I think PNE will finish in the top half if they keep Beckford. I reckon we'll be somewhere between 14th-21st and I'm not sure about MK.

On top of Gallagher, Beckford and Johnstone I still think we would need another 4 or 5 players of genuine Championship quality if we want to compete. It's harsh but I hope we don't get too sentimental in handing out contract extensions to fringe players such as Wiseman, King, Buchanan, Ebanks-Blake & Davies and we would need to offload the likes of Little, Reid and Jones too.

Johnstone, Stuckmann
Woods, Clarke, Wright, Huntington, Laird
Welsh, Kilkenny, Browne, Brownhill
Gallagher, Humphrey, Johnson
Garner, Beckford, Hugill

is a decent core to build on.

Looking forward to being enlightened on who our one man is, i'm throwing John Welsh into the hat

John Welsh has been a absolute machine since January. Soon turning himself into a PNE ledge that lad!!

Pleased Preston have made it, good away day with an excellent allocation of tickets. Far better than going all the way down to Swindon, think Preston will survive but they'll need to strengthen the Championship is a massive step up.

Ha, is it bollocks, Hume and Mellor were past their best and weren't a patch on Garner or Beckford. Other than Coutts (the one we had, not in his current form/ condition) none of them would get near this side. It was an abysmal team.

Time will tell pal.

It will and if we make an instant return to L1 then I'm certain this lot will at least make a fight of it, unlike the talent-less, uncaring bastards who took us down last time while raking in over £11m in wages.

Happy for Preston, proper club as opposed to the others that could have come up!

I am alarmed at some of the comments made by people on this thread though. I don't see how anyone can say 'the three promoted teams will do well'. That division has looked so poor compared to last season, it's a nonsense to say they'll do well on the back of promotion from a poor league.

I don't buy this theory that Preston will do well with there current team either, bar Keeper (Rudd was better), Johnson and Beckford it's the same team that got battered by us (our side was weaker then too).

Bristol's side isn't all that special either, I mean Aaron Wilbraham  the fact he scored 20 shows how shit legue one was last season. Freeman wasn't ever in the same league as Pringle and Pringle has struggled with the step up in class. They're similar players, can't see Freeman fairing any better,. The rest of their side is made of up good league one players; Ayling, Flint, Little etc... If they don't invest massively they'll struggle.

Finally Mkat, this is the year that gobshite Karl Robinson comes back down to earth with a bump, after all their loanees have gone, what are they left with? Possibly a team on bar with Blackpool's.

Enjoy the championship, it's one of the most exciting divisions in the world but Bristol, Mkat and Preston fans you will have a shock if you think you're going to be safe as you are now!!

I also agree with SERNWA.

We pissed a far stronger League One in 2012 and finished 9th in a weaker Championship the following season. Not saying it can't be done, the likes of Bournemouth, Brentford and Wolves have shown it can but I'm surprised that some of these newbies are actually expecting to be up there.

I actually agree with SERNWA (apart from us being as good as Blackpool, that isn't true).

We are relying on freebies and loans though (although that hasn't worked out too badly so far due to having good links with the big clubs - Afobe and Bamford etc). All any of our fans realistically expect is to have a season like Rotherham's tbh with hopefully the same outcome.

Blackpool comment is a bit over top, apologies and It's not really your fans who have commented on how you'll stay up to be fair.

I actually agree with most of that :O

Apart from saying Rudd is better than Johnstone, he really isn't.

Of the teams that went up the year you did, we are most comparable to you lot IMO. Some of our fans on our main forum were looking at Brentford and conveniently forgetting how you've fared this season. It doesn't really help that this league has now lost Blackpool, Millwall and Wigan who were always going to struggle either.

P.S. Welcome Preston.

I hope we do better than Rotherham in the sense that I don't want us signing 30+ players this season. That can only be negative to the squad.

I only meant in terms of team quality and budget to be fair.

We will add like 4 loanees, 3 freebies and 1 for an undisclosed fee to what we already have I reckon. I don't care though, it'll be a good year and I'm happy that Winkelman is shrewd enough to put the long term future of the club ahead of short term gain. He may be a weird, club stealing wanker but he's a good chairman, that can't be argued.

Linked with Sheffield United, though he'd be mad to make that move.
Ahhh yes the terrible, terrible article saying he wants to move back up north to be closer to home. Considering we are giving him a new contract and he wants a crack with us in the championship he isn't going anywhere.

Alot of sense in your post SERNWA to be fair.
I will defend Johnstone at PNE , he looks very good.
On us, we've only been gone 2 years so know what a tough and good league this is but Freeman is a far better player than the one you saw previously. Cotts has converted him from a winger to a central midfielder and he has shone there. Wether he can sustain his progress remains to be seen but he belongs up here at least.
As for predictions, you won't hear me say we're going to blow this league away, it's too good for that. Offer me safety / mid table and I would happily take it.

It always seems a particularly hard jump to make from L1 to the Championship. From Championship to PL you have a considerable sum of money to play with and a lot of talented(ish) players (not all necessarily with the right attitude) and with a good manager and sensible buying, you can make it work.

But from L1, it seems tougher. The money difference isn't huge and no matter how big you are, you're going to be competing against the lowest of the low PL clubs. Even after a season or two in the Championship, it may not be much easier...I'm looking at a story about how a player is likely to go to Bournemouth rather than Wolves or Cardiff.

Personally, I think it makes it all the more remarkable how well Brentford did last season. Also makes me wonder how the Cherries would be doing if they hadn't been promoted with all that talent.

Preston fans feeling they have a rock solid defence may have a different opinion soon. We came up last year thinking exactly the same thing and were soon leaking goals fast. The defence that looked awesome in L1 suddenly looked a bit lightweight. It was a problem that was to plague us until the very last match of the season.

That's one of my issues for City Wolfie tbh. We played a back 3 last season with very attack minded wing backs in Mark Little and Joe Bryan. While JB is a fine defender as well as attack minded, I'm not sure we can get away with it up here.
When your centre half gets 15 goals, it shows just how attacking we have been and we will have to temper that a bit next season methinks.
As for going to Bournemouth over Cardiff, I would rather go to Tranmere than legoland!

All those seasons trying to get out of League One only to return to it straight after a promotion?

Can't see that. Surely he owes it to MK and himself to see how he does in the Championship.
