I do get frustrated when criticism of a black person is labelled as racist so freely.

They were beyond average gaffes, she was barely comprehensible on the Sky News interview. And how can anyone defend her police radio interview? It's not racist, it's just criticism.

This level of political correctness really isn't helpful.

Good job I didn't accuse everyone who criticises Diane Abbott of being a big fat racist then, isn't it? I do get frustrated when posters on this site seemingly lack basic comprehension skills.

FWIW, I've seen Michael Fallon and Karen Bradley, to name but two, deliver what might appropriately be described as "car crash interviews". Not many column inches written about them, surprisingly...

My point is, it's ok to criticise Abbott's performances without it being deemed racist. And that wasn't just aimed at you but everyone who claimed criticism of her was racist.

I can't comment on Fallon and Bradley, I haven't seen their interviews so I can't judge the level of shite they delivered.

Thanks for the comprehension comment, that's lovely.

That's sort of the point though. There is a slightly harsher treatment of Abbott compared to other equally as useless tossers on all sides of the political spectrum.

As for the Kendall thing, I will address it tomorrow when the Tories unfortunately trounce home.

Diane Abbott gets slaughtered for who she is, what she looks like, her tone of voice. All this is at least partly racialised - even if it's not consciously racist.

When women in the labour party like Jess Phillips or Stella Creasy get sexist abuse, mainstream feminism leaps to their defence. When Diane Abbott cops overt racist, misogynist, fatphobic abuse every day, there's crickets.

There are legitimate critiques of Abbott, but they're not legitimately applied. She is singled out for criticism, ridicule and derision in a way white and male parliamentarians never are. It's worth yourself asking why you've not seen Bradley or Fallon's horrible interviews. Why ridiculing them is not a meme.

And I'm not saying that everyone who criticises Abbott is a racist, but the reasons she gets so much criticism is due to racism (and misogyny).

Gonna leave this here - from a few years back, but it's worth considering today.

That's fine but is it because she's black or because she's a labour MP? I've heard non Tories complaining about the pro-Tory press so maybe it's that? Or the fact she's shadow Home Secretary and was seen almost as Corbyn's left arm so very much in the public eye, probably more so than those other MPs mentioned?

I just think it's easy to chuck the race card around sometimes.

It's fine to be critical of Abbott for her performance but you're lying to yourself if you actually think that the majority of the abuse she gets is a critique of her interview skills. "Fat, wobbling racist" "thick fucking slag" are two of the myriad comments I've seen today. Chuck in that disgusting picture put out by that rapey weirdo Guido Fawkes and you get the gist
But through it all she has stayed strong. Through all the racist slurs, all the dog whistle racism and misogyny from people who should know better

The abuse has been going for on ever since she's been in the public eye. It's not new.
Go and search Dianne on Twitter or Facebook. I think you'd be genuinely shocked.

In fairness, I've seen equally horrific things aimed at May. Tis the internet and the morality of the internet is dead.

Nothing near the abuse Dianne gets though. She's tough mind, she graduated from Cambridge in the 70's. As a black, working class women I bet that was tougher than being on the receiving end of the impotent rantings of sweaty, inadequate, rapey ,racist nerds.

Seen the black percentage of students at Cambridge? Fucking depressing that.

On a different note.
I know loads of people post these bullshit stories about their kids but this one is true.
My five year old daughter told her grandparents that they need to vote red because " you shouldn't have to pay to go to the doctors"

Unless you have access to Diane Abbott's medical records it's probably best not to accuse her party of lying about her ill health. I think it's really rather tasteless.

I nearly posted last night that I thought she looked ill. In fact, I was surprised no one had mentioned it as a possibility in terms of her "performance". Generally speaking, I think there's something a little unsavoury about the way she's treated in the media (I'm quite doubtful, whether a white man, or, indeed a white woman's gaffes would receive the same kind of attention that hers do). I mean, obviously people are entitled to think she's a complete wally (and there is some supporting evidence on this front) but the tone of some of the criticism makes me feel a bit uncomfortable.

It's pure coincidence, of course.

You've only gone and pulled the race card ffs

It can't possibly be the fact that she's a fucking moron that can't even count.

Boris Johnson, the most ridiculed politician of the last few years is a white male.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the criticism (fine) or abuse (not fine) Diane Abbott has received through this election, there's no doubt judging from my own circle of people/colleagues/acquittances etc that she's been a vote loser for them. Confidence in Corbyn has increased in people I speak with, but lack of confidence in Abbott has definitely detracted from that. And no matter who you are, what background or politics you are, you can't have car crash after car crash like she has during this election and not expect to cause your party damage.

With our media, it is a self perpetuating issue which is unfortunate for her. After one big gaffe the media almost expect her to have another and another, and sure enough she fell into that trap. Labour seemed to want to keep putting her out there and hoped she improve.

I read everywhere that she's a cracking local MP, but it takes something different to front a party to the nation and win elections. Abbott demonstrably doesn't have that. To my mind, if more of the PLP were behind JC over the last 18 months then there's no doubt she wouldn't have got such a role at the forefront of the party and someone more capable on the national stage would have had it instead.

Hey at least she's put herself out there I suppose, not hidden in a cupboard.

I think regardless of what happens tomorrow it's only a matter of time, Corbyn has lit the fuse.

This election was called & handled in the most sly way possible. They were intent on wiping out any opposition and effectively turning this country into a one party block voting state.

Whilst I'm not confident enough to dare to dream Labour will actually win I think the Tories attempts at takeover will be resisted with ease. For that Corbyn is a hero. He's done this from the depths of despair though no fault of his own. Absolute G.

Think you'll find he's a "lovable buffoon".

Quite astonishing how one tries to pre-empt the "race card" charge by explicitly stating "obviously people are entitled to think she's a complete wally (and there is some supporting evidence on this front)", and yet people just can't seem to help themselves. The blanket denials that race could ever be a component in some of the criticism are quite revealing, I think.

As Ian said earlier, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that some of the criticism aimed at Abbott is because she's a woman and a black woman at that. Anyone who thinks otherwise is extremely naive.

Maybe some of her poor performances in the media have been down to her poor health. Just a thought.

I'm too in the Tory majority of 100+ camp, really hope I'm wrong. Got a couple of positive things re: Labour from others voting but that's just anecdotes I spose.

Will probably be analysing the 'what happens now' this time tomorrow, but the result will indicate a good deal about Labour's future for sure.

Funny she wasn't suffering from ill health BEFORE she naused every interview she took part in.

I think Labour supporters have May to thank rather than Jezza.

May has helped, but the polls, both electoral and personal, haven't turned around because people don't trust May. They've turned around because the manifesto has given Jeremy a platform for his ideas and people love them. It has been a positive campaign, from start to finish.

That's not true. Before the election was called she missed several debates in the house of commons due to illness.

Anyone bold enough to make a prediction in terms of seats or vote share? I'm steering clear this time I think!

What I will say is that I think much will depend on turnout and how the vote goes in Northern and Midlands marginals. Given some of the regional polling we've seen I think Labour will do ok in the rest of the country - they ought to do well in London and other metropolitan areas and Wales looks like being ok for them. I'd expect their Southern vote to hold up too (not that they have a great deal of seats to lose outside of the capital) so it's very much the more provincial Brexit inclined Mids/Northern Lab seats I'm concerned about. We'll soon see, I suppose.
