With Steve Clarke as his assistant. Good appointment.

Indeed... Happy with Clarke as assistant though, should take no shit.
Nah in all seriousness I think you've done well there. And as you say Clarke would offset concerns about Di Matteo being a bit of a nice guy

Might be in the minority but I think RDM is a solid appointment, can see him taking Villa back up at the first attempt.

Newcastle champions but Di Matteo/Clarke combo gives Villa a decent chance of challenging Norwich for the second automatic spot.:)

Slightly surprised Steve Clarke has accepted an assistant job in the Championship. Given his experience couldn't he have found a job in charge of someone at the same level?

Fair point.

And I suppose if it all goes tits up he can just blame it on his good mate Bobby.

He's hoping RDM gets sacked and he'll end up with the job.

Yeah, we tend to sack managers and assistants together (Black being the exception), although we obviously don't know how the new owner will do things.

Great appointment by Villa this.
Newcastle and Villa will bounce back and be in PL after the next season imho.

A good, solid appointment on the face of it. Like many jobs taken in the past few days, there's plenty more that needs sorting before you can shoehorn in educated predictions, it'll be an interesting summer to see how the likes of Villa, Newcastle and Norwich are going to line up come August.

Clarke sticking with what he knows best, as a number two. Proved here that he's still some way off being a good manager, still got things to learn.

Surprised he didn't hold out for a coaching job at Man United as I suspect Jose would have been happy to have him.

Still a solid appointment by Aston Villa, and they'll get the best of the Chelsea and Man Utd loanees now too!

Could be a good appointment for Villa but I'm not overly convinced and definitely don't think this will make them automatic promotion contenders, Clarke as no 2 is a really good decision though. Di Matteo has done nothing since his stint at Chelsea bar a piss poor few months in Germany, time will tell.

Both were unfairly sacked at Chelsea & West Brom I think. Happy with this, although Moyes was my first choice out of the names banded about.

Also, 2 Champions League winning managers in the Championship next season. :smug:

I think Di Matteo on his own would have struggled to get Villa out of a division as competitive and tough as the Championship but it is a shrewd move to take Steve Clarke as his assistant. They have plenty of hard work ahead of them but if they are wise with regards to players they bring in then there is no reason why they can't be competing in the top 6

I could have won the ECL with that Chelsea team not worried about this and don't think Aston Villa will be our biggest challengers for promotion.

When RDM took over they were trailing Napoli by 2 goals after the first leg with AVB in charge. They were highly rated at that time with Lavezzi, Cavani and Hamsik. Then there is all the other stuff during that campaign like playing against arguably the strongest club team ever in Barcelona that season, coming from behind against them with 10 men in the Nou Camp.

Sometimes a manager's past achievements don't mean all that much in how good they might be in the future jobs but that was a huge achievement.

People seem to be acting like they expect Newcastle to be favourites? I have them as most likely next Fulham, the tiny bits of talent they have will surely leave and then what do they have?

Good appointment this by Villa I believe, I mentioned him as an ideal target on a different site.

But Benitez is a strong factor for lots of people. It's a really good move to keep him at Newcastle on paper, however it'll be very tough.

Good appointment but they shouldn't expect promotion this season IMO. Overhauling that squad will take a few transfer windows and won't happen overnight

As long as he can bring back the Portsmouth/Spurs kinds of achievements rather than the Southampton/QPR ones, we're all good. And that flappy faced fuckwit can stay away from our club too.

Good, I think. I know Richardson was very unpopular with Villa fans, and I don't really know why N'Zogbia was in the squad the past year or two.

As for Di Matteo, I think that's probably a really good appointment for Villa, but people who are tipping them for an automatic spot should probably wait to see what their squad ends up looking like. As I understand it, Villa need to shift out dead wood that must total at least a dozen players.

Don't get me wrong mate, I can't see us coming back up automatically , maybe playoffs at best.
As for N'Zogbia, man was getting 65k a week for doing fuck all this season , great player when he's at the races, but he can fuck off now quite frankly , money obsessed prick.
