Christmas fixture 1983 all over again, 5-0 to them, bolton doing the conga in the away end, some of us in the home end (well, it was 1983 hehehe)

Think first goal is key.

If Bolton score first, then it will be tough trying to break down a determined packed defence and I predict a 1-1 draw.
If we score first (which I expect) then we’ll win 2-0 or 2-1.

Prediction 2-1
Gary Madine will be booed every time he goes anywhere near the ball, that means he’s a cert to score.
Can just picture him cupping his ear and laughing at the Kop.
Attendance 26,874 (with 1,048 from Bolton).

I went to the Xmas fixtures in the 77-78 season.
Think we lost at home to Bolton 1-5, although I think you were near the top of division 2 at the time
And the next match we have a home game against Arsenal (3rd rd of the FA cup) and lost 0-5, think Malcom McDonald scored an hatrick.

Fleck back in the middle, bash back to centre half, ccv out the team, hopefully forever and Billy in for clayton is my guess. A good performance from us and a steady 2 nil win i reckon.

wow, genuinely stunned, Parky actually changed formation and played two up front, think we just had the first half, and after seeing the reply, looked like a penalty to make it 2-0. You guys had the second half, probably should have scored but we threw everything at that...Madines goal wasn't popular (but he is a complete arsehole to be fair)

Fair play deserved win from what I hear you lot been waiting long enough very strange league ain't it. Bolton, Sunderland and Brum all win today.

Sounds like you changed you're formation to match ours and won in every department, good management and the players obviously stepped up.

Thought the start (first 15 minutes) was key today.

Bolton seemed psyched up, showed physicality and big determination whilst we looked lethargic and possibly over confident.
Once the goal came (which I think was just about deserved) then Bolton gradually slipped in to survival mode, defending deep and scrapping for their lives, pressing and closing down well.

As expected Bolton tired in the 2nd half and couldn’t press as well, so we dominated possession and had long spells of attacking but struggled to break down a resolute Bolton defence. Think we only created 3 or 4 decent chances all match but we probably deserved at least a draw.

But credit to Bolton, they did a job on us, tried to turn it into a scrappy game, lots of fouls to either side and bits of time wasting but they showed enough battling qualities to suggest they have the character to survive the threat of relegation. Also thought Madine had a good game, long balls to his head and he seems to always jump with elbows out. Virtually guarantees that he draws a foul or commits a foul every time.

I thought the same.

Apart from praising Gary Madine our manager gave very little praise to Bolton. It sounded small minded going on about their poor style of play and how we were the only team pushing forward trying to win the game playing football “the right way”.

In many way I do agree with what Wilder said. We did have much more possession and shots and we played the better football using midfield with patient build up play.

But he omitted to say that Bolton are fighting for their lives.
They came out of the blocks quicker and made it really difficult.
We struggled to get into our fluid game because Bolton closed us down and won/ gave away free kicks breaking up play (it’s within the rules).

Bolton showed much better defensive and battling qualities than us. We did the usual trick of attacking finding great positions but struggling to create clear chances due to a poor final ball against a good Bolton defence.

Bolton play to their strengths and deserve credit for their long awaited away win. No complaints from me.

Agree with everything both of you had said. It is all about staying up, and even though I loathe the football we play, if it keeps us up this season then it'll do
