I love Mrs Browns Boys, but hate Miranda and Derek - which probably makes me a minority on this forum for the first part of that sentence anyway!

Peep Show and the Office are both great as well. Love all the old stuff also, Open All Hours, Only Fools, On The Buses etc.

Doubt there's a worse comedy on tv right now than Citizen Khan, just dire and no laughs.

New Girl is pretty good, the first series especially

Seinfeld is my favourite sitcom. It really should have been bigger over here than it was. I've got Fraiser and quite a lot of Curb Your Enthusiasm here at home but not watched them yet

Derek was an ok watch in the first series but became almost unwatchable after Karl left. Wasn't there a Christmas special this year? I couldn't even be bothered to check it out.

If you like Seinfeld (and I love it) you'll like Curb since its essentially the same show for the most part.

Frasier is brilliant too (the pilot is a masterpiece) till the last few seasons when the magic seemed to ebb out of it and Daphne's family got more involved and everything became a bit more serious. The majority of it is excellent though and it definitely is worth watching if you like intelligent sitcoms (like Seinfeld too).

Curb Your Enthusiasm is brilliant. It can get quite predictable once you've seen a lot of them but it's always hilarious.

Seinfeld remains the best. As for british sitcoms loved The office, Green wing, Peep Show, Father Ted, I'm Alan Partridge.

Agree about Frasier. Brilliant until Daphne gets fat (the actress becomes pregnant) and then pretty average until the final season when it picks up again.

Yeah, that and when her mum and family come over with their grating accents, and also Niles becoming too serious after he leaves Maris. The majority of it is still a joy though.

Must be very very tough to keep a top programme going in America when their series are like 22-24 episodes long

i know they do shorter episodes but to keep it going and going and going must take some writing.

I'm a big fan of sitcoms, but i do like the old ones, any really from Dads Army, to Allo Allo to He-di-Hi, Ain't half hot mum, Are you being served, On the buses etc, etc can watch any of them.

pretty much whack on an episode before i go to bed each night, just a shame Gold has sort've ruined Fawlty Towers and Only Fools by replaying them so many times i struggle to watch either now

American sitcoms have large teams of writers, whilst British sitcoms tend to be written by Ricky Gervais.

Rob Delaney is great and I've been in love with Sharon Horgan for quite a long time, so I expect to love Catastrophe when I'm finally able to watch it.

I'm not a fan of Miranda, I think I've only seen one or two bits of episodes, but I think gentler sitcoms like that and My Family have a place.

After much deliberation and consideration I think my favourite sitcom of all time is Allo Allo.

Mrs Browns Boys is one of the worst things I've seen, closely followed by Miranda!

I genuinely don't understand how any adult human being enjoys Miranda Hart's comedy. Fucking awful. Curb is the best, followed by Arrested Development, though I really ought to watch Seinfeld.

Showing my age I know, and nostalgia may also play a part.......but has there been a better decade for comedy than the 70's?

Alf Garnet
Dad's Army
Love thy Neighbor
On the Buses
Some mothers do ave em
Porridge
etc etc etc etc

And Mind Your Language! which doesn't have an exclamation mark, but really should.

That's the point I was making though, there were so many - Up Pompeii being another one. Not just the sitcoms either, Morecambe & Wise, the Two Ronnies, Dick Emery, Dave Allen. Just a great decade for comedy. (And none of this political correctness bollocks!)

Yeah you should mate, you won't regret it. The first few episodes of season 1 are a bit ropey, but the episode where I started to like it was called The Pony (anyone who's seen Seinfeld will know it well), and that's where I felt it took off and after that for about seven series, it went from strength to strength. Curb is like a bit more of an adult version of Seinfeld, though the latter definitely never shyed away from controversial moments. And George Costanza is the best American sitcom character of all time hands down.

Yep, TBH the first season is ropey, plus its 25+ years old and since then there's been a whole host of copycat shows created which has diluted the impact of that show especially if you are seeing it for the first time, still great though.

Every character is brilliant in it too though and even the lesser characters "Helloooo Newmannnnnnn!" to George's mum and dad and Kramer's lawyer, are welcome additions. Even today, I'd say well over 90% of the episodes are still superb to watch.
