Still stalling it would seem, with some new reports saying he's waiting to see if we qualify for the CL again.

I hope we're not going to be held to ransom by Sterling in terms of money. I'd love to keep him but if his demands are silly we need to let him go and he can try his luck elsewhere, whilst making sure we get a good price whilst he still has 18 months left on his contract. He needs to realise he's at the perfect club for him and his development, and that he's far from the finished product. His wages need to reflect that. He's currently earning £30k a week and no one will argue that he's not worth more. But if the reports that he's demanding £150k a week are true (or his agent more accurately), then he needs to go elsewhere to get it, assuming he's able to.

Why is 150k deemed as excessive? Glen Johnson gets 110k at Liverpool.

What would you class as a fair amount for Sterling then?

Glen Johnson wouldn't have gotten such a ridiculous deal if the club's current guidelines had been in place at the time he signed it. As the old expression goes, two wrongs don't make a right. Thankfully Johnson is going this summer and good riddance.

As for what Sterling is worth, given the reasons stated in my first post, the £100k he's reported to have been offered looks good to me. No one is suggesting it has to be a long term thing. A 24 month extension could be good all round, for Sterling to develop further and then look at another increase in 2017.

stall the offer, who is able to pay him 150k? Chelsea. Liverpool, United and Arsenal. continental europe wouldnt sighn him at this price, you could get 12 better players for the same amount of money.

furthermore how many players of Sterlings kind were still useful after they were no teenies anymore.

What's Sterling's 'kind'? I've never seen a player like him. He's not a tricky winger, he can do almost everything.

If he is currently earning only 30k that is a crime! I would say around 100-120k is fine since he is arguably one of our best players this season. Just give the guy some of the Glen Johnson's money after he moves on. There will only be a problem if he keeps asking for another 40-50k raise every season.

I didn't know about this, now I'm actually concerned we might be interested.

If we could swap Theo plus £10-15m, I'd be thrilled. Walcott is a better finisher as of now, and his movement as a forward is much different to Sterling, but the Liverpool man's dribbling and close control is much improved on Theo. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sterling are England's future stars.

Don't think this will happen, though. I expect both to sign contracts to stay on at their respective clubs.

I would rather take the extra money than Theo Walcott.

It's a tricky one.

I kind of understand why Liverpool are reluctant to up their offer. Brendan Rodgers has been quoted a couple of times discussing his views on giving too much too soon to up and coming players, and to be fair you can see his point. 100k is more than most players dream of, so for Sterling to be earning that so early in his career is still highly impressive.

On the other hand, Sterling has been one of Liverpool's best performers over the last year, so why shouldn't he be rewarded with one of the best salaries at the club? If Sterling performs better than Steven Gerrard for example, shouldn't he be paid more, regardless of his age?

In the end, Liverpool have to decide what's more important - their wage structure or keeping high profile players. Make no mistake about it, Liverpool might be unwilling to break the bank for a 20 year old, but other teams have no such reservations and Sterling won't struggle at all to meet his wage demands elsewhere.

Agents/media at work. Liverpool would rather renege on a contractual agreement than sell an important player to us.

It will get sorted out in the summer and I expect he'll sign for around the £100k a week as offered. If he improves further after that in the next two years he'll get that £150k I expect and it would be deserved.

I don't think there is an effort on his part to engineer a way out of the club. He has a new agent is all and he is doing his best for his client to keep options open until the closed season.

If we offer Sterling 150k now, then the next time it's time to extend he'll be out of our budget and we'll have to sell, anyway.

We need to get him around 100-120k so that the 150-180k we offer next time around is a significant increase, because we won't be able to pay anyone the 200k+ a week he'd ask for if we give him 150k a week now.

Will Liverpool qualifying for the Champions League have any bearing on how much he's offered? I'm sure that's one factor he had in his mind when he decided to delay talks. Or at least, a thought his agent had in mind.

I wouldn't think so tbh. Yes FSG is trying to balance the books and not have anyone on scandalous wages a la Johnson, but the club knows how important Sterling has become and I'm sure they'd pay him the going rate if need be.

He'll sign after the end of the season for an amount which he's worth.

I hope we can keep him for a very long time but a contract will matter little in that apart from getting his transfer value up, and he's that good he'll end up at Barca, Real or Bayern anyway..

I can see him going straight into City's first XI on the right wing/right of an attacking midfield three. No chance he gets into the Bayern XI though.

Yeah if he is set on a big money move to become a super star, he has to go to a club where he'll play regularly. He wouldn't be getting the game time at Bayern/Real/Barca even if he steps it up further, though I think he would go into the lineup at City. Don't think Liverpool would sell him to an English rival though, so where does he go?

I could see both City and Chelsea being in for him, he'd walk into both sides. He's not good enough for Bayern/Real just yet and with the quality they have he wouldn't get in the team anyway.

I think Johnson's contribution to Liverpool FC is worth more than a good riddance.
