Thought I'd start a thread for this as I've just been to see "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time"
and it was brilliant. I really recommend
it if it's in your local area.

The story follows a 15-Year old boy who has aspergers syndrome and his complicated homelife with a father struggling to deal with the death of the boys Mum.

The stage was really put together and used cleverly to give an insight into what someone with Aspergers might experience. The actor who played the main character was excellent and the script also brilliant.

One of the best ones I've seen so far.

I saw 1984 at the Playhouse Theatre, London this week. It was 101 minute long assault of the senses, I've never seen anything like it before. The way they used the set, lighting and sound was indescribable really. It's a slightly different take on the story with some parts set in the 'present' (whenever that is) and Winston struggles with the time lapses which make you question whether it all happened. The Room 101 scene was also incredibly graphic.

One of the best things I have ever seen and would thoroughly recommend to anyone so long as you're not of a nervous disposition or epileptic!

I haven't been to see much theatre but The women in black production I attended in the west end a while ago was excellent . Creepy , unsettling and genuinely scary in parts . Helped by being presented in a seriously creepy old theatre .

That sounds really good might have to check it out. We don't go often but have seen Lion King and Car Man this year both of which I enjoyed. I was surprised I enjoed Car Man as much as I did.

I think it's only on for another month or so. Not sure if it tours after or not though.

Was that on at the Hippodrome Natch? I saw it advertised for a while, and was going to book some tickets, but then circumstances changed and i'd forgotten all about it. Glad it was a good production because, although I was slightly underwhelmed with the book (some of the praise was a bit overboard) it seemed like it should work excellently on stage.

If there's anyone under-25 here who's often around London, and the Southbank in particular, you should be snapping up the £5 National Theatre tickets for younguns. I saw a load over a couple year period including a couple of Shakespeare plays, a Fela Kuti biographic, some farces, a play about the end of the world with a load of boobies, a christmas play with Catherine Tate, one set in a Glasweigan tennant house, The History Boys, something about a foster-care centre (called Home), Woman in Black and War Horse.

Theatre is so much better than cinema (obviously), and if you're young there's no reason why it shouldn't be cheaper as well.

I love going to the theatre. Never seen a bad production to be honest, and if offered, Ill watch anything. From massive West End productions, to my mate's local youth theatre group who put on a stunning performance of Beauty & the Beast at the local high school a few weeks back.

Seen loads of the big ones in London, Liverpool and Manchester, Wicked, Rocky Horror, Mamma Mia, Grease, Oliver, Dirty Dancing, Lion King, Les Mis, Blood Brothers etc. I think the one I enjoyed the most though was a year or two ago when Cabaret toured. Will Young played Emcee in it, and it was absolutely incredible. It somehow flew under the radar, only 3 nights in Liverpool and I got the best seats in the house for £20. Just absolutely stunning.

I wanna arrange a trip to London before November to try and see the new production of Gypsy. The film is one of my all time favourite musicals, and Id love to see it on stage.

My mums going to see Curious Incident, really jealous. Read the book a while back, one of the few that are recommended as actually accurately portraying some people with LD and it was easy reading which suits me haha.

Not been to the theatre in a while but seen quite a few over the last few years. Favourite was Spamalot in London as I love daft comedy, went to see it when it came to Sheffield and thought it was quite poor though. Lucky enough to go to NYC last summer and went to see Of Mice and Men, simple set-up but it really worked, James Franco and Chris O'Dowd being great as George & Lenny...The dog also played a starring role as it got up to wee up the set and had a massive yawn at the point it was suggested he should be killed, for a dog its comedy timing was perfect.

Yeah it was at the hippodrome and it was sold out pretty much. We were sat in the top section this time on the benches with someone sat literally right on top of me. Not the most comfy way to watch a 2 hour show but that's all they had left as we only remembered last week ourselves.

I've been to quite a few. The last one was The Woman in Black though and it was poor, they basically relied on speakers turned up way too loud to make you jump every ten minutes, it was like going to see a sub standard modern horror film. Probably not the same production that Aber went to see, by the sounds of things.

Like the theatre too, though not been to see a production for a few years up here. Think the last one was a modern retelling of MacBeth which was pretty good, and I got a bonus of a nipslip from the woman playing Lady MacBeth during the sleepwalking scene! ;)

Watched quite a few recorded plays showing some of the greats playing the big Shakespearean parts, and they are always worth a watch to see how different each actor and director approach the works. However you cannot substitute seeing the actual play performed live in front of you.

Went to the Rose Playhouse a few weeks ago and got to perform in a few Shakespeare plays. Roles were pulled out of a hat and members of the public just rolled up and watched. My acting sucks.

I watched Othello at the RSC in Stratford Upon Avon too and the guy who played Iago - Lucian Msamati - was a different gravy. Absolutely immense in the role.

I usually treat the wife to a show of some description over the Christmas period so currently deciding what to buy this year. Last year we saw the Nutcracker at the Royal Ballet. I'd never seen a ballet before and was a little sceptical however I really enjoyed it. Considering seeing it again but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions? Something Christmassy in London.

The Reduced Shakespeare Company's abridged performance of all his novels is pretty funny. I'm a sucker for Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes shows, I'll be seeing a Holmes one next month.

Looking forward to Brave New World which will be showing here in November. I think it's a similar production to last years 1984 tour. So that should be good.

Ah a Sherlock Holmes play would be great to watch. Always liked the stories and have the complete works there that I work through now and again. We just don't get much stiff up here outside of am dram unless you're in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

What Holmes play are you seeing and where? That's right up my street.

Saw 1984 in the summer. Absolutely stunning (I spoke about it in the second post).

Sherlock Holmes and the Ripper Murders at Blackpool's Grand Theatre. Early November. I bought the tickets ages ago and joyfully discovered I could have gone for free today.

Completely fresh wasn't it? Brave New World is supposed to be similar. I think the same production team are going through classic dystopian novels.

Holmes wasn't that great. They added in clichés of the mythology for no purpose other than to placate the audience. "The game is afoot"," elementary, my dear Watson" and the like. Holmes was also introduced getting smacked up for no other reason than he does in the novels, it was irrelevant to the play.

The acting was good, the plot was intriguing and there were many humourous parts. These saved it from being a disaster.

The production was sloppy and lazy, the actors were looking at a painting at one point which was just an empty frame. The scenery remained stagnant throughout when the play took place in various locations. That's not unfamiliar but is a personal gripe, especially when the props weren't too difficult to move or conceal.

One of the actors preempted his actions in attacking a woman and had to come away for a stage effect, only to go back to attacking the woman. It looked daft. Another actor, who thankfully wasn't too prominent, didn't have enough boom in his voice to effectively deliver his lines. I was sat five rows from the front and could barely hear him, my sister was sat in the gallery and couldn't at all.

Watched The Lion King at Sunderland Empire the other year and loved it. My first trip to the theatre and now I can't wait to go again.

Got two tickets for Dial M for Murder next month for £16. Of Mice and Men in March, which was a Christmas gift.
