On Friday night, at a New York Stadium filled with 11,350 excited fans, and thousands more watching on the TV, Rotherham claimed the bragging rights in the Yorkshire derby against Leeds. Despite a dominant first half performance from the latter side, and a goal to their name, it was the former side who came out of the tunnel in the second half to put in the match winning performance and send the Leeds fans back to West Yorkshire with nothing to shout about.

Minutes before kick off, the atmosphere for the next 2 hours was palpable, with both sets of fans chanting at each other. And it was Rotherham who controlled possession for the first few minutes of the game, but with inconsistency with the ball, and a lack of chances, Leeds brought themselves back into the game. The first clear cut chance of the game came from a Leeds corner, the ball trickling over the onlooking players in the box, leaving Alex Mowatt to pick up the ball, skip pass Frazer Richardson and play in Antenucci, who had a chance easier to score than it was to miss, and put it wide. Soon after, Doukara sliced a low shot pass Adam Collin's goal with minimal fuss. This prompted an immediate response from Rotherham, as Alex Revell came out better in a clash for the ball, to play through Matt Derbyshire, who launched a pea roller straight at Marco Silvestri. And as it looked like the first half was trickling out to a stalemate, the visitors lifted the game. Doukara played a ball through the back line of the Rotherham defense, and Antenucci timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap, and from an acute angle, put the ball into the far corner of the goal. The momentum was with Leeds, and Rotherham were failing increasingly to keep hold of the ball. Chances came for Leeds on the counter attack, but with none being taken, the half time whistle went, with the score 1-0 to Leeds.
But the New York Stadium has never been a happy hunting ground for other Yorkshire clubs coming to take the points from Rotherham, and the Millers have had a mentality in which fans knew, this would not be the end of the game for them. Within the first 5 minutes of play, as Ryan Hall was swapped for Paul Taylor, the Millers dominated every corner of the field, giving Leeds minimal chances. And just shy of the hour mark, player of the year Lee Frecklington powered into the box, before punting the ball towards goal. The resultant shot was parried out, but only into the path of the outstretched Wembley hero Alex Revell, who beautifully curled an off balance shot into the corner. The number 9 charged towards the corner flag, everyone was on their feet in rejoice, they could feel it. But Leeds almost responded immediately, Doukara converted a hefty cross, but the linesman judged it to be offside. In a tactical change up front, Steve Evans replaced Matt Derbyshire with club record signing Jonson Clarke-Harris. And under 2 minutes later, the change proved to be a fruitful one. Clarke-Harris picked the ball up on the halfway line, and ran 20 yards, before lashing a wonderful shot at goal from outside the box, which curled away from Silvestri in the Leeds goal, The Millers led 2-1, and it was as if Leeds were nowhere to be seen. But the Millers had to work to hold on, Adryan for Leeds proved a very dangerous asset, and Collin came to the rescue numerous times as Leeds looked for the response. But it was not to be for Leeds, as Rotherham held on 2-1 to claim the 3 points, and the bragging rights in Yorkshire. Rotherham move level on points with Leeds, but sit behind them with 1 goal separating them.

It was a hard-earned victory against a football club I have got enormous respect for. We beat a football club with a tremendous history but this was our night.
Steve Evans - Rotherham manager
We had some problem in midfield from the pressure from them, but we made some good moves in the second half and their goalkeeper made some good saves.

Great review.

Enjoyed the game but was surprised Rotherham managed the full turnaround, probably deserved it on the second half performance.
