On the contrary, our progress in the competition to the final (and semis the year after) was one of the few bright spots during the 5 years before we got raped and relegated to non-league. Admittedly, it's not a competition I care greatly about but it gave us a chance to play at the Millenium...

I think one of the things with this debate is that to the neutral, it's almost a footnote that Villa won the Champion's League (sic/w/e) as Forest winning it twice is the bizarre memorable one and LIverpool obviously cleared up (before getting everyone banned for making a mess) in that era. Or...
