Regarding the thread title and the linked article, is there a difference between accepting gay people (as per the thread title) and accepting your own child being gay (as per the article)?

No problem with gays unless my child is one?

I'd imagine that is because of the high immigrant population in London, especially immigrants from Africa and the Middle East.

I always have a problem with surveys like this. One for the small sample size and another for how things are broken up.

London has over 10m people; a sample taken from the Bangladeshis of Tower Hamlet will differ massively from the sailor boys in SoHo and they're just a few miles apart.

Likewise, saying ''the North'' or ''Scotland''. I live within 2 miles of probably one of the leading gay districts in the country, and I nor many of my gay friends have reported anything even vaguely homophobic. Go 3 miles the other direction and take a sample from the overspill estates and the answer would probably not look the same.

I'd take this with a fairly significant pinch of salt. You have to be pretty wary about regional crossbreaks in polls. If the sample size is low then there's a very large margin of error. It would be interesting to see the full datasets.

I think London is also quite exceptional. It's a diverse, sprawling metropolis; a very gay-friendly city in a great many respects and home to a large LGBT community, but it's also got a disproportionately large migrant community, and we know that many within those communities possess very conservative values. Difficult to draw too many meaningful conclusions, I'd say.

Fair point. I had a friend from Libya and asked him how gays were treated there. His answer was that there were no gays in Libya.
