Wouldn't be TFF or its reincarnation without this thread, though without Stanley to parrot the propaganda and BS from the Israeli side, it might be slightly one sided.

That being said, tension between Israel and Hezbollah is at boiling point after Israel carried out a missile strike on Syrian territory, killing a Iranian general.

Another lebanese war on the horizon?

Reading diplomatic telegrams over recent months it seems Abbas is having a nightmare. Stuck between a rock (Hamas) and a hard place (Netanyahu). He got an extraordinary amount of grief for visiting Paris having failed to visit Gaza a few weeks earlier.

Not particularly optimistic at the moment, I have to say.

I think Abbas is a little screwed whatever he does. If he goes somewhere and stands up for peace, they say simply that he has funded terrorism in the past, and it is hypocrisy. If he doesn't bother, he gets slated and accused of wanting war.

Netanyahu has just called for a 'broad based assault on Islam'.
And people say it is the Palestinians blocking peace in the region.

As many as 4 Israeli soldiers dead after Hezbollah attacked an APC on the border. Israel has responded with Artillery fire. War on the horizon?

I'm sure Israel's response will be proportionate. I'm sure they won't deliberately hurt the Lebanese people.

However, I think this time I don't think there'll be an escalation as neither side will particularly want one. The Israeli public definitely don't want another conflict so soon after their onslaught on Gaza and Hizbollah aren't in a position to replenish their weaponry because of the situation in Syria and Israeli air superiority, not to mention that Hizbollah are heavily involved in aiding the Bashar Assad regime in Syria.

The US Administration are absolutely furious, apparently. General consensus is that a good deal for all can be done with Iran, but Netanyahu is using this as an excuse to grandstand in order to boost his election chances. Incredibly selfish if you buy that interpretation.

Netanyahu just wants the current situation everywhere in the Middle East to remain the same. Any warming of relations with Iran would be detrimental to Istael, according to his worldview.

Avigdor Lieberman, the Moldovan nightclub bouncer Foreign Minister has been chummy with Putin for some time.
And Israel has said very little about Russia's actions in the Crimea or Ukraine.

There is no argument that Israel are "heavy handed" when dealing with their neighbours, but there can be no doubt that if they were weak Israel would be wiped off the map.

Can't blame them for looking after themselves.

It's a bit of a non-sequitur as Israel has always been militarily stronger than its neighbours combined, even in 1948.
Also, the Arab states have never actually seriously tried to inflict a major military defeat on Israel and there has always been a trend among many Arab rulers to accommodate Zionist leaders and then Israel starting with Prince Feisal in 1919 and continuing with Jordan's King Abdullah in 1948.

Maybe.
But Jews have been persecuted throughout history, and I have no doubt that if a Country, such as Iran, had the nuclear capability - and the free rein to use it - Israel would be gone.

It may be distasteful, and maybe they don't help themselves at times with some of their actions, but Israel flexing their muscle prevents this.

True, Jews have been persecuted throughout history but this has primarily been by Christian European countries, not Muslim ones.
Personally I feel affronted when Netanyahu says that he represents the Jewish population of the world. Frankly he doesn't, he's the Prime Minister of Israel and I didn't have the opportunity to vote against his party as I am a citizen of the UK and I have full rights as a UK citizen.

This notion of Israel as a safe haven for the World's Jewish population is ludicrous. Through its establishment and the forced expulsion of another people to facilitate that establishment, it has aroused considerable ire and hatred - which shows that it isn't a safe haven as well.
The point about Iran is ludicrous as well. Iran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty (while Israel isn't and has never declared it nuclear weaponry). Hypocrisy much? Also, Iran has the second largest Jewish community in the Middle East after Israel and their rights as a community are protected by the Iranian constitution.

The Iranian regime care about wiping out Israel probably about as much as Putin cares about 'homosexual propaganda'.
