I'm still wondering how Mellon is the 2nd most successful manager in Tranmere's history? A couple of upgrades starting from amateur football and then a displacement from L1?
It is about context.

He dragged us out of non League football when we were in danger of becoming another Wrexham or Stockport, and back to back promotions are a big deal for any club.

No, he did not take us to a major final like John Aldridge, but I would say he is more highly regarded by our supporters.

Apparently Mark Cooper is featuring in the betting for the next Rovers boss. At least his appointment would satisfy those who think we need a whiny boss :)

Cooper is in last year of a five year contract so it is possible he and clubs are looking around for his next job offer.
His CV is a good one so expect a few chairmen will be looking at him. [He has had at least two good job offers last season]
But Coops is his own worst enemy, He does not stands fools lightly and can be very curt in interviews, especially if his team has lost.
The FGR supporters have never seen their team relegated and of late have had much success which has given them higher expectations than fans of other clubs who have suffered reversals. That is why they regularly lambaste him.
And of course he did not help himself in the early days by continuing to play his own son at the expense of perceived better players. Any manager who selects his own son is asking for grief.
But Coops was manager of the team that won at Wembley which included his own son. So he is not as daft as the fans would imply.
The home fans biggest grievance is that he does not acknowledge them. That is because he is so concentrated on his job he becomes unaware of his surroundings.

Having said all that I believe it best that Coops and FGR part company at the end of his contract next summer. Save him going stale and it would refresh the club.

FGR Stroud. Thanks for the full response. Cooper is a decent manager, but I’d be gobsmacked if he ended up at Tranmere, not least because relations between the two clubs have not been cordial, in particular with Mr Vince’s apparent glee at our demotion.

I suspect that be true but I will correct you on one point.
Dale V did not offer glee at Tranmere's demotion but did respond to antagonistic Tranmere supporters who were goading him on social media.
Against that is one Tranmere supporter who started goaded DV but ended up as one of his most vocal admirers. The guy started reading DV's blogs and realised he is one of the top environmentalists in the country who practised what he preaches.

Come to think about it, DV was one of the few EFL chairmen who wanted the season to be completed, same as Tranmere.

I’m unsure of the context but there was a remark cited on Tranmere forums from Mr Vince which read like he was bitter about our play-off. That did elicit some strong responses from Rovers fans. I can’t disagree with what you say as have not been following the argument closely.

Only a few years ago there was a comment from a Tranmere supporter:
"Where the F### is Forest Green?"
Since then both sets of supporters have got to know each other very well, having met twice in three years in play-offs.
The games between our two clubs is now one of the first we will all look for whenever the new fixture list is available.
After the Wembley final there was much admiration towards the Tranmere supporters who took their defeat with good grace. I always enjoy my trips to Prenton Park.
But of course both clubs have continually met during their successful seasons and chasing same goal, so it does affect attitudes. FGR now want to beat Tranmere as much as they do us.
I don't know exact words DV used but I suspect he was disappointed after FGR's play-off defeat, which can only be expected. Perhaps they were taken out of context - I don't know, but I do know DV is genuine and would not wish ill on another club.

Go on then, admit it, who thought that the Tranmere/FGR rivalry would dwarf all others in L2 next season?

I don't think anybody would go as far as saying that.
But for two teams who had never met before this decade, it has developed almost as much rivalry as ElGlosico where similarly FGR had not regularly met Cheltenham for nearly a century.

Tranmere biggest rivalry being FGR must hurt a little bit.

I actually forgot about all that the other season, something to look forward to on here!

It’s an improvement on being in the NL and having rivalries with Wrecsam and Chester!

In general probably notlob are probably our biggest recent historical rival. Off the pitch, those Forest Green fans I spoke to in the Trust tent before our first NL meeting seemed decent supporters.

Odd also that the game between Rovers and Cheltenham is referred to as El Glosico...when that term was first used to refer to an FA Cup 4QR match against Gloucester in the 14/15 season.

Well how many other individual match thread threads have gone to 23 pages on here?

This rivalry is clearly massive.

Btw regarding Coops, no chance he'll go to Tranmere. They won't pay compo or deal with Vince id imagine, quite a bit of bad blood between the boards after the play offs apparently and recently reignited by those twitter spats. :fl:

Quite a lot I imagine, especially ones with ‘Mansfield’ in the title!

And to be fair, it is all one way, you really don't register on our list of local rivals

Yes we do. You only have to take a look on your forums when some disaster befalls us.

I think Flitcroft would be a decent fit at Tranmere, will get you playing good football, players typically speak about him in a really good light (exceptions as with any manager obviously)

Problem is the bloke can go mental under pressure at the end of the season, if he’s improved on that you’ve got a good manager.

I know he was ultimately a failure, but on the plus side pre-christmas in his full season here that was the best style of football I’ve ever seen at the mill.

Used to be quite common, back in the halcyon days of this forum, for certain match threads to go on forever.

That is something I've noticed, the number of different contributors has dramatically dropped in the past few years.
I suppose with many alternate ways of voicing an opinion such as Twitter the forum's decline from most popular is inevitable.
Shame.

Both our NL and L2 promotions were via the play-off finals and cutting it fine. Although Mansfield were one of the best footballing L2 opponents during the previous season, it doesn’t sound like Flitcroft will be temperamentally suited to the Rovers job.

Like conker says he did have us playing great football and it really split the fans in 2 over whether to keep him or not, I fell on the side to get rid of him and whereas I stick with the decision and believe it was right at the time - I do wonder what could have happened last season.

I think if he had a decent assistant with him - he always had ben futcher and whereas he wasn’t bad I don’t think he was the experienced voice I believed flitcroft needed/needs. Maybe that could be the difference between him getting over the line, as it’s like he’s scared of the last quarter of the season.

David Dunn now confirmed as Barrow manager. Finally we can start to think about next season as we've been in limbo since March.

Some speculation that ex-Leicester manager and well-traveled assistant Rob Kelly will be joining him, which should provide the experience.
