It's either a problem with the connector itself which will need replacing by someone who knows what they're doing (Usually a new connector will get soldered on) or it's a problem with the charger itself and they only have a limited life too. Of course it could be both but usually that's a process of elimination. Do you have another machine you can try the charger on? Of course all these issues can be checked by a reputable PC/Laptop repair shop.

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately I don't have another machine to test the charger on. I'm not sure if this makes much difference, but when the machine dies, the power light is still on on the charger itself.

I think I might try a new battery, looking around online they don't appear to be too expensive. If that doesn't really help, there's a computer repair shop I've used before so I'll take it to them. Thanks again for the help.
