Just finished having a conversation with TB, who has enlightened me that we have received more complaints about the shoutbox. So we came to the decision that a community poll would be the best thing.

Do people want it at the top of the forum? Where it sets an impression, is amongst the first thing you see and read?

Would more people rather it was at the bottom of the forum where it was previously, out of the way and people can 'keep away' if they like?

Or would people like the shoutbox removing from the entire homepage all together? Regardless of position on the homepage, the 'shoutbox' is on the header nav bar so is quite easy to negotiate to with just a click of a button.

We will leave it up to the entire community.

Removing it would be so damaging to this forum, do not do that.

Putting at the top make so much more sense.

It would still be linked directly in the Navigation bar.

There's an argument that its actually costing us more than its helping at present. The content is questionable at the best of times and we're meant to be a site for 13's and up. Had a fair few people raise the issue to us since January. Nevertheless, will let this run its course.

An eventual Hide/Ignore feature will make this a lot simpler but until then this will have to do.

Definitely don't remove it, it's very important to the forum. If it has to be moved to the bottom of the homepage, I think that's fine, once people are used to the forum I doubt they regularly look at it that way anyway, just use the button at the top of the site. If it gets serious enough, you can just make it Supporters only which removes the issue about it costing the forum too much etc. Only as a last resort though obviously.

Lose a community that you've worked so hard to build or attract new members who aren't guaranteed to create as much activity as the members at present do?

You can ignore the shoutbox can't you?

Could you not make it so that only registered users can view the shoutbox and not guests?

Make it for site supporters only. First time visitors won't be able to see it all, and if people are that desperate to use it then the site gets some more money.

The issue has been raised by established members here, who contribute just as much as the shoutbox regs, to be honest!

Not at present. That's being worked on, though.

Guests cannot view it already. Member feedback has sparked the poll, not guests.

TB is looking into 'hiding' it as default, should 'top' come out on as the winner. So that anybody who signs up can't see the shoutbox itself but a button that says 'use shoutbox' etc. People who don't want to see the content of it, or use it, can hide it and it will keep those settings everytime you log in, so it would theoretically be almost like the shoutbox doesn't exist.

Which I think personally, would be best for it.

My take on it is as follows. The shoutbox is good for the site, it brings 'lurkers' and people who didn't post as much all together and allows people to get more actively involved throughout the forum. However, there is a line that needs drawing. Some of the stuff in there is very much NOT suitable for the vast majority of eyes and because of that, something does need putting in place - be that a hide button, an ignore feature or just ditching it to be on the navbar only.

Either way, it will be sorted out.

I was one of those who asked for an ignore option because it's so 'in your face'. I didn't have a problem when it was at the bottom of the page so reverting would probably make a few people happier. I wouldn't want it less accessible as I know that a lot of you enjoy using it.

Why not just properly clamp down on the stuff you're seeing complaints about (he says with no self-awareness)? I know you've 'warned' a couple of people about their conduct in there before, but follow through with stuff and people will stop. I know you don't want to go down the route of the TFF admin - and rightly so - with their approach by the end, but you are administrators of a website you want to become more successful eventually. I'd assume those who frequent the shoutbox often and are the reasons for the complaints would either a) be willing to tone down whatever it is people are finding questionable, or b) if that fails, properly warn them or ban them for a period.

I'm deeply, deeply offended by all the Liverpool fans on the forum, how many complaints do I have to make before they all get banned?

I certainly agree people should have the option to come on to the forum and not see it. Until the ignore feature comes, moving it to the bottom achieves that.

I'd say move it to the bottom and then move it back to the top later once people can ignore it. Would it even be possible to add a view at top/view at bottom option later alongside the ignore function? Maybe not worth it tbh.

Bear in mind also that your poll has split the votes for 'not showing it at the top'. The issue is really whether to keep it at the top, so while it's currently 6-7-7, it's more like 6-14 really innit.

When people start complaining about the content within the Shoutbox they're taking the internet too seriously.

Keep it at the top.

Don't do what Steady said, it doesn't need policing. Unless there is something completely over the top, which there rarely is, keep it as it is.

Maybe move it to the bottom until the option of showing or hiding it comes up.

Or as Veggie Legs said, make it site supporters only.

I questioned the initial Shoutbox move from the bottom of the forum to the top as 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Those who us it on a regular basis will scroll down and those who don't can use the site without the box being so 'in your face'.

TB is having a word with the chap that is helping on a few skin designs with us, with regards to the 'ignore feature' and he will be having a look at that later this evening before we reveal. 19 vs 7 currently, for the shoutbox to be binned entirely, which would be a big claw back (entirely plausible) so it will probably be a case of getting this feature added on and then whoever wants to see the shoutbox can, those that don't - won't.

If people don't like it don't read it. I read it most nights and I can count on 1 hand the amount of times something has really gone over the top.

Not surprised so many complaints have been launched, some of the answers to the quiz questions in the evening are scandalous, libellous and downright wrong (when they're given as right).

Time for a revolution.

The forum would be aesthetically improved if the box was moved to the bottom. Also when impressionable young people who might sign-up land on the home page they aren't greeted with delinquents slinging the C word around.

Is there a minimize, if not then adding that would be good for people that don't want to see it.
