    there's an election

Give or take really, given Theresa May will almost certainly drag us into whatever war Donald Trump cooks up to save his presidency whereas Corbyn probably wouldn't.

    there's an election

The best way to approach any sort of negotiation is that to assume that you both want to do a deal that is of mutual benefit, rather than ranting on about how you'll walk away if you don't get what you want all the time. That just comes across weak and desperate - tacit acknowledgement you're...

    there's an election

The Conservatives want to bring in voter ID laws (which would not have prevented significant recent cases of electoral fraud but do limit access to the ballot box), first past the post in elections that currently use supplementary systems. I wouldn't hold your breath for the tories doing...

    there's an election

That survation poll is kinda bizarre. 82% of the 18-24's surveyed said they were certain to vote. They also asked whether they voted remain or leave and 86.5% of the 18-24s said they voted (one way or the other) - turnout was actually 64%. So I reckon there's sampling bias somewhere there...

    The Religion Thread

This is ridiculous overreaction. The vast majority of atheists are moderate and peace-loving and want nothing more than to co-exist in a democratic and multicultural society. Yes, some of the doctrines of atheism advocate violence against non-believers but again, most atheists don't subscribe...

    there's an election

These Tories are a fucking shambles. Does Corbyn project an aura that forces everyone in his vicinity to own themselves horribly? Theresa May's plan to go into hiding for the election campaign would have been a smart one, if she'd pulled it off.

    Explosion at Manchester Arena

This is a decent (critical) piece on Prevent. I think it's important to recognise that Prevent is both a threat to free expression and also really bad at uncovering potential extremists. https://www.lrb.co.uk/v39/n10/karma-nabulsi/dont-go-to-the-doctor

    there's an election

Yeah, totally. Hesitant to say this because I know there's a load of reasons a labour win would be ace for loads of my pals who are suffering badly under the Tories, but if Corbyn wins there's going to be a massive sense of "job done" from a substantial section of the left. Or even worse...

Who are you voting for OFFICIAL POLL

I dunno, but if we're looking at recent records, Theresa May let a load of people on terrorism watchlists go and fight in Libya in 2011 because she assumed it served the country's immediate political interests. The Tories have supporting al Qaeda in Libya and in Syria, have supported funders...

    there's an election

We've been planning to use the two weeks where everyone is depressed about elections, and five more years of Tories and suddenly becomes interested in grassroots campaigns against state violence as an opportunity to fundraise. Gonna be livid* if Corbyn fucks up all our plans by winning ffs...

There's no need for martial law anyway. Remember when leftists used to oppose the security state rather than cheerlead for it for the sake of short-term political opportunism? Just kidding we've always been trash. Sections of this reply have been redacted for security reasons.

Who are you voting for OFFICIAL POLL

Found a discarded Workers Revolutionary Party manifesto on my way home from work. They're promising the elusive Lexit followed by the formation of a Socialist United States of Europe should any of their five prospective parliamentary candidates win their seats (and, presumably, at least 641...

    Explosion at Manchester Arena

On this: Read this today - about the time Mi6 funded al Qaeda to assassinate Qadafi. It's by no means the entire scope or even the most recent incident of Britain colluding with groups it claims to oppose, but it is illustrative of the contradictions at the heart of British foreign policy -...

    Explosion at Manchester Arena

Should say, none of this should be interpreted as statements of support for or justification of the horrific acts yesterday. Can't imagine what it's like to go through something like that and thoughts with any who are affected.

    Explosion at Manchester Arena

I've just cited the perpetrators of two main attacks by Muslims for which the motivations were made clear. Maybe you can point me towards terrorist attacks perpetrated in this country by people who claim specifically scriptural, rather than secular motives? For good measure, here's Osama bin...

    Explosion at Manchester Arena

British democracy is not a particularly good idea - rooted as it continues to be in imperial relations. Nor is it in implacable conflict with "violent islamofascism" whatever that is. I mean, the UK has historically been a major funder of Islamist militias and continues to do so by funding...
