There’s no way Clarke could have played in our current system, so it made sense we only offered him a backup role.
Our high line / press will leave centre backs high up the pitch and often 1v1 which isn’t where Clarke’s strengths are these days.
I’m sure he’s got another good season in him...
Fans moaning when we let 40/41 year old Peter Clarke go.. then we sign Robinson, Byrne, Turnbull to compete with Davies, along with development and backup signings of Hockenhull and Jameson.
Another ridiculous defensive record loading.
Well after that signing that’ll be Turnbull slotting straight into middle CB of our back three for this first game.
Not sure which 3 of Robinson, Turnbull, Davies and Byrne play when all available though.
Starting XI:
GK: Ross Doohan
LCB: Luke Robinson
CB: Jordan Turnbull
RCB: Neil Byrne
LWB: Ethan Bristow
CM: Lee Oconnor
CM: Reece McAlear
RWB: Josh Dacres Cogley
CAM: Josh Hawkes
ST: Kane Hemmings
ST: Elliot Nevitt
Tom Davies, Kieron Morris and Charlie Jolley all out injured for this game...
Being a yo yo club is much more exciting than stagnating at one particular level.
Im not too sure the size of the club or past achievements have too much bearing these days though. Half of league one is “smaller” than half of league two and some of the national league.
It’s more recency...
Curious how we line up for the first game.
We’ve played 3-4-1-2 most of pre season but our home 4-4-2 was obviously exceptional last season.
Our recruitment has all been geared towards 3-4-1-2 unless we bring more winger options in over the coming days.
I think we’re going under the radar a little because we’ve signed a lot of young players that people haven’t really seen much of.
But with all our best players retained from last season and then smart recruitment for specific roles (Lewis as a plan B off the bench) and some high potential like...
Your only shots came from 25 yards out under pressure and didn’t threaten the keeper once.
We missed two sitters and various half chances second half that went into side netting.
Well. Don’t take your chances and you get punished. Vale were dire and offered little to the game, but our own downfall not taking any of the numerous chances and then trying to shut up shop final 10.
We’ll see.
I’d be extremely disappointed if there isn’t fire in the belly of our players tonight. Shouldn’t have given Walsall a sniff on Saturday and we want to stay ahead of the pack rather than have to chase anyone.
We were hardly outplayed or anything. Walsall offered nothing all game till Clarke had the red mist descend.
Agree it was a terrible pitch that our wingers really struggled with. We’d have wiped the floor with them at PP.
Just need to grind out a win at all costs tonight, I believe Hartlepool...
