Chester really is becoming a graveyard for decent managers. They seem to have ruined Steve Burr, Marcus Bignot, and now these two, all NLN winning managers.
I'm guessing the problem isn't the managers. Football has moved on a lot since Chester reformed, and this league really is a tough league...
We gave some players a relative rest today (by relative rest I mean dropped them to the bench, but still had to bring them on because others were either going to hobble off or be sent off!). You'll probably just face whoever we've got fit!
Southport 2-0 Alfreton
Alfreton probably edged the game over the first 20 minutes but created little. We went 1-0 up slightly against the run of play through a Connor Woods 20 yarder that Alfreton's keeper got a hand to but couldn't keep out. After that Alfreton went full Heath-ball, managing...
No such joy I'm afraid. It's Liam Watson v Billy Heath though, so you should know what to expect. It'll be a rare home Tuesday night game for me, so if you're really lucky you might get a write-up on here!
When Carden managed us he had a decent set of players but didn't have a clue how to get them playing. He's done ok at Warrington since.
I think he's still based in Maghull, so if he did take the job I'd be surprised if he stuck it out for long.
Southport 4-1 Boston
Actually a much closer game than the scoreline suggests. We were 2-0 up but Boston were piling the pressure on and deservedly got one back. A brave triple substitution meant a formation change from 5-3-2 to 4-2-3-1 and we attacked more down the flanks which changed the...
Buxton v Morecambe is a classic NPL fixture from the 80's and early 90's. It should never be considered as suitable for TV, but unfortunately it will.
I think Alty / Gateshead v Charlton will be another one for TV coverage.
Since we brought in Terry McPhillips as assistant manager we've improved a lot. We weren't far away from being competitive before this, and had a very tough start to the season. We now seem capable of playing decent football as well as having Watson Hoofball as plan B. We've got a small but...
Southport 3-2 Chester.
We were 3-1 up at half time, but should have been out of sight with the chances we had. Good advantage from the ref for our first after Hmami was badly fouled, but Bainbridge slotted in the corner straight away. Chester equalised through a penalty, which did look a pretty...
Kettering have pulled a sicky tomorrow, our match there has been cancelled due to COVID in their camp. Second time it's happened to us already this season after Chorley did the same to us. This season could descend into a farce if it carries on like this.
Any throw-in within 40 yards of goal goes towards the 6 yard box. Any free-kick within 60 yards goes towards the 6 yard box. The disappointing thing is, when we do get the ball down and play a bit we look half-decent :dk:
No complaints, you were more composed in possession and dealt with every set piece we threw (quite literally) at you.
The greatest irony from the game is our first goal game as a result of a brilliant bit of football which cut you apart, which unfortunately is out of keeping with how we...
Don't give me that, the last time you (the former version of yourselves anyway) played them you put 14 goals past them and still got knocked out of that cup. That grudge has never left you :woot::ds:
Being the biggest game in the history of a team who play at a roped-off park pitch close to a closed down coal mine isn't really something to shout about. You played plenty of teams at their level 2008-2010 anyway!
Alty at home tomorrow. I've always thought of us as being generally at a similar level, however you don't get where they are in the NL without being a half-decent team. I expect them to completely out-football us, and us to completely out anti-football them. They'll still probably win though.
No, you've got it right. There's definitely still a Haribo factory in Pontefract, unless it's disappeared since I drove past it 4 hours ago. I'm happy for Ponte Colls, decent tie and a local(ish) derby for them, not sure how their ground will cope though!
Alty at home for us if we get past...
