It was the season before you went up mate, after the way you played at our place i took the 25/1 on you winning the league the next year and got ew money back, you went up with cambridge and saufffffend
Ahh yup, getting my teams mixed up, you went up 88/89 and we followed you in 89/90.
I had always thought that we went up with Exeter, Southend and Tranmere that year, hazy childhood memories I guess!

Yeah the next season we went up with them again, then had some great battles with them in the Championship after that.

I enjoyed our 5-0 demolition job of Barnet back in '06, I must say.

The second half performance of the 7-1 win over Rochdale was incredible stuff. 2-1 at HT IIRC, Ernie Cooksey scored a king-fu like type volley and Rochdale gave us half a game but we stepped it up in the second half and trounced them.

Weirdly, a 3-2 loss at home to MK Dons is one that I remember because I left the game delighted with how we played. We genuinely played very well, as did MK Dons. I suppose it was just two very good teams who gave everything, with goals, cards and tackles flying in all over the place along with Allen having tantrums on the sideline. There some frickin' good players on the pitch that day.

Saw the 9-0 humiliation of Bournemouth, can't believe we played them in the FL play offs not that long ago, now look how both sides have fared, slightly different tangents.

Also the 8-0 win over Northampton I think it was, those were the days!

I think that 1990/91 season was the only ever time that 3 teams promoted from Division 4 were then all promoted from Division 3 the following season. The only team that didn't go up were the champions the previous season, Exeter City who I think finished in the bottom half.

We beat Exeter on the final day of the season to clinch 3rd place. We were level on points with Bolton so had to match their result. If we hadn't have won then Bolton would have gone up. I think Tranmere finished about 6 or 7 points behind Bolton.

Wonder what happened to the manager of Bournemouth that day?

That Exeter game will live long in the memory, Tony Rees must have tried about 15 back-heels in that match and thankfully 1 came off for Cockers 1st, then his 2nd he looked about 10 yards offside but the flag stayed down!
Can you remember in the 2nd half after Exeter pulled it back to 2 - 1, Murray Jones smashed one against the post that nearly cost us promotion, then we signed him for the next season!

Your memories are just a little bit wrong. It was Cockers' first that looked miles offside from the free kick but replays later showed that the lino was right. His second was when he forced the ball home from close range going in through the back of an Exeter player, a goal that I'm fairly sure would be disallowed in this day and age. They pulled a goal back through Mark Cooper about 10 minutes into the second half but it was Exeter defender Shaun Taylor who hit the post with a header from a corner about 5 minutes from the end. I remember it clear as day, time seemed to stand still and the ball seemed destined for the top corner but I still reckon the massed ranks of The Pontoon collectively manage to blow the ball slightly off course and it thumped against the post before being cleared. If the ball had gone in then Bolton would have gone up and we'd have to have gone into the play-offs.

Well over 15000 in Blundell Park that day and the atmosphere in The Pontoon that day was incredible and will never ever be seen again unfortunately.

Well apart from getting 3 parts of it wrong the rest i remembered ok....... ;) :ffs:
Funny, i'd always remembered it as a Murray Jones 20 yard piledriver that hit the post, no idea where i got that from then, but in my defence, i was only 10 at the time! :P1:
Was i right in remembering Rees back-heel setting up Cockers goal, but 2nd instead of 1st, or had my 10 year old mind just invented that as well?! :dk:

Edit: just watched it back, it was a flick but not a back-heel from Rees.
My hairs were standing up watching that, great memories. :D :D
