    Attacks in Paris + Belgium

Correct. I've lived and worked abroad in a few places now and in each case I've usually developed a circle of friends and associates who are, with a few exceptions, primarily Brits. Observing others, it's usually been a similar scenario. It's not been to defend ourselves against structural...

    Sushi

Big fan of Japanese cuisine in general (hadn't tried it until I left Glasgow - we're a gastronomically limited bunch...) particularly the restaurants themselves and the ritual involved in the preparation, service and consumption. There's a deliberateness about the process; the apprenticeship...

    European Union Referendum

I think I wrote that in a bad mood when I heard on the Beeb that Greece was using the negotiations to get concessions on its bailout package... What I've seen in the last few days is just further evidence of the dysfunctional nature of the organisation. From the outside at least - living in...

    European Union Referendum

Seeing the circus of a negotiation taking place in Brussels has probably tipped me towards leaving. National interest clearly trumps any notion of pooling resources/risk for the common good.

    European Union Referendum

Why do you consider it ludicrously naïve to think that it can be reformed? (I happen to agree with you, just curious to hear your angle on it, and anyone else's for that matter...)

Derren Brown - Pushed To The Edge

Watched it again, briefly, this morning and picked up on the Weekend at Bernie's reference, which I missed last night. Often his work is quite dark, but last night I found myself laughing almost the whole way through. He was really pushing people into the slap stick comedy territory. Worked...

    Attacks in Paris + Belgium

I can't remember any politics at University, from recollection everybody was quite indifferent. However I did go part-time, to a trumped former polytechnic, where the main topic of conversation was usually what the latest model of Vauxhall Corsa was.

Purple is the colour of royalty and power, the colour of Queens maybe...?! Maybe I misread the earlier post and it was actually a group of heterosexual blokes complaining they were offended? :2thumb:

    The Holidays Thread

I kept my eye out for club nights, bars etc. and there's definitely a lot going on over the weekends. Base yourself near the old Jewish quarter as that is where all the action is. It's very 'East Berlin' with the ruin bars and dingy night spots. Very unpretentious and cheap. Borkonyha is a...

Hey Techno Natch , I really enjoyed Bydapest thanks. I was there for 4 nights through the week, so I never made it to any club nights unfortunately and it was pretty low key in general. The highlight for me was simply walking around the centre and checking out the bars and cafes. (The ruin...

Nice spot! It's actually not to be bad from November to March, in fact it can get quite chilly when the wind changes from south to north and blows in cold air from China. Probably the nicest time of the year to visit. The rest of the year can be quite unbearable!

Getting chartered probably. Trip to Israel was great too.

Where do your friends stay in HK? If you can get free accommodation then you're sorted as that's the priciest element of any trip to HK. September can be very humid though.

I spent last New Years in Istanbul on the way back to Hong Kong Techno Natch, really enjoyed it. Only there for 4-5 days, so wouldn't claim to have seen most of the city (it's a massive place). However, we found a few nice areas. We stayed around Galata. A lot of cool bars, restaurants and a...

    The Religion Thread

My parents are both fairly stereotypical dour Church of Scotland types, strangely it wasn't enough to put me off religion though, I guess as they had the "let's ignore the bad parts of Bible and be NICE" belief. I was never particularly in to it, or practicing, but I always accepted it as...

I work in construction - chartered quantity surveyor. Took a hiatus when the economy went tits up in 2010 - ended up working in New Zealand following the earthquakes in 2011. Two years there and now spent the last few years between Hong Kong and Macao working on casino projects. Moving to UAE...

    The Holidays Thread

As corny as it sounds, I think most people go on big trips when they're ready, or feel comfortable taking long stints out by themselves. I went away when I was 23, and like yourself, envied some of the younger types, but more so because they had levels of confidence that I never had at 18 or 19...
