I do like this thread, where we look at what points totals our teams will get in each month. So, with that in mind, what will your team do in the opening month of the season?

For Crewe:

Barrow(A) - Draw. We struggle on the opening day usually and Barrow, even despite the change of manager, are a solid side. Would happily take a point.

Rotherham(A, League Cup) - Lose. Evans will rotate I'm sure and we do love springing a surprise on higher level opposition, but I think we'll fall short.

Chesterfield(H) - Lose. Our home form concerns me at the moment and playing one of the sides expected to be near the top might be too much for us.

Swindon(H) - Win. Need to predict a win somewhere, so I'm hoping it's here. We have a good record against them at Gresty Road and whilst their land of the giants will make it tough for us, I'd like to think we can sneak a narrow win.

Bromley(A) - Draw. Hard to know what we'll get from them so early in the season, but feel weirdly more confident on the road than at home currently. So I'll take another point.

For Chesterfield:

Swindon (H) - Win. I do fancy us on the opening day against Swindon. I said on the other thread I don’t know much about them, but I’m hopeful our momentum from last year see’s us through the opening day

Derby (A, League Cup) - Lose. Pumped their first team 4-0 a week or so ago, but of course only pre season so don’t read too much into it. Think that result will motivate them to put things right, and I can see us rotating a good number of starters and coming up short against Champ oppo.

Crewe (A) - Draw. I don’t know what to expect from us away from home this year so will play it safe and say draw. Crewe obviously a decent side, getting in the play offs last year so would take a point.

Man City U21s (H, Bristol Street Motors Trophy) - Win. Don’t really care though, as long as no injuries.

Salford (H) - Win. Will always back us at home as we have an excellent home record under Cook and took 60 points from possible 69 points last year which gives an indication as to how strong it is.

Gillingham (A) - Lose. Expect Gills to go well this season and be up there so can see this one being a tough one. As alluded to, away games are going to be much more difficult this year I think.

Total: 7 points from 12, wouldn’t be a bad start at all. Fingers crossed it’s even better though…

Salford (a) - Draw. No idea what team we'll name for it so take time to gel.

Barrow (a League Cup) - Lose. Expect will rotate the squad and we'll go back to standard Vale in this competition first round exit after last years run.

Tranmere (h) - Draw. Will be an expectant home crowd and that always ends in a damp squib where Vale are concerned. Also only one home win this calendar year so got that barrier to get over.

Barrow (a) - Win. Be a scrappy one but think we'll have enough attacking options to just get by them.

Doncaster (h) - Lose. One of the favourites and more advanced than we are in terms of a settled team.

*We do have Salford away in the Pizza Trophy also but frankly couldn’t care less about that.

Salford (A) - Draw, tricky game, in fairness even if we lose this 6-0 its progress on last seasons opener!

Barrow (A) - League Cup - No idea how serious they will take, nor Moore, have a feeling we will use this to get minutes into some of the injured lads which may go for or against us, could go either way - Draw - PENS is a Lottery

Tranmere (H) - Draw, always a tricky and tight encounter, big bouncing home crowd but think this will be similar to our last home meeting which was the first home game of the promotion season also.

Barrow (A) - if he features likely a hero's reception from the away end for Worrall, what a player and man (oddly when not playing he is usually at VP still watching us!), tight win

Salford - (A) - Pizza Cup, 2 trips to Salford and Barrow in 2 weeks! We always seem to lose to them in this so probably loss.

Doncaster (H) - We have had their number in the last few meetings and a big early test of where we are, entertaining. Draw.

Swindon (H) - DRAW - more on the fence as I know nothing about them, and first game of the season is always tricky

Derby (A, LC) - LOSE - probably are there for the taking based on PSF but imagine they will be much better organised this time.

Crewe (A) - WIN - assuming Crewe haven't changed much over the years and generally like a go, probably will play into our hands. Noted their home form is wobbly too.

Man City U21s (H, BSM Trophy) - DONT CARE

Salford (H) - WIN - had these down as a bottom third sort of team, so one we should be looking at win at home.

Gillingham (A) - LOSE - our record here is awful from what I remember, it's 12.30 KO, barely any away fans, not one that strikes me as being a particularly excitable fixture

History would say a draw but I’m going for a win.
Salford (A) (LC)
No idea probably a close defeat
Newport (A)
Got absolutely battered there last season, going for a close fought win
Morecambe (H)
They won’t be a settled side by the time we play them so hopefully another 3 points
Port Vale (A)
Big Daz: he won’t get anything but abuse from those in attendance, early KO expecting a defeat.

I’d be more than happy with 9 points

Tranmere (A) - as mentioned in the other thread it's squad availability that concerns me here. Draw

Shrewsbury (A) EFL Cup - they didn't look great in the FA cup last season (we'd have won if not for three of our trademark defensive howlers) and I don't think they have improved much based on what I've heard. But it's an away game in a cup competition we might not prioritise. Loss

Fleetwood (H) - again don't know much about them, but I think we should be able to win a lot of home games this season and I don't see Fleetwood as being up there this season. Win

Grimsby (H) - usually would expect a good following but Thursday night on TV is probably not going to be that. I think we match up well against other teams who want to play it out. Win

Swindon (A) - not expected by anyone to be a great side either but now full of giants and I've been too positive for the home games. Loss

Would be happy with 7 points from 12, any less and I'm sure Maynard will be feeling the heat.

Carlisle (H) - Important to put down a marker at home against a side that I think will grow into the season. Win.
Swansea (A) EFL Cup - About as poor a draw as we could've had. Lose.
Morecambe (A) - Hopefully we'll be able to take advantage of a lack of team cohesion with their 57 new signings. Win.
Fleetwood (A) - The third of three really long distance away games in succession, I think Fleetwood will be ok this year. Lose.
Chesterfield (H) - Tricky one but I think a game we should look to win if we're to be successful this year. Win.

Feels far too confident to stay unbeaten in the league throughout August, but hey that's what il go for. Wouldn't suprise me if atleast one of the Draws ends in defeat.

Tranmere A. Lose
Shrewsbury A. LC. Lose
Fleetwood H. Win.
Grimsby H. Draw.
Swindon A. Lose.

We are short up front, have injuries to centre midfield and a manager who needs to make some serially good decisions to get the best out the team and hasn't really done it so far.
We were blowing after and hour against Peterborough, I'm not convinced we've managed pre season very well in terms of having the players fully fit to do 90 mins after a lot of substitutions after an hour in the earlier matches.
Based on one friendly I've high hopes for Jack Hinchy who although not fully match fit showed some real class against strong opposition.

I honestly don't know what to expect of us this season. We could finish rock bottom, we could win the league (well, maybe not), or we could win the Mid-Table Trophy. It really is a crap shoot given the turnover in the squad.

Anyway...

Newport (H) - Win
LC Plymouth (A) - Win
Grimsby (A) - Win
Wimbledon (H) - Win
Walsall (A) - Win

I won't hold my breath...

Fleetwood away - Know very little about them other than Adam got them playing a bit better towards the end of the season. We're often cagey and not that exciting on the opening day. Draw.
Bradford home (League Cup) - I'd rather win the league match later on in the month so I am graciously handing a plum second round tie away at Wigan or someone to our West Yorkshire pals. Lose.
Cheltenham home - Oh for God's sake, not this lot again. I feel like it was 2005/06 when we last did well against Cheltenham and even then they beat us in the playoff final. Draw.
Notts away - I really don't know which way Notts are gonna go this season, but I reckon our business over the summer (Davies signing pending) is looking slightly better than theirs, hoping for a tighter match than last season's visit to ML when we were second best. Draw.
Bradford home - This is the season we bury this ridiculous hoodoo and beat Bradord twice in the league. WIN.

6 points and unbeaten in the league, that'll most certainly do.

Tranmere A - Opening day notoriously difficult to predict but if, as expected, we have no Robertson and no Palmer, that midfield is a big worry. L
Shrewsbury A - Maynard hasn’t had a cup match yet so no idea if he’ll continue the Williams approach of actively trying to get knocked out. Don’t think we have the depth if we do make a load of changes. L
Fleetwood H - Don’t know a lot about them, but can take relegated teams a bit of time to sort themselves out. W
Grimsby H - Think we look a better team on paper so hopefully would have enough to get a win at home with a couple of players back by then as well. W
Swindon A - Harry Smith and Jeff King in one team? Meeting all our friends. D

I would be relatively content with seven points from four if we got our midfield back fit and a new forward in to go with it.

Always interested to see what attitude newly promoted fans take to that daft trophy so glad to see Chesterfield giving it the respect it deserves…

A club not a million miles from me got all giddy with it and won it in their first season back, to their eternal shame.

I have fond memories of winning it, and also getting to another final before it was ruined by all these PL kids teams in it. Not interested at all in fairness how we get on

GTFC 1-1 Bradford (9-8 on pens) League cup
Notts County 4-1 GTFC

GTFC 2-1 Bradford

So 6 points from our 4 league games and I’d say they were all the correct results, we deservedly beat Bradford and based on the first 60 mins I’d say we also deserved the win v Cheltenham even though until our late winner they looked the more likely.
And I’d say our 2 defeats were also probably about right, Fleetwood we should’ve been 2 up in 2 minutes but then did absolutely nothing for the rest of the game so 1-0 defeat no problem with that and despite the dodgy goals Notts scored the 3 goal winning scoreline for them was fair although probably should’ve been about 6-3.
And a win in the cup before getting hammered by Wednesday, fair enough.
Happy with that start given those tough looking fixtures.

I didn't predict, I never do. However it's been a good month. 3 wins and one loss in the league, beat Wycombe in the tinpot trophy and got through to the league cup 3rd round beating Ipswich on penalties to get there.

Pretty damn good.

Not a bad set of guesses I reckon. Arguably those were the results we deserved although Fleetwood was a weird one where a lot of our chances came after we were 2 down, and Shrewsbury was all over the place.

Not the hardest set of fixtures but definitely important for Maynard to start the season well, hopefully can push on from here.

Wasn't too far off with this. Didn't expect the performances to be quite as bad, but predicted 5 points and ended up with 4.
