When he arrived in Leeds Bradford Airport last August, not many people would have rushed for his signature, with most only stopping to look at his beard. Mirco Antenucci was just another Italian name added to the squad in a summer transfer window that saw 15 new faces, 8 of them Italian, arrive at Leeds under the new era of Massimo Cellino; and many people (including myself) had no idea who any of them were. Now, however, the name Antenucci is turning into everyone's favourite buzzword, as the number 34 has managed to score 7 goals in 16 appearances for the club this season.
The striker, who recently became a father, arrived from Serie B side Ternana Calcio in August. Many fans were upset with the transfer, as Leeds had been heavily linked with 20-goal wonder-striker Andy Delort from Ligue 2. He now plays for Wigan's development side not having scored this season.
At the ripe-old-age of 30, Mirco may arguably be past his best, however he has still got pace and definitely a striker's finish, as many of the Leeds fans are glad to see, having lost McCormack to Fulham in the summer (albeit for £11 million). Playing alongside Doukara, who complements his strike partner with an equal display of talent with a ball at his feet, a lot of centre-back pairings in the English second tier will not look forward to playing against the duo. To put things into perspective, Mirco has done well enough to keep Billy Sharp out of the Leeds XI, something a lot of strikers in the Championship would find it hard to do. As happy as the Leeds fans were when Sharp was signed from Southampton, I'm sure there's little debate over who they would prefer to see lead the Leeds line this season.
Antenucci has taken to the English game at an unbelievable pace, something many players from Europe find it hard to do - including the elite. He is the second top scorer in the league for the players who did not play in England last season, one behind Charlton's Igor Vetokele (8 goals). Let's hope he can keep up the good goal-to-game ratio and push Leeds on and up the table.
Antenucci baby, Antenucci ooohhhhh!!
