Well it's not great, is it. 80 years ago or not.

Palace being 'disappointed' that it's been published is irrelevant.

Far be it from me to defend the Sun, but I think their focus is placed mainly on yer man Edward - a known Nazi sympathiser and fully-aware adult - engaging in said activity.

Yeah this is total bolox. It was taken long before people knew what was going to happen in Germany and apparently people around that time were doing the salute because it was funny.

People in the royal fammily and especially Edward were synpathetic towards Nazi ideology but the way the sun reported this was wrong IMO.

Can't even believe this has made the news. Happened way before anybody knew what Hitler was going to do and she was a kid for crying out loud.

She knew full well what she was doing. When I was six I knew it was wrong to make gestures linked to genocidal regimes. The only question is, why has it taken so long for this to come to light? It's been more than eighty years.

Family messes around in private family video, shocker.
We really need to get a grip. As a nation and as an entire fucking species, really.
6 year old does something she has no idea what it means and what probably meant less at the time. Still can't believe people pay to read the drivel in that paper.
I'm a republican, and I agree with both of these posts.

Remember Prince Harry and the Nazi fancy dress costume? I reckon the Sun are onto something here.

At the time the gesture wasn't even linked to genocidal regimes so you'd also have had to have been a psychic 6 year old, able to predict that a salute from the current Germany chancellor was going to become one. Such a ridiculous non-story. Even from it being anti-Edward as opposed to anti-Queen, at the time they did it it was not associated with the horror it is now synonymous with.

Wrong, I'm afraid. If you watch the film closely, you will see a small "I love North Korea" badge firmly fixed to the future Queen's electronic ankle tag. I'm with Smat. You don't get to be the Queen just by accident of birth. Duh! She knew what was going on.

If the film was made in the part of 1933 after Hitler became Chancellor then the subjugation of Jews and political opponents would have started, whether or not the royals knew this at the time I don't know.

The persecution would have been in its infancy with certainly no clue as to the horrors to come. Hitler became chancellor in January 1933 and dictator in March/April.

Could be making this next bit up but wasn't Hitler an 'ally' at one point to the British government? Or at least we supported his rise to power as we did Idi Amin? If I didn't just dream that up and it was part of GCSE History from years ago whenn did that end?

Regardless there's still a vast world of difference between being filmed making a Nazi salute in 1933 and supporting the Nazi rule we know from the following years.

Yes, the large scale atrocities weren't occurring then but they were violently rounding political opponents up. Hitler was very much interested in forging an alliance with Britain, but I think Britain was indifferent to Hitler at first.

It wouldn't have been that hard to be pro-National Socialism back then before people were exposed to the horrors of war and genocide. It was turning a country on it's knees into a world superpower after all.

I'm sure if any further family photos giving us some historical insight surface The Sun will give those front page news and a further six pages dedicated to them too.

I'd have found it difficult to be pro nsdap, a party that in the early days violently subjugated and banned any political parties. They also forced Jews and dissidents to undertake labour to get the country off its knees. For me there is many more objectionable aspect of Nazism than just war and genocide.
Kristallnacht had nothing to do with war or genocide, but it was a morally reprehensible event. You'd have supported that? The Nazis carried out all manner of reprehensible things long before the war and genocide started.

You mean a hypothetical time-travelling version of me? No, but I think it's easy to see how people of a different era might have. They'd have been raised on very different ideas about nationality and the state and equality.

She copied what her Mum & Uncle were doing, and both of them knew exactly what the salute meant, wasn't Auschwitz first built in the early to mid 30's?

So the queen is photographed doing a nazi salute, her grandson dresses up as a nazi and she married a racist. The evidence is stacking up.

Its a worthless story.

All it shows is a kid imitating what her Adult relative is doing...........probably happens everywhere around the world with different things.

but no doubt press will try and run this to death to get themselves afew copies sold.
