How can it not? What a guy.

It reminds me a little of the McClaren appointment. Easy option after a controversial figure and a complete non-entity. I also suspect it will end in a similar fashion (hopefully without the umbrella).

The least successful permanent manager England have ever hired?

Everyone else at least had some managerial success at club level, even McLaren looks like Guardiola compared to Southgates one job, one relegation, one sacking.

He is beating non permanent Stuart Pearce though, I'll give him that, even if his record with the U21s is much worse.

A coach (or for you brits: a manager) doesn't have to be a successful club coach before. We Germans have made good experiences with not so good club coaches who turned into good to very good coaches for the national team.

Maybe he, the one and only Gareth Southgate, will later be remembered as the most successful coach England has had besides Sir Alf Ramsey ...

It's supposed to be about sports news generally but for the next 3 or 4 hours all they'll go on about is this shite.

Turn it off then, simple.

Just the start of the usual bigging up the new England manager to stupid degrees. If they don't do that how can they shit on him when things start to go wrong?

Good luck Gareth, would love him to succeed. Yes the FA could have probably attracted a better foreign manager but the press would only slate him to death too, he didn't do a great job at Middlesbrough but international management is totally different and he's been in the set up for a few years now.

Fucking joke of an appointment. I wont be watching another England game. Astounding lack of ambition shown by the FA. Just another "Yes" man.

I don't know what the issue is really. Everyone wants the FA to show ambition but who can England attract? Money is the only factor to entice foreign managers and for the sort of calibre that people seemingly want can be offered that at big European clubs and actually have top level players to choose from.
Maybe we'll get Mourinho in when he gets booted from Man Utd and Southgate gets a 0-0 against someone and is pushed out.

Like President Trump is the logical conclusion to the marriage of populism with celebrity culture, so Southgate is the logical conclusion to the rise of the Premier League. England's national team has declined in importance - to the players, to the fans, and to the game itself - and this is the result. I don't have anything against Gareth Southgate but he literally might as well be Phil Neville. It gives me no pleasure to say that.

I still think we should have gone for Slaven Bilic.

Right, so they're just hiring the worst / least successful person they can find? Why Southgate then? Why not Terry Connor or Tim Sherwood?

Literally every current English premier league manager is more successful and a better shout - even Pardew.

Fair play to those that are being positive about this, from an outsider it is an utterly bizzare and awful appointment - like making Mike Tyson governor of the Bank of England.

Marcelo Bielsa is the obvious choice, and superior in every way to Southgate. Plenty other far better managers to Southgate out of work too.

It's not Eddie Howe, so I'm happy

Being Serious, I'd have been interested to ask Wenger if he fancied it as a part time job after this summer, but without knowing what his/Arsenal's plans are. If Wenger ends up leaving Arsenal this summer, yet we have Southgate as England manager for 4 years, then I think the FA will have fucked up. Or perhaps they did sound out Wenger and he told them to naff off. Guess we'll never know.

We've tried just about every style and background of manager in the last 15 years, has there been a firm conclusion to draw? E.g. Hodgson and Capello, not much between them was there.

I wasn't convinced Hodgson had full command of and buy-in from our highly paid big ego-ed squad. I'm unconvinced whether Southgate will do any better on that front. But I'm sure we'll breeze through to qualification as ever regardless, and there are more problems than simply who the manager is when it comes to our performance at tournaments.

tbh I don't give a shit about the Manager of the Three Lions (I like the english football leagues but not the national team)
I just pointed out that a coach/manager doesn't have to be successful before at club level to be a good coach/manager for the national team. Nothing more. It wasn't a pro Southgate judgement from me (as I said I don't care about who's manager of the England team) and if you look at the end of my posting you'll even find a  showing that I didn't mean my last sentence with Sir Alf Ramsey seriously.
