The XI Farke has ended up going for is far less risk-averse than I was expecting him to go:
GK: Krul
RB: Mumba
CB: Hanley
CB: Omobamidele (a first senior start for the 18 year old)
LB: Quintilla
CM: Sorensen
CM: McLean
RW: Buendia
CAM: Dowell
LW: Cantwell
STR: Pukki
Bench of Nyland, Vrancic...
Yeah, I think the smartest thing we can do is give as many of the returning internationals as possible a rest rather than risking any more injuries. Ideally in the situation, we could do with Hanley being rested and wrapped in cotton wool, but equally we can't just completely change the defence...
No idea what sort of team we'll be able to put out tomorrow, as none of our 8 players involved in internationals last night made it to morning training. A few players (Krul, Nyland, Hernandez and Omobamidele) have made it back and have returned negative tests, so will be available tomorrow.
And...
Quite a few of ours in action again tonight (including Finland needlessly giving Pukki 15 minutes in a dead-rubber friendly), so it will be interesting to see what sort of team we put out on Friday. Would expect Pukki to be rested, while I imagine Hanley will be straight back in despite starting...
Pukki with a late equaliser for Finland tonight to bring him within two goals of being Finland's joint all-time top goalscorer. Meanwhile, Hernandez has gotten a goal on his first start for Cuba (though, not enough to stop them from losing and being eliminated from the qualifiers already).
And Hornchurch have won the penalty shoot-out to get to the final. What a story that is in this bizarre season, and what an interesting final it should be between Hereford and Hornchurch.
Can't be too often that no Step 1 sides end up in the Trophy final.
Not surprised to see Buendia highest-rated as usual, but curious to see the goalkeeper position rated a fair bit lower than every other position across the pitch. Makes me wonder what sort of standards WhoScored have for goalkeepers if Krul's performances only merit a 6.91.
Now confirmed that Ben Gibson's ankle injury requires surgery, so he'll be missing the rest of the season. We'll have to trust Zimmermann to deputise and hope that getting a decent run of games will help him find the form he showed in our previous title-winning campaign.
Hanley on the scoresheet for Scotland tonight with a header. Would be good if he could get one on target for us one of these days; he seems to do very well at getting himself on the end of our attacking corners and free kicks, but he does equally well at putting his effort off target almost...
Pukki at the double for Finland again, but not enough for them to get three points against Bosnia. I'm sure they'll use him in the next qualifier, but hopefully they rest him for the friendly at the end of the break.
Meanwhile, Onel Hernandez has been named on the bench for Cuba's game against...
Let's see, we've got a lot:
Cuba: Onel Hernandez (now that they've finally stopped their policy of only playing domestic players in the national team)
Denmark Under 21s: Jacob Sorensen
England Under 21s: Max Aarons and Ollie Skipp
Finland: Teemu Pukki
Greece: Dimitris Giannoulis (I'm assuming...
Well, the winning run comes to an end, but we remain unbeaten after today's 1-1 draw. More concerning is that we lost Giannoulis to concussion and Gibson to what could potentially be a long-term injury. If so, that would be an absolute disaster in terms of our prospects next season, as he's been...
Brentford choking their automatic promotion chances late on for the second season running.
For us, we've surprisingly gone for the front three of Cantwell, Dowell and Buendia behind Pukki. An interesting choice that could prove to be slightly too aggressive, but if it works it'll be lovely to...
100 points is the aim now, anything more than that would be delightful. With 9 games still to play, we've only won two fewer than we did in the entirety of our 2018/19 title winning season (we won 27 games that year, comapred to 25 this year already).
Rupp will miss tomorrow's game for us as he's picked up a hamstring strain, but him and Idah should hopefully both be back for Preston after the international break. Besides that, Buendia will be available after missing Wednesday's fixture, but wouldn't be surprised to see him come on from the...
This is definitely the weakest Championship I can remember in recent times, no other standout teams and so many teams just sticking ten men behind the ball against us. I reckon it's at least in part cos of covid, as teams generally haven't spent much money to improve their squads and there's...
Don't think we could have possibly asked for a better start than this. Forest standing off and trying to stick all 11 men behind the ball, but that's making it far too easy for us and they've barely even touched the ball so far. Typical Pukki for the first goal, but a class volleyed finish from...
Only change to the XI tonight sees Dowell replace Buendia, as his wife apparently gave birth overnight. Gives him a bit of a rest before the weekend at least, but it's still not great to be without the best player in the league. We'll just have to make do and hope Dowell can step up to the task...
Forest away tonight, and as they did last time I'm sure they'll provide stubborn opponents but we should eventually be able to grind our way past them. No changes on the injury front as far as I'm aware, so am only expecting to see one change to the starting XI based on how Sunday's game went...
