Don't blame the player, blame the game. Every corporation will try to maximise shareholder value so will try to pay as little as possible in tax.

The amount some of the larger players pay is criminal though. It's about time something was done.

The tories won't as they'll appear to be anti-business and will crumble once more when the banks and FTSE companies threaten to go elsewhere again.

We live in a capitalist society therefore it is a necessity that corporations avoid as much tax as possible. Like C&B says, something needs to be done and as Salty says nothing will be done by this government.

Which is exactly how our policies are increasingly hijacked (bought) to benefit multi national corporations. Things will only continue to get worse because of the conditions created by the capitalist machine that is the system we live by.

I look forward to the channel 5 documentary when they record all the chief executives splashing the cash and taking the piss out of us with their banker mates.

The idea that corporations will leave Britain if the treasury enforces corporation tax is such bollocks. They will stay near the wealth creation, it's empty blustering which either our politicians believe. Which makes them ridiculously credulous or it's a convenient excuse to feed to the public which makes them self serving c***. I imagine it's a mix of the two.

Exactly. They basically pay the government for access to the market. As long as there is a market they'll wanna feed it.

As opposed to the previous Labour government who, ummm, did nothing too. But it was a fairer, non-kissing-of-hands, more salt of the earth nothing. It was a much more balanced, sharing, egalitarian nothing. A kind of fuck-all for the people nothing. A Nothing of Mass Distraction.

Comparing Tony Blair's government with this one is like comparing green apples with red apples.

 I like that. Yeah, I should have said successive governments, it's the same with an unwillingness to start a serious social housing building project. Not that he will, but if Corybn did become prime minister he'd deal with both these problems.

Completely agree that a) we should do all we can to minimise tax evasion and b) the idea that corporations will up sticks and leave if forced to pay tax is bollocks. However, I genuinely believe it's very difficult to create rules for multinationals that will guarantee they pay their way. These companies pay serious wonga to the best accountants and lawyers around to avoid paying their way.

I'd be interested to know how many people posting here snub companies they know to be tax dodgers. It strikes me as a bit hypocritical to complain that Government haven't stopped tax dodging if you buy stuff from Amazon.

I'm really against tax avoidance. I was telling my mate so the other day in Starbucks whilst using my vodafone cell to order some shit off Amazon.

I'm not sure I agree. It's not down to us to police. I pay money to a company and I assume they pay what they owe. Not everyone can research every company they want to deal with to make the choice. The government should cut out the loopholes (totally agree that it's difficult to do mind).

Two problems with that article. Firstly, I don't believe it's impossible to understate your profits globally, should you so wish. Secondly, there already is a tax based on sales.

With Facebook, my understanding of the situation is that they paid their staff a load of money. I like to see staff being paid rather than companies hoarding money, and I've not seen any indication that the staff avoided tax.

But when we do know about these accusations, most of us still don't do anything. So we must be making assumptions that we know to be false, in the interests of laziness.

There is a tax based on sales but that is applicable to the consumer at the point of sale so I'm not really seeing the relevance to corporation tax.
Paying your employees good wages or bonuses doesn't exempt a company from its legal and moral obligation to pay its taxes.

Paying your employees would be a cost, and costs lower profit, and corporation tax is on profit.

Yes and profit is calculated after taxable costs such as wages and bonuses. So the wages a company pay become irrelevant in the application of corporation tax, I don't why you brought it up.

Facebook paid low tax. Because they had low profits. They paid their staff a lot. This lowered profits. Paying your staff a lot is not, I believe, a bad thing. Therefore, paying low tax because you paid your staff a lot, is not, I believe, a bad thing. I don't know why you got confused.

Wages (and any other deductible expenses) are hugely relevant to corporation tax. I don't know how you could think otherwise.

As a company Facebook made massive profit and a large portion of that was generated in the uk. By artificially creating a loss in the uk in order to bypass( illegally it turns out) British tax laws they are in contempt of their obligations. The wages and bonuses paid out are a tax avoidance scheme and about as valid as a Ponzi scheme.

Blimey, we are talking about different things. I am talking about the story on the BBC. Got a link for the illegal stuff?
