Keep it at the top, but have a separate Shoutbox at the bottom for Bottega Don.

Move it.
The forum would be aesthetically improved if the box was moved to the bottom. Also when impressionable young people who might sign-up land on the home page they aren't greeted with delinquents slinging the C word around.
Agree. poor design. Move to bottom. I rarely read it, never go in, so its presence is just an unnecessary step to getting down to the forum menu when I go to the home page. My point of entry is always the L2 thread, not the home page. If I ever felt the need of it, it wouldn't be the first thing I needed to see on the home page.

The forum's all about the New Posts tab anyway, isn't it? As long as the shoutbox doesn't appear on that page, I'm fine as things are.

I don't really get the need for a shoutbox on a perfectly good forum.

I love the shoutbox, though I don't use it often.

A place for random conversations without having to clog up threads etc.

Hence its necessity here.

I think the shoutbox is a massive part of this forum. It really makes this forum what it is. I personally think it brings members of the forums closer together and creates a community. If members don't want to use it then that's fine, just don't use it. I certainly wouldn't be as active on this forum if it wasn't for the shoutbox, I think a lot of people feel the same way. The shoutbox is the reason I branched out from just the L1 section and encouraged me to get involved in more stuff which has been great.

I think getting rid of the Shoutbox would just be a backwards step for this forum. Just look at the popularity of the shoutbox. From a business point of view, it is smart to get rid of something that is so popular? Is it worth potentially destroying the community here just to keep a few people who aren't forced to go into the shoutbox happy? It's obvious when you sign up to a forum you're going to experience some bad language and some things that aren't too nice, that's just the internet.

Irrespective of the outcome of this, it's not going to be removed. The 'removed completely' option would just mean you'd have to select 'Shoutbox' from the navigation - which is displayed at the top of each page. Those who wanted to use/view it could still do so within a couple of seconds of hitting the site.

I post in most sections and don't just stick in league one section, never even thought about using shoutbox ! Got nothing against people who like or want to use it but just don't see the point of it on a forum, general chat is also there for everyone to chat about everything.

Losing shoutbox would not destroy the community as you put it, bit of a over reaction lol

The only place a shoutbox really works is on non forum websites !
What about small discussions that don't particularly warrant there own thread? Shoutbox is perfect for stuff like that.

Make it available to site supporters only, as it was on TFF. Adds a nice incentive for people to actually stump up some money.

You had it easy first time round with getting people to sign up, but I would be surprised if a high percentage of those renew after a year, unless they have something like this to get out of it.

I prefer it at the top personally, as I will navigate onto the site and see people chatting in there and will use it for that reason, at the bottom is reasonable, but removing completely for me will probably mean I forget about the feature and therefore will barely use it. Whether that applies for others, I don't know.

Just to back up what TB says...

The Shoutbox ISN'T becoming a paid supporters only kind of thing. Rammy makes a good point, but the issue in hand is directly down to the content of the shoutbox - we have people who are paid supporters that don't like what they see at which point.

The Shoutbox ISN'T going to be totally removed from the site at all. AT VERY WORST it will sit under the 'shoutbox' tab on the menubar and not be shown on the home page.

Unless a landslide turn around occurs and it's decided by a huge contingent of the forum that they want it binning - (IN WHICH CASE IT GOES TO THE NAV BAR TAB) then we have the solution being worked on currently. A 'hide' button when you enter the forum as default, when you then use the website and click into the shoutbox as it is now, your settings will be saved. So if you want to use the shoutbox, you will sign in and see it as normal, if you are the polar opposite and don't want to see the shoutbox, it will be hidden.

There's really no need to worry on either end.

I'd be in favour of it being removed permanently.

Administration have got the right approach here. There's no need to get rid of it, its clearly valued by some members and not by others. Keep it but give people the option whether or not they see it.

Stay out of it Red. You've ruined one forum already.

Keep it and warn those who constantly use unnecessary language in the shoutbox to calm it down a little. Most of us on here are resonable enough - though I personally would like to see Stevencc banned - and think would comply with toning it down a little.

I'd prefer it to be removed from the home page and sequestered away in its own space. I've never particularly liked it, and I don't think having it as one of the first things a user sees when he/she logs on gives a very first good impression. I also agree with Rammy (God help me) that it ought to be some kind of perk of paid membership.

Still, the much more important point to make is this: much, much kudos to the Admin folk for actually communicating different options and putting the matter to a popular vote. Such a refreshing change from the TFF approach of snap Executive Decisions and being a bullying arse-hat to anyone with a dissenting point of view. Well done, lads.

Speaking of not making snap Executive Decisions without communication with the members, I noticed my reply to Saltire above has been censored. Is this a new feature?

I haven't done so but I'm quite glad that others have felt moved to complain. I've always harboured reservations about the shoutbox but I always felt that I could at least appreciate its appeal as a place for irreverent, though essentially good-natured, bantz. I find it altogether harder to find anything enjoyable about some of the casual racism, sexism and homophobia that increasingly seems to crop up there, nor the tedious exchanges in which the word "c***" crops up about a dozen times. Now, I'm not really fussed about bad language and I don't want this forum to be become particularly censorious but I can't imagine that any of these things are really going to do much to entice prospective new members to join. So yes, it ought to enjoy a less prominent position on the forum, but I think the culture of the box needs to change somewhat too because at the moment it's absolutely fine one minute, a huge great clusterfuck of awfulness the next, depending on which members are hanging out there. Needs to lose some of the nastiness in my very humble opinion.
